Sylvester Tryon 'Bus' Hartnett

Sylvester Tryon “Bus” Hartnett of Wichita, Kansas, passed away on March 21, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 86. He was born on December 30, 1936, to Bluford Andrew “B.A.” Sr., and Lucy Helen (Welch) Hartnett, in Mullinville, Kansas.

Bus graduated from Plainville High School. He was the quarterback of the Cardinal football team when they won the championship in 1953, and the Cardinals accomplished a 38-game winning streak in the early ’50s. Bus was also awarded the Leon Bair trophy as an outstanding senior player and sportsman.

Bus married Berneitta McCormack, July 5, 1956.

Bus graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. His career included hospitals, nursing homes, in-home, and private practice and spanned more than 40 years.

Bus enjoyed woodworking. He was a past member of the Woodworkers Guild. He also spent countless hours fixing, repairing, reclaiming, mowing, and other upkeep and projects connected to his and Berneitta’s homes and properties.

Bus passed his athletic ability and love of sports to his daughters. The girls were all good athletes. Bus did some coaching.

Bus is survived by: his wife, Berneitta of Wichita; three daughters, Jennifer Lynne Hartnett-Henderson (Paul), Mountain View, California, Lisa Kaye Warren (Paul), Valley Center, Kansas, Barbara Diane Rands (Brett), Oak Ridge, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Gayla Hartnett, Bakersfield, CA; two grandsons, Cameron Richard Rands, and Morgan Reese Rands.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bluford Andrew, Sr., and Lucy Helen (Welch) Hartnett, brothers, Bluford Andrew Hartnett, Jr, Donald “Doc” Hartnett, and sister, Donna Mae (Hartnett) Prickett.

The service will be held at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Plainville, Kansas, April 10, 2023, at 2:00 pm. A private family graveside will be held at the Plainville Cemetery immediately following.
