Steven Ray Wornkey, Sr., 76, passed away July 9, 2024, at his home in Great Bend. He was born on June 26, 1948, in Great Bend, to Roy D. and Maxine (Kilgore) Wornkey. On Sept. 5, 1975, he married Rebecca Sue “Becky” Sander in Great Bend. She passed on Nov. 18, 2019.
A lifetime area resident, Steven worked as a gas service technician for Midwest Energy for 18 years prior to his retirement. He was a graduate of Ellinwood High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Steven enjoyed fishing, playing slot machines, and was a golf enthusiast, belonging to Grove Park Golf Club. He was a caring father, loving brother, and adored his grandchildren.
Survivors include four sons, Shawn Wornkey and spouse Mitch of Hollywood, Fla., Steven Wornkey, Jr., Alan L. Wornkey and spouse Sheri, and Chad Wornkey, all of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Blake and Dylan Wondra, and Heaven and Nicholas Wornkey; one great-grandchild, River Wornkey; three brothers, Jerry Wornkey of Scottsbluff, Neb., Tom Wornkey and wife Chris, and Tim Wornkey and wife Pam, all of Ellinwood; sister, Pam Nowak of Holcomb; and numerous loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Becky; son, Darren Wornkey; parents; and two brothers, Jim and Don Wornkey.
Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2024, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Joel East presiding. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, with military honors presented by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Memorials have been designated to the Steven Wornkey, Sr. Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS 67530.
