Pride of the Prairie Orchestra will be the final program of the Western Plains Arts Association’s 54th season. The regional orchestra will feature “The Music of May” for their spring concert. The concert begins at 3 p.m. CDT, Sunday, May 5 at the Colby Community College’s Cultural Arts Center - Frahm Theater.

Admission at the door is $10 adults or $5 students, or by either WPAA or Pride of the Prairie Orchestra (POP) season tickets. Funding for this program is made possible by business, private and foundation support throughout the area including generous grants from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation and the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation – Dane Hansen Community Grant for Thomas County.

The Pride of the Prairie Orchestra was organized as The Colby Community Orchestra in 1979 by Bill Beck, a retired school music director. The name was changed to The Pride of the Prairie Orchestra in 1998 to better reflect the widespread membership of the group. The orchestra presently has members from throughout the area. Andrew Salvador is the present POP Conductor.

The orchestra is composed of volunteer musicians, ranging from school age to retired individuals. Nearly every Monday evening from September through early May, musicians gather to rehearse in Colby. At least three concerts are performed each year, according to member Janet Hopson.

Since area schools do not offer an orchestra program, this has met a need for students and adults who play a stringed instrument.

Western Plains Arts Association plans final season program

Ellis County’s observance of the National Day of Prayer will be Thursday, May 2, inside the ballroom at the VFW, 2106 Vine in Hays.

The local observance will take place from noon to 1 p.m. The purpose of the event is to encourage Americans to “come together as a nation to pray for our nation.”

This year’s theme, based on 2 Samuel 22:29-31, is “Lift up the Word. Light up the world.”

The annual event is sponsored by the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance.

Cheryl Glassman of Antonino and Terri Braun of Hays, for the third year in a row, are organizing the event.

Glassman said the decision to move the observance indoors last year proved popular with those in attendance. Because extra chairs had to be brought in to accommodate the crowd of about 150, the decision was made to move the event to the larger ballroom at the VFW this year.

Glassman said she believes the observance is very important because “our country is struggling to see the good, positive things around our nation, states and cities. It is a blessing to have had national leaders who, for many years--and presently-- endorse National Day of Prayer.

“Gathering together, we become one voice, lifting our prayers to God for this beautiful county and the people who make it so. We must work together as we join people throughout the nation in prayer on this special day.”&nbsp;

As in previous years, various members of the community will be offering prayers in specific categories.

As of press time, the&nbsp;Rev. Ben Houchen and Perry Harrison will be praying for the government; U.S. Army Col. Allen Schmidt and U.S. Air Force Capt. John&nbsp;R.&nbsp;Braun will be praying for the military; Cristina Janney and Dawn Carter will be praying for the media; Dr.&nbsp;Andrea&nbsp;M.&nbsp;Stephens and Patty Stull will be praying for business; Brooke Leiker and Ally Crotinger will be praying for education; the Rev. Christine Wagner and the Rev. Troy Miller will be praying for the church;&nbsp;the&nbsp;Rev. Brenda Rodger and Jace and Kynzie&nbsp;Leiker will be praying for the family; and Rick&nbsp;Rajewski,&nbsp;MD, and Jerod&nbsp;M.&nbsp;Grove,&nbsp;MD, will be praying for caregivers.

Returning as emcee will be Patrick McGinnis, owner of Breathe Coffee House. Music will be provided by students from TMP-Marian High School. The Rev. Cana Moore, pastor at Hays Christian Church, will give the benediction.

The National Day of Prayer has a long history. In 1775, in the midst of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress issued a proclamation setting aside a day of prayer.&nbsp;In 1952, Congress passed an act establishing an annual day of prayer, which was signed into law by President Harry Truman.&nbsp;In 1988, Congress amended that law and designated the annual observance as the first Thursday in May.

BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;Doctors on Call, a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature the&nbsp;High Plains Mental Health Center in Hays.&nbsp; This episode will air at 7 p.m.&nbsp;Tuesday, April 30&nbsp;and will focus on substance use disorder treatment.

Doctors on Call&nbsp;is a program that provides medical information on a variety of different topics. Medical professionals from throughout the state travel to Bunker Hill to provide information and answer questions from the viewing audience. The doctors presenting each week have expertise in the topic chosen for that program.&nbsp; Questions can be called in during the show or emailed prior to the broadcast.&nbsp;

Seventh in downtown Hays. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. The program is made possible by Humanities Kansas.

