Beginning on Wednesday at 7 a.m., the Main Street Bridge in Hays will be closed for repairs. 

These repairs are anticipated to be finished and the bridge opened by 5 p.m. Friday, April 12.

Main Street Bridge in downtown Hays to close for repairs mid-week

Two public hearings will be Wednesday during the Hays Area Board of Zoning Appeals meeting.

The board will consider approving the variance request by Michael Kline for a west side yard setback reduction for installation of a carport at 315 E. 23rd St.

A second public hearing will be a request by&nbsp;Lance Gerstner to approve the variance of an east street side yard setback reduction for installation of a covered patio at 1407 Motz Ave.

Hays Area Board of Zoning Appeals hearings set Wednesday

This program is made possible with numerous area sponsors including generous grants from the Logan County Community Foundation through the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

Derik is a singer, songwriter, producer and educator from Olympia, Wash. He writes, records and produces his own music as a self-taught multi-instrumentalists and audio engineer. He has garnered over 4 million views on YouTube, performed throughout the country and regularly contucts educational music workshops. Derik appeared regularly as lead guitarist on televison’s “Glee. His original songs can be heard on several programs, and his singing voice has been featured on ABC’s “Modern Family,” FOX’s “Raising Hope” and “New Girl,” CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother,” and NBC’s “Go On” and “The Voice,” and more.

Derik holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Industry from the University of Southern California, where he helped to shape the curriculum that has now become the Popular Music Degree program—a program that only 3% of applying singer-songwriters are accepted into—which honored Derik with a department award recognizing his contributions.

Other awards Derik has received include the Brian Wilson Music Scholarship for songwriting, the award for Best Male Artist in the 12th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards, and first place in the Indie International Songwriting Competition for his original song, “The Way It’s Gonna Go.”

Derik was invited by the USC President’s Office to write the music and lyrics for the USC Graduating Class of 2011’s commencement anthem. His song, “Take Chances,” was featured at commencement, and was the catalyst for his first independent tour across 40 locations on the West Coast to raise money for high school arts &amp; music programs. WPAA plans April 21 event

Several K-State Research &amp; Extension Districts will be offering a Hazardous Occupation Safety Training in Agriculture or Tractor and Farm Safety Course for youth on Saturday, April 27th from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be held at Hoxie Implement, 933 Oak Ave. Hoxie, Kansas.

K-State Research &amp; Extension Agents will teach this course covering farm and machinery safety, including proper tractor operation and maintenance, grain safety, implement use safety, livestock safety and more. The United States Department of Labor requires youth 14 – 15 years of age attend this safety training in order to work on a farm for someone other than their parents, and in some instances even when working on the family farm.

Participants must complete some assignments before attending the training on the 27th. To obtain this information and to pay the $10 registration fee by Friday, April 19th. You will need to visit one of the following K-State Research &amp; Extension Offices – Twin Creeks, Golden Prairie, Phillips-Rooks and Cottonwood District.

Some Extension Offices may provide transportation to the training, don’t delay and register by Friday, April 19th for the Tractor &amp; Farm Safety Course in Hoxie.

&nbsp;The Zeta Tau Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity is hosting Derby Days.   As one of the most high-profile events of the fraternity, Derby Days is a means for Sigma Chi chapters to do their part in being the generation to end cancer.

It is an excellent opportunity to promote brotherhood, the spirit of community service and philanthropy while raising funds for the Huntsman Cancer Institute: A National Cancer Institute and a leader in both cancer research and care.

The chapter’s goal is $2,900 this year. Last year, the fraternity raised $2,300.

Volleyball, movie, car bash to help FHSU frat raise funds for cancer institute

The Hays Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, in collaboration with CVBs in Wichita, Abilene, and Dodge City, recently launched the Gunsmoke Trail – a road trip that takes visitors through towns that were mentioned in the hit show of the same name.

Gunsmoke, the Emmy award-winning primetime Western, entertained audiences for 20 years. The show still runs on select networks, with iconic characters telling the story of frontier life in the Old West.

“This collaboration is a win-win for all of our communities,” said Melissa Dixon, Executive Director of the Hays CVB.

“The Gunsmoke fan base is looking for nostalgic Old West experiences that we already have in place, so we just had to make a connection with that audience.”

