Marian Alice Youmans, 97, formerly of Hays, died April 29, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born March 18, 1925, in Kansas City, KS, to William and Adalia (Winters) Schoenfeld.
Marian graduated from Wyandotte High School, Baker University, Bethany Hospital nursing program and completed her Master’s Degree in Nursing from Wichita State University. She worked as a registered nurse for over 44 years. Marian’s passion was helping her patients and mentoring nursing students. Marian worked for Hadley Hospital, Hays, before joining the faculty at Fort Hays State University as a nursing instructor. She eventually served as Acting Dean for the School of Nursing a year before she retired in 1990. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the hospital.
Marian loved gardening, cats, and traveling, especially to the Grand Canyon, where she, husband Ray, and family, rode the mules to the bottom. Marian was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, Kansas Nurses Association, and American Nurses Association. She attended First Church of the Nazarene, Hutchinson, and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hays, where she was active in the United Methodist Women. In 1964, Marian and her family spent a year in Liberia, West Africa, serving with the United Methodist Board of Missions. In her retirement, she and Ray enjoyed traveling extensively by rail and attended educational programs through the Elder Hostel program.
On December 16, 1951, she married Raymond E. “Ray” Youmans, in Kansas City, KS. He died January 17, 2018, after sharing 66 years of marriage.
Marian is survived by: children, Barbara Youmans of Hutchinson, and William Raymond Youmans (Joan) of Centennial, CO; granddaughter, Kylie Youmans Lahey (Adam) of Austin, TX; brother-in-law, Ron Youmans and niece, Jane Foerster (John, deceased), both of Milwaukee, WI; and beloved cat, KoKo. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews from Ray's side of the family.
She was preceded in death by: her parents and twin-sister, Mildred Adalia Youmans. Marian and Mildred were both “Youmans” because the twins married brothers.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
