Norinne Sylvia Petersen, 89, of Hays, Kansas, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Hays Good Samaritan Society.
She was born September 8, 1933, in Lake County, South Dakota, to Fred and Esther (Strom) Sales. Her family moved to Wentworth, South Dakota, before settling in Sibley, Iowa to raise their children.
In her youth, Norinne occupied her time doing cheerleading and spending time with her friends and family. She was honored to be crowned homecoming queen in high school. She graduated from Sibley High School in 1951 and went to work for the Merrick Printing Company in Sibley.
Norinne married Donald L. Petersen on July 5, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sibley, Iowa. They were blessed to spend over 57 years by each other’s side. Many of these years together were in Hoxie, Kansas.
Norinne enjoyed being a wife and a mother and also found time to be a Den mother, PTA officer, LWML member and officer and Sunday school teacher in addition to helping out neighbors. After her children were in school, she was employed by the U.S. government working first for Selective Service and then for the Social Security Administration, a career she found rewarding for over 30 years.
In retirement, she and her husband moved to Hays, where she continued serving as a Sunday school teacher, LWML member and many other roles in her membership at Messiah Lutheran Church. She also found time to continue her hobbies of doll collecting, crafting and spending time with family. She found joy in sharing many of her talents with her grandchildren who have fond memories of taking trips, visiting historical sites, playing dress-up, writing plays, and having tea parties.
Survivors include a son, Donald Petersen, of Bedford, Texas, a daughter, JaNell Lopez and her husband, Greg, of Overland Park, Kansas, eight grandchildren, Craig Petersen, Brad Petersen, Christy (Patrick) Catuncan, Lindsay Torres, Danielle (DJ) Hall, Ashley (Tom) Anguiano, Allie Lopez and Gracie Lopez, 14 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Velma Kindred of Boise, Idaho, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald, brothers John (Joyce) Sales and Fred (Marilyn) Sales, daughter-in-law Mary Petersen, and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2023 at Messiah Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery in Madison, South Dakota.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church – Sunday School or Hays Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home.