The Gunsmoke Trail is easily accessible through a mobile “passport” program which allows smart phone users to check in at different stops, earning points for prizes. The passport functions like a mobile app but requires no app download.

Alzheimer's, Dementia education event planned

This event offers community members a valuable opportunity to engage directly with their local legislators and gain insights into key legislative issues.

"The Legislative Coffee series provides a platform for our community to hear updates from our area's legislators and to address their questions and concerns directly,” said Chamber President and CEO Sarah Wasinger. “It's an essential forum for fostering dialogue and understanding between our elected officials and the constituents they serve."

During the event, along with area legislators, attendees will have the chance to hear updates from U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas.



Kansas Sen. Rick Billinger, R-Goodland; Kansas Rep. Ken Rahjes, R-Agra; and Kansas Rep. Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, also plan on attending.

Fort Hays State University’s Science and Mathematics Education Institute (SMEI) is hosting a variety of summer camps for youth entering grades four through eight. Camps are restricted to a maximum of two camps per student and are filling quickly.

All camps run four days per week, Monday through Thursday. Sessions are all three hours each – &nbsp;some in the morning from 9 a.m. to noon and others in the afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m.

•&nbsp;Main Street Math&nbsp;Camp&nbsp;for grades four through six - June 3-6 from 1 to 4 p.m. – Students will work in teams with hands-on activites to design, build, and run their own store on Main Street.

•&nbsp;A Sense of Place: Designing for Folklore and Fairytale&nbsp;Camp&nbsp;for students grades five and six - June 10-13 from&nbsp;9 a.m. to Noon&nbsp;–&nbsp;Students will create their own short story through 2D illustration, 3D image scanning, and design their own 3D model.

•&nbsp;A Sense of Place: Designing for Folklore and Fairytale&nbsp;Camp&nbsp;for students grades seven and eight - June 10-13 from 1 to 4 p.m. – Students will&nbsp;create their own short story through 2D illustration, 3D image scanning, and design their own 3D model.

•&nbsp;Camp North Star&nbsp;for grades five through seven - June 17-20 from&nbsp;9 a.m. to Noon&nbsp;– Explore this camp for budding engineers. Activities will include working with CAD Design to explore rocket designs, Newton’s laws of motion, nanotechnology, robotics, and solid fuel rockets.

•&nbsp;Robot O Rama Camp&nbsp;for grades four and five - June 24-27 from&nbsp;9 a.m. to Noon&nbsp;–&nbsp;Students will learn to build, program, and test LEGO robots using LEGO EV3 software.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

•&nbsp;Robo Challenge Camp&nbsp;for grades six through eight - June 24-27 from 1 to 4 p.m. – Custom build robots that can operate in real world situations. For students with robotics experience.

The registration fee for each camp is $70, and the registration deadline is Friday, May 3.&nbsp;Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of&nbsp;two&nbsp;camps per student.

The Center for Health Improvement at HaysMed invites you to "Walk with a Doc," a health initiative aimed at promoting community wellness and fostering connections between healthcare providers and residents.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 20 from 8 to 9 a.m., this event invites Hays and local area residents to join Dr. Erin Hemphill, hospitalist and The Transplant Network &amp; Saving Sight for an invigorating walk at Big Creek Crossing, across from Gliks. 

Participants will have the chance to learn about organ, eye, and tissue donations, as well as connect with Dr. Hemphill from HaysMed.

"Walk with a Doc" offers a unique opportunity for individuals to engage in physical activity while interacting with healthcare professionals in a relaxed and informal setting. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk at your own pace and distance.

The "Walk with a Doc" event in Hays is open to all community members, and participation is free of charge. Pre-registration is not required, and individuals of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to attend.

Stephanie Howie, fitness director of The Center for Health Improvement, emphasized the importance of consistent physical activity for sustaining optimal health and wellness. According to Howie, dedicating just 30 minutes a day to walking can notably enhance one's well-being and quality of life.

The benefits of walking, as highlighted by the American Heart Association, include improvements in blood pressure and blood sugar levels, maintenance of a healthy body weight, enhancement of mental well-being, and reduction of the risk of osteoporosis.

Reimagined K-State Salina Open House returns with experiences for everyone in community

Ellis County Conservation District announces assistance program applications open

Fort Hays State University is hosting an open house on Wednesday, May 1. We invite you to walk around our campus and visit our buildings. As part of the Open House, you can also witness the annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days (SACAD). The university is happy to invite community members to campus to view the various projects completed by our students, staff, and faculty.