You can’t mention 20th-century women’s wear without thinking of Nelly Don. The Parsons native built a fashion empire on the vision that women deserved affordable, stylish clothing regardless of means or status. From humble beginnings, Don built a company that treated her workforce of women fairly, brought fashion to millions of American women, and became the largest dressmaker of the century. Ellen “Nell” Quinlan Donnelly’s story is one of innovation, triumph, and hard work—all rooted in her small-town Kansas upbringing.

Marla Day is the curator of Kansas State University’s Historic Costume and Textile Museum in Manhattan.

Beginning Monday at 8 a.m., Canal Blvd. in Hays will be closed to through traffic at 29th St. on the northwest side of the canal for pavement repairs. 

Repairs should be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 5.

Kansas Department of Transportation

The Kansas Department of Transportation began work on a resurfacing project on a portion of K-25 in Logan County on Thursday.

Project work will involve milling and overlaying on 22 miles between 160th&nbsp;Road and the U.S. 40 junction. Traffic through the areas where crews are actively working will be directed by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should plan for delays of 15 minutes or less during daylight hours.

KDOT expects work to be completed in late June, conditions permitting.

Join the Imagine Ellis County: Downtown Amphitheater Taskforce meeting to perform a "Strategic Doing" to discuss the proposed project from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hays Public Library.

The Downtown&nbsp;Amphitheater&nbsp;has been proposed as a permanent structure in Municipal Park to host events such as Wild West Fest, Octoberfest, graduations and outdoor symphonies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tennis and pickleball courts also will be discussed. The meeting is open to the public.

Wednesday's Cash Grab winner is....

This year’s Hays Public Library Summer Reading Challenge theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library! Taking that theme to heart, the library will have weeks focused on adventurous subjects such as pirates, nature, dragons, and oceans. The challenge will run from May 20th&nbsp;to July 31st.

The library will use the online program Beanstack to track summer reading for children and teens. Through Beanstack, families register participants and use the program to log their reading progress. Staff will assist with sign-up and logging for those without computer access. Challenges have been created for each age group, early literacy, elementary, and young adult.

For children and teens, the Summer Reading Challenge is an exciting way to improve literacy during the summer months.&nbsp;Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during&nbsp;summer&nbsp;vacation, actually slip in reading ability by the time school begins in the fall.

Registration is required and begins May 1st, online or in person. Each child who registers receives a gift. A prize will be given to each child who completes their challenge by the end of the event on July 31st. Those who complete the challenge also will put their name in a drawing for the grand prize of their choice. The ending party, open to everyone, will be held at the Hays Aquatic Park on Aug. 2.

Adults participate in the Summer Challenge by completing activities on a bookmark that can be picked up at the library, beginning May 20th. They will receive a tote bag when they sign up. There will be 10 activities. Adults will have until July 31st&nbsp;to complete all the activities and submit an entry into the end of the summer adult prize drawing.&nbsp;

A day of activities will kick off the Challenge on May 20. Along with crafts and snacks, the day will include performances by Jammin’ Randy at 10 a.m., Jetpack Jason at 1 p.m., and an interactive movie at 3 p.m.

SubmittedThis year’s Hays Public Library Summer Reading Challenge theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library! Taking that theme to heart, the library will have weeks focused on adventurous subjects such as pirates, nature, dragons, and oceans. The challenge will run from May 20th&nbsp;to July 31st.The library will use the online program Beanstack to track summer reading for children and teens. Through Beanstack, families register participants and use the program to log their reading progress. Staff will assist with sign-up and logging for those without computer access. Challenges have been created for each age group, early literacy, elementary, and young adult.For children and teens, the Summer Reading Challenge is an exciting way to improve literacy during the summer months.&nbsp;Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during&nbsp;summer&nbsp;vacation, actually slip in reading ability by the time school begins in the fall.Registration is required and begins May 1st, online or in person. Each child who registers receives a gift. A prize will be given to each child who completes their challenge by the end of the event on July 31st. Those who complete the challenge also will put their name in a drawing for the grand prize of their choice. The ending party, open to everyone, will be held at the Hays Aquatic Park on Aug. 2.Adults participate in the Summer Challenge by completing activities on a bookmark that can be picked up at the library, beginning May 20th. They will receive a tote bag when they sign up. There will be 10 activities. Adults will have until July 31st&nbsp;to complete all the activities and submit an entry into the end of the summer adult prize drawing.&nbsp;A day of activities will kick off the Challenge on May 20. Hays' 2024 waterline project starts Wednesday

On Monday, crews began placing new pavement markings on 41st Street, between Hall Street and the Highway 183 Bypass in Hays.

 This project also includes painting crosswalks and the turn lanes to the north and east at the intersection of 41st and Hall. 

