James L. Ohlsen, 92, longtime resident of Norton and businessman, passed away January 10, 2023, at his home after a short time illness.
James “Jim” was born December 21, 1930, in Whiting, KS the son of Fred and Ruby (Richelsen) Ohlsen. He grew up there and graduated from Whiting High School in 1950.
Jim farmed with his dad and brother Bill. He also helped his Dad in the grocery store that his Dad owned.
After selling the farm and grocery store, the family moved to Seneca, KS where they built and managed Ohlsen’s Frontier Station and Café. In 1963, Jim and Bill moved to Norton where their Dad helped them build another Ohlsen’s Frontier Station and Café.
On February 7, 1965, Jim married the love of his life, Reges Lorance. They were married 57 years.
In 1967, Bill and family moved back to Seneca. Jim and Reges took over and managed the business until January of 1978 when they sold out.
Jim and family moved to Anoka, MN and in 1981 they moved back to Norton. Jim worked for KDOT. Upon retiring, Jim enjoyed working at home, having time with family, and repairing guns.
Jim was a member of the former Full Gospel Church in Norton.
Survivors are his wife, Reges of Norton; daughter Vicki of Rossville, KS; 2 sons Francis of Evansville, WY and Kirk of Woodston, KS; grandson Toby Ohlsen; great grandson Bentley Ohlsen; and one great granddaughter Peyton Ohlsen; along with brother-in-law Barry Lorance of Shallow Water, TX; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Bill; brother Francis, who was lost in the line of duty with the Coast Guard in 1943; and sister Louise Bothe.
Cremation was planned. A private family service will be held at a later date. Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, is in charge of arrangements.
