Smith Center physician to be featured on SHPBS 'Doctors on Call' 

The Flying Bison Disc Golf Course, Hays Frontier Park, turned 40 years old last September.

At 4 p.m. April 2, the Chamber in Hays will host a ribbon cutting ceremony in the Frontier Park west shelter house with refreshments and a disc golf clinic.

The Flying Bison Disc Golf Club, Defiance Brewing Company and the city of Hays are also celebrating with a very unique beer festival. 

At 2 p.m. April 13, twelve Kansas brewery teams will tee off for the “Brewers Cup” in Frontier Park. Check-in for the event is from noon-1:30 p.m. Three exhibition cards will also be featured.

Tickets are being sold for the public to attend the beer festival and watch the competition. There will be four beer sampling stations located on the course.

Around 30 different craft beers will be available to sample. General Admission tickets are $45 and can be purchased at the website <a href="https://www.discgolfscene.com/">www.discgolfscene.com</a>.

The course, located in Frontier Park, is the oldest 18-hole course in the state of Kansas. It is also host to the longest running Professional Disc Golf Association sanctioned event in the state. All proceeds will be split to benefit the Kansas Disc&nbsp;Golf Association's annual Food Drive Event Discs and the Kansas Craft Brewers Guild. The KDGA raised $31,733 and 2,722 non-perishable items for food banks across the state last season.

Hays' Flying Bison Disc Golf Course celebrates 40-year milestone

The Kiwanis Club of Hays is eagerly anticipating its 50th annual Easter Egg Hunt, which will be held on March 30 at 9 a.m.

This year’s hunt will again be held on the Fort Hays State University campus on the quad, and attendees are encouraged to meet in front of the Memorial Union. 

To honor the 50th celebration, the club is planning an extra special event. Approximately 8,000 eggs will be stuffed and placed across the campus this year.

Age groups for the hunt will again be provided this year for children ages birth to ten. Families are asked to meet at the quad, and Kiwanis Club of Hays members will lead attendees to the appropriate age bracket locations for their own special hunt. 

The Easter Bunny will also be on site to take pictures with guests.

Kiwanis Club of Hays wishes to thank its community partners for their financial contributions to this year’s Easter egg hunt:

· Hays McDonald’s locations for providing ice cream coupons

· Walmart SuperCenter for contributing a $100 gift certificate to purchase candy

Two project updates will be presented to the Hays city commission during their meeting Thursday afternoon.&nbsp;

Improvements to 13th Street near the new high school's construction site will be reviewed along with the latest work and regulatory updates for the R9 waterline project.&nbsp;

The commission will also vote on a resolution to start the process of establishing a reinvestment housing incentive district through the state for the planned retiree-focused housing development, The Grove, north of Hays Medical Center. &nbsp;

The Wings of Life World Run is a run/walk held in numerous places around the world on May 5, with each location starting at the same time — 11 a.m. and coordinated universal time (UTC).&nbsp;

In Hays, that means a 6 a.m. start for the Wings for Life World Run at the Bickle/Schmidt Sports Complex.&nbsp;

All entry fees go to <a href="https://www.wingsforlife.com/us/spinal-cord-injury">spinal cord research</a>, said Darren Unrein, operations director at A&amp;A Coors, Hays. The cost to enter is $28 per person.&nbsp;

A&amp;A Coors is the area distributor of Red Bull energy drinks, which is the sponsor of the international event.&nbsp;

"Professional athletes, fun runners, beginners, are all in it together against the virtual catcher car," Unrein said.&nbsp;

The catcher car is on the downloadable registration app available on the&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com/en/locations">Wings for Life World Run website</a>, or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556730620944">Facebook page</a>. The virtual car begins moving 30 minutes after the start of the race and "once it overtakes you, you're done," he said. "There's no finish line."

"You walk or run, set your own distance and pace," Unrein said. "You can set anywhere from one mile up to 50 miles, if you're that ambitious. 

"You're not racing against other people. You're racing against the catcher car and your own goal. That's what makes this race different than most."

The Wings for Life World Run is now the largest running event in the world, according to information on its website. People in 195 countries have participated in the past decade, raising the equivalent of more than $47 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first 200 runners/walkers/wheelers to sign up will get a Red Bull lanyard. Prizes of a Red Bull backpack and a metal water bottle will be awarded to the top 10 distance runners. A special prize will be given for first place.

A light post-race breakfast will be served with water and Red Bull available to all participants and supporters.

The nonprofit Wings for Life World Run, now in its 10th year, has funded almost 300 spinal cord injury research projects in 20 countries.&nbsp;

&nbsp;According to the World Health Organization, between 250,000 and 500,000 people suffer a traumatic spinal cord injury every year. 

In the United States, more than 50% of those injuries are the result of traffic accidents, while 24% of spinal cord injuries are from falls.&nbsp;

"They become paralyzed with no feeling in their legs, maybe no feeling in their arms or hands either," Unrein said.

"As a charity foundation, Wings for Life supports cutting edge research worldwide. The big goal is to find a cure for spinal cord injury," he said.

He grew up speaking the Volga German dialect but learned to speak High German and was a high school German teacher until he retired and went to seminary. Even though the Volga Germans who came to this area did not speak High German, the worship services were held in High German because their hymnals, catechisms and Bibles were written in High German. Once again, the Victoria community is invited to a forum to provide insights and opinions about Phase 2 of St. John’s Place.&nbsp; The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the VFW. Refreshments and door prizes will be part of the event. &nbsp;

Sponsored by the Victoria Community Coalition, the meeting will be facilitated by Betty Johnson of the Dane Hansen Foundation. Groundbreaking for Phase 1 is set for Sunday, April 2.