It is anticipated that the work will be completed by the end of the day on Friday. 

The traveling public should use caution and, if possible, avoid this area.

Resolution 2017-4, the Ellis County Fire Department is announcing the
implementation of a temporary burn ban in all the unincorporated areas of Ellis
County effective Monday, April 22. 

While in a burn ban, this limits the open
burning of garden/yard debris, pastures, ditches or other materials. However, normal household
trash can still be burnt in a barrel with a protected screened cover.

The burn ban is being implemented due to the increasing temperatures, lower levels of humidity, and a long spell without significant
measurable moisture throughout the entire county.

It is hopeful a significant amount of moisture
will blanket Ellis County in the coming weeks. If so, an
announcement will be made when the ban is lifted.

As always,
if anyone ever questions if a fire is about
to become out of control,
or may see a potential fire,
please call 911 immediately to get emergency personnel to respond as quickly as
possible.

their professional development. 

The Child Care Provider
Professional Development Series: Enhancing Outdoor Learning Environments is
scheduled at 6 p.m., April 25 at The Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering, 2350
E. 8th St.

Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO
of The Chamber in Hays, said The Chamber is proud to offer professional
development for area child care providers.

"We are committed to
supporting the growth and development of child care providers in our community,”
Wasinger said. “This series offers valuable training and resources to enhance
the quality of care for our children."

Brenda Holopirek, a professional
development trainer and regional community consultant with Child Care Aware of
Kansas, is set to bring a wealth of experience and expertise to event, having
served in various roles within the early childhood education field for over
three decades. 

Attendees will have the
opportunity to learn about designing cost-effective outdoor learning
environments and receive two hours of KDHE health and safety-approved training.

In addition to the training
session, the event will offer free fingerprinting services from 5:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m. Preference will be given to child care providers and their spouses
whose fingerprints expire within 45 - 60 days of each event. 

Fingerprinting services will also
be available during the remaining Child Care Task Force of Ellis County evening
meetings and the November 14 professional development event.

"We understand the
importance of providing a safe and nurturing environment for our children, and
offering fingerprinting services is just one way we support our child care
providers in maintaining high standards of care," Wasinger said.

Attendees can register for the
event at a cost of $5 per person. RSVPs are requested by noon Tuesday to
ensure an adequate supply of materials and handouts for all participants.

On Saturday April 27, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This event allows for the public to anonymously dispose of old, unused, unwanted, or no longer needed medications. Theevent will be held in the north parking lot of the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center, 105 W. 12th St, in Hays.

The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting. 

Items that will be accepted are tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. 

Prescription medications can be disposed of in the original container or placed in a Ziploc bag. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage. 

Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

Old Iron is back after a 15-year break! As part of the 150th Anniversary of Rush County, Kansas, the people of Otis have resurrected Old Iron Days for a one-time encore celebration. The celebration will be held on April 26-28, 2024 in downtown Otis.

Events begin on Friday the 26th at 6 pm with a Pancake Feed sponsored by the Otis Lions Club under the People’s Bank tent in the Otis City Park. Live music will be provided by “Off Duty.” A free will offering will be taken.

On Saturday morning, events kick off with a car and antique tractor show from 10 am - 2 pm. Military vehicles will also be on display. There will be live blacksmithing demonstrations, and the Mountain Man Rendezvous will feature historical reenactments from the early 1800s. Food and craft vendors, games for the kids, and more will be set up downtown. The Rush County Historical Society will exhibit historical displays in the Senior Center from 10 am - 2 pm and after the parade. Balloons from the Messer Helium Plant will be available for the kids from 10 am – 12:00 pm.

At 2:30 pm, the parade kicks off on Main Street featuring tractors, cars, and floats from the late 1800s to the present. On Sunday, April 28, the celebration will conclude with a community worship service under the People’s Bank tent at 10:30 am. Everyone is welcome.

The Otis Old Iron Days celebration was founded in 1987 as a vision of Jim Funk, Harry Schneider, Ory Petersilie, and&nbsp;Jenny Landers, of Otis. Their idea was to give antique farm equipment collectors a chance to showcase and celebrate these historic artifacts of the past while providing a day of fun and entertainment. The last Old Iron Days celebration was held in April 2011. Old Iron Days 2024 is sponsored by the Otis Lions Club.

Throughout 2024, Rush County is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a year-long celebration,&nbsp;The 150-Year Rush. On December 5, 1874, Kansas Governor Thomas Osborn signed a proclamation formally establishing Rush County, Kansas. To commemorate, special sesquicentennial events are being held each month throughout the county. All events are open to the public.
