Joanne Marie Barton, 84, Hays, died Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Via Christi Village surrounded by family.
She was born January 1, 1938, in Hays, the daughter of George and Angela (Staab) Koerner. On July 13, 1957, she was united in marriage to Jerry M. Barton in Russell and they celebrated over 47 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on November 9, 2004. Joanne was a homemaker raising her family in Dorrance for many years and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dorrance. After moving to Hays, she attended mass at numerous churches often accompanied by her sister Janet. She loved to read, enjoyed cooking and baking, her brownies with walnuts being a family favorite. She was a K-State fan, enjoyed garage sales, loved chocolate and attending all of her children’s sporting events. Joanne was a great mom and as much as her children and grandchildren loved her, she loved them more.
Survivors include two sons: Theron Barton and wife Vicki of Shawnee, Jerry Barton and girlfriend Debbie Fabian of Russell, two daughters: JoLana Schumacher and husband Bruce of Lakewood, CO and Melody Giebler and husband Mike of Littleton, CO, three brothers: Jim Koerner and wife Arlis, Danny Koerner and significant other Diane, and Robert “Rocky” Koerner and wife Janet, all of Hays, four sisters: Carol Hustead of Hays, Judy Dreher and husband Don of Hays, Marlene Dyke and husband Bob of Miami, OK, and Linda Hammerschmidt and husband George of Victoria, two brothers-in-law: Ron Hamel of Plainville and Rodney Barton and wife Vera of Long Beach, CA, a sister-in-law: Jean Koerner of Hays, eight grandchildren: Christopher Giebler and fiancé Angelica, Lindsay Giebler and husband JT Mengel, Jodi and Jordan Elam, and Peyton, Presley, Muunjiza and Tavia Barton, two great grandchildren: Castiel and Catalina Giebler, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry, three brothers: Arlen, Kenny, and Melvin Koerner, three sisters: Mary Lou Hamel, Rosalyn “Rosie” Koerner, and Janet Batman, and a brother-in-law: Roy Hustead.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Munjor with Fr. Damian Richards officiating. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:00 am until 9:40 on Tuesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 6:30 pm on Monday at the funeral home.