Special activities include academic posters, art and creative works, meet the authors (book exhibition), musical performances, and applied industrial technology projects. Showcased creations feature work from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship, the College of Education, the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, and the Peter Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics.

SACAD 2024 will take place in hybrid format by featuring both online and in-person showcases. Online academic posters will be available from April 29 – May 3.&nbsp;

SACAD is named in honor of the late Dr. John F. Heinrichs (1957-2014). A popular Geosciences professor, an internationally renowned Arctic researcher, and esteemed colleague, Dr. Heinrichs had a tremendous impact on Fort Hays State University. He was a key supporter of faculty and student research, and his efforts were largely responsible for launching Research and Creative Activities Week, now known as John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days, in his honor.

As part of the Open House, you can also witness the annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days (SACAD). The university is happy to invite community members to campus to view the various projects completed by our students, staff, and faculty.Special activities include academic posters, art and creative works, meet the authors (book exhibition), musical performances, and applied industrial technology projects. Showcased creations feature work from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship, the College of Education, the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, and the Peter Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics.SACAD 2024 will take place in hybrid format by featuring both online and in-person showcases. FHSU open house hosts annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days April 29-May 3

The Kiwanis Club of Hays is pleased to continue its annual Flag Project in 2024.

Since 2001, Kiwanis Club of Hays has been growing this beloved community project, where flags are proudly flown across the Hays community thanks to so many of its patriotic citizens and businesses. On average, 44 Kiwanis club members, their families, and friends distribute approximately 1200 U.S. flags five days out of the year. These days include Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Veterans Day. Flags begin their distribution at sunrise and are retired before sunset.

Anyone with a home residence or local business that is located within the Hays city limits is eligible to support the Flag Project. 

For an annual fee of $40 per flag, Kiwanis will provide a 3’ x 5’ U.S. Flag, a pole, and provide a plug in the ground to properly display the flag on the specified days. Locations wishing to have more than one flag may email flags@hayskiwanis.com for pricing information.

To participate in the 2024 Flag program, new customers are encouraged to mail a $40 check payable to Hays Kiwanis to P.O. Kiwanis Club of Hays wishes to extend its gratitude to all past, present, and future Flag Project supporters. The Flag Project is the club’s largest fundraiser. 

Approximately $45,000 in proceeds from this project are reinvested back into the Hays community,&nbsp;specifically through programs supporting local youth, local parks, active military, and veterans.

Kiwanis Club of Hays was chartered on May 5, 1953. The club currently has 95 members and meets weekly for lunch on Thursdays at noon at Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering. All community members are welcome to attend meetings to learn more information about becoming a member. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.

Kiwanis Club of Hays prepares for annual U.S. Flag Project

Fort Hays State University will kick off Forsyth Library’s upcoming renovation project on Tuesday, April 2, with a ceremonial groundbreaking. 

The event will take place at 2:30 p.m. on the main level of Forsyth Library on FHSU’s campus. 

Construction for the $27.7 million renovation will start in May 2024 and is scheduled to wrap up in 2026. 

Attendees will hear from Senator Jerry Moran, President Tisa Mason, Dean of Library Services Ginger Williams, and FHSU Foundation President and CEO Jason Williby.

The public is encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served and optional tours will be available following the event.

Groundbreaking for FHSU Forsyth Library renovation project is Tuesday

LOGAN — The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Hope Blakely of Arvada, Colorado to teach two Joy of Painting classes on April 13 and 14. 

On Saturday, April 13 the class will paint “Valley Homestead,” and on Sunday, April 14 “Serenity.” 

Classes are held in the Hansen Museum Community Room, 110 W. Main Street, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day just like Bob did on TV. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

Discounts are available for Patron and Sustaining Hansen Museum Members. Hansen Museum to offer 'Joy of Painting' classes

The section of Wheatland Ave. in Hays, north of 22nd&nbsp;St. (adjacent to North Central Kansas Technical College), will be closed to through traffic for utility work beginning Monday, April 1.

The street will remain closed for approximately three weeks. &nbsp;

During this time, access to NCKTC will only be available from the East 27th&nbsp;St. access located north of the campus.