The Coalition hopes to gain input about future building uses, including a child care, a senior center and a library. The coalition hopes for representation from the Victoria Recreation Commission, the Herzogfest Committee, the Victoria Alumni Association, the USD 432 School Board, Victoria City Council, civics classes and Grow Hays.

The meeting will open with an update on Phase 1, which will include photos of the demolition and design plans.&nbsp;

Coalition President Jeff Pfeifer said some of the hoped-for outcomes will be the formation of task forces/committees and a time for city-wide communication and involvement.

It will also be a time to celebrate community successes, including the new Dollar General store, tree projects and senior high school civics projects that will leave their marks on the community.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Hays High Plains Barbershop Chapter AO22 is looking forward to its 56th anniversary show "We Believe in Music" to be presented April 6 in the Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center at Fort Hays State University.

There will be two shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.&nbsp;

Show chairman this year is Roger Day and our chapter coach, Dr. Terry Brull, director of choral activities at Fort Hays State, will emcee the event.

Joining the Hays High Plains Chorus on stage will be the Tumbleweed Chorus from Colby and local chapter quartets.&nbsp;

The headlining quartet will be "After Hours," an American barbershop quartet that won the 2018 Barbershop Harmony Society International Quartet Championship held in Orlando, Florida, with an overall score of 94.7 percent. They are the highest scoring quartet to win since the change in scoring in 1993. "After Hours" has performed for a variety of barbershop shows all across the United States and strives to simply bring joy to all types of audiences through their music.

The success of this annual show helps provide dollars to various schools, singing groups, and other organizations that help people with special needs, such as Hays-based Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas. Our chapter is thankful for the community support.

Natoma Lions Club&nbsp;continues to serve&nbsp;with a myriad of projects throughout the year with emphasis on giving sight to the blind around the world, diabetes awareness, disaster relief, and other projects Nationally and locally. Following the tragic death of Wanda Prowse, a Natoma-Paradise-Waldo USD 399 employee, the club members decided to donate proceeds from their annual pancake supper to the Prowse family.&nbsp;&nbsp;American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109 members volunteered to help the Lions members in the Saturday evening project, March 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;Additional volunteers came alongside.

The Natoma community’s acts of kindness in generous donations raised $3,029 for Dan and Colton Prowse during the Natoma Lions Club’s March pancake supper. Local businesses donated $400 to help with the event. Volunteers “flipping” pancakes included Natoma Mayor Rick Dunlap, Lion David Kertz, and Dale Eickhoff, Natoma City Council. The hometown organizations give credence to the Heartland’s heritage of serving others, and the International Lions Club motto: We Serve. Natoma Lions Club Pancake Supper gives credence to the Heartland’s generosity

Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, March 18, the east leg of 41st and Hall St. intersection will be closed to through traffic for pavement repairs.

BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;The Kansas Legislature, a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature State Senator John Doll (Dist. #39 – Garden City) and State&nbsp;Representative Clarke Sanders&nbsp;(Dist. # 69 – Salina) on&nbsp;Friday, March 15 at 7 PM.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Legislature&nbsp;is a program that takes place during the legislative session and gives the legislators and viewers the opportunity to discuss up-to-date issues.&nbsp; During the program, viewers can call 1-800-337-4788 with their legislative questions.&nbsp;

Becky Kiser, News Reporter for Hays Post/Eagle Radio, has been named the moderator for the 2024 season of&nbsp;The Kansas Legislature.&nbsp; She will be joined by two or three legislators during each show.

LOGAN - Need a place to stash your red or white? The Hansen Museum will host a Basket Weaving class with Instructor Marsha Jensen of Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday, April 20th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hansen Museum Community Room, 110 W. Main, Logan, KS 67646.

In this workshop you will weave a basket with a divider that holds 2 bottles of wine. This basket uses a D handle that becomes part of the basket structure. There will be dyed reed available in a variety of colors for those who wish to include a color accent. A natural black walnut dip will be available as a finishing touch for your basket at the end of the class.

The cost to attend is $85 with discounts available for Patron &amp; Sustaining Museum Members. Registrations are non-refundable. Call the Museum to register or find the registration form on our website (hansenmuseum.org) under Classes &amp; Workshops. Honoring the late co-founder of the Deines Cultural Center’s monthly jam session, a special “Pickin’ at the Deines” event is being held this month on March 17th. The 3rd Annual Ronn Raymer Memorial Jam will begin at 3 pm on Sunday, March 17th at the Center at 820 N. Main in Russell with the traditional pot luck supper served at 5 pm followed by more music. Participants are encouraged to bring their acoustic instrument(s), their voice, a listening ear, and a food dish to share.

Beginning with the Frances Giebler Fiddle Fest in 2003, Raymer and Bob Roe of Russell, JF Stover of Hill City, and Nancy Selbe, former director of the DCC began the sessions as a meeting and sharing of regional musicians. Sessions have been attended by professional and amateur musicians from Colorado, Kansas City, Hill City, Great Bend, Osborne, Plainville, Jetmore, Garden City, Sterling, Hays, Memphis and more.

Raymer was a consistent participant, leader and promoter of the jam sessions providing vocals and playing guitar, auto-harp, washboard and ukulele. His presence will be included at the memorial session with videos shared by his family and family members will be attending.

The Women Who Lead of Ellis County is offering four $1,000 scholarships for the 2024-25 school year.

Ellis County women who will be attending full-time at Fort Hays State University, NCK Tech or the Hays Academy of Hair Design are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

Applicants can be first-time or returning students.
