It’s
a celebration for all ages—and the entire community is invited! The Hays
Symphony will be presenting its annual Children’s Halloween Concert, “¡Fiesta
Mexicana!,” on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. in FHSU’s Beach/Schmidt
Performing Arts Center. 

Featured
for the Halloween Concert this year are the vibrant sounds of Mexico with music
by composers Moncayo, Elizondo, and Márquez. This colorful musical lineup
honors Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and Day of the Dead festivities.

In
José Pablo Moncayo's Huapango,
listeners will feel the swirling joy and pride of Mexico's famous fandango, a style of musical composition
that practically invites concert attendees directly to the dance floor.

The
energy continues with José Elizondo's Estampas
Mexicanas, a lively parade of simple folk-like tunes and rhythms. The piece
is a statement which celebrates life and all of its colors! Elizondo's
"Atardecer Tapatío" (from Danzas
Latinoamericanas) draws motifs from Mexican jarabe folk-dance music and the
sound of mariachi bands. It is a tribute to the composer’s homeland.

Finally,
attendees hear one of the most famous orchestral Mexican contemporary classical
music compositions with Arturo Márquez's Danzón
No. 2. Inspired by a visit to a ballroom in Veracruz, the wild danzón will
close out the concert with thrilling push, pull, and pulse.

Before
the concert, parents are encouraged to bring their children in costume to
participate in a series of hands-on music activities starting at 1:15 p.m. All
pre-concert activities will begin in the FHSU Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts
Center lobby. 

Youth
concert-goers can try their hand at violin, viola, cello, and bass in the
String Instrument Petting Zoo led by USD 489 teachers. They can also explore
the other side of the orchestra and Meet the Woodwinds and Brass Families. In
addition, FHSU’s National Association for Music Education (NAfME) students will
assist children in themed Día de Muertos arts and crafts. Hays Public Library
staff will lead a Musical Storytime. For photo opportunities, there will be a
booth curated with fun Día de Muertos, Halloween, and fall-themed props. 

Like
in years past, children dressed in the Halloween spirit will be invited to join
in the Halloween Costume Parade just before the concert where they will march
behind brass players leading the parade. 

Following
the concert, the Hays Symphony will be offering free trick-or-treat bags to the
first 250 children who came for the afternoon pre-concert activities. The
trick-or-treat bags are sponsored by a generous donation from Werth Wealth
Management. 

“¡Fiesta
Mexicana!” marks the eighth year that the Hays Symphony has put on the
Children’s Halloween Concert, an event which invites young people to explore
hands-on the world of orchestral music through an afternoon of family friendly
activities. It’s one of the musicians’ favorite concerts of the year because
they get to share their love of music along with the spooky season, and the
orchestra is eager to see the concert hall full of spirit again this year.

Annual Halloween 'N Horses set for Oct. 29

Catholic Charities invites the community to a Volunteer Roundup Meeting for those interested in joining its mission at their new facility located at 1011 Centennial in Hays. This new facility will house the Catholic Charities offices and a new thrift store onsite. The meeting will take place on October 29 at 11:00 AM at the current office location, downstairs at 122 E. 12th St., Hays, KS 67601 (please note, this is not the new Centennial location).

"Our team is eagerly anticipating the completion of our new facility this fall," said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. "While we don't have an exact opening date yet due to ongoing construction, our contractors are working hard to get everything finished up within the next several weeks. We're confident and excited to welcome our wonderful community members who want to join us in this mission of serving Hays and the surrounding area."

The new thrift store will be open to the public, accepting donations of clothing, household items, and other miscellaneous goods. The organization anticipates being able to start accepting donations in late November or early December.

At this time, there is a need to fill the thrift store volunteer schedule. Volunteers will play a vital role in the operations of the thrift store, which includes running the register, receiving and sorting donations, and assisting on the sales floor.

The Fox Theatre is hosting the Heartland Catbackers club on Saturday to watch the K-State vs West Virginia football game. 

Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m, with the doors and the bar opening at 5:30 p.m.

Get ready for a spooktacular night: Crawl to End Alz 2024

Enhance your oil painting skills in this two-day workshop with experienced artist Laurie Albin. Laurie will cover the basics of oil painting, demonstrate key techniques, and guide students in color development. The workshop will take place at the Logan Youth Center, 402 W. Church, Logan, KS, on October 25th &amp; 26th, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

Participants will use a landscape photo as a reference to create an original work of art. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced painter, you'll focus on value changes in landscapes and learn how to add dramatic flair to your work. Most importantly, you'll experience the joy of applying brush to canvas.

Albin oil painting workshop planned in Logan

The 2024 Annual Fall Cleanup will consist of one and only one sweep through the City beginning October 21st. No set schedule has been established; however, residential curbside services will be first with residential regular alley services following.&nbsp;If you put your trash on the Curb, put your Fall Cleanup items on the Curb. &nbsp; If you put your trash in the Alley, put your Fall Cleanup&nbsp;items in the Alley. The city-wide general schedule for alley services will start after curbside collections are completed. The number of employees committed to the task may vary from day to day; therefore, crews are unable to predict when they will be by a residence. City crews have a 20-minute time limit per residence for regular collections and 10 minutes for tree collections. Any items remaining after 20 minutes of pickup will be the responsibility of the property owner.

As in years past, the City WILL NOT pick up tires and hazardous waste. Tires should be disposed of at the Ellis County Landfill, and hazardous waste items should be disposed of at the Ellis County Hazardous Waste Facility. Please call 628-9460 or 628-9449 for detailed information.

The Annual Fall Cleanup Program, set to begin October 21st, is an opportunity for residents to discard items that would not be picked up in normal trash collection.

Waste should be placed in four separate piles in preparation of the Fall Cleanup. The piles should be organized in the following manner:

1. Tree limbs and brush - Small Quantities Only! (no longer than 12 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter); bamboo bundled in 4’ lengths; all yard and garden waste MUST be bagged

2. Construction and Demolition Debris, i.e., lumber, drywall, bricks, sinks, wires, etc. (please pull or bend over nails and place small quantities of concrete, bricks, and plaster in containers)

3. White Goods/Metals, i.e., guttering, siding, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, metal swing sets, propane tanks for grills, lawn mowers, etc.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; *Refrigerators and freezers must be empty of all items in order for them to be picked up.

4. Municipal Waste (all other items), i.e., furniture, carpet, tv’s, computers, etc.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; *Exceptionally large items, such as hot tubs and swing sets, should be cut down into more manageable pieces in order for them to be picked up.

**TO AVOID WRONGFUL PICK UP, “TREASURED ITEMS” SHOULD BE TAGGED OR REMOVED FROM THE COLLECTION AREA**

Again, the Annual Fall Cleanup Program will begin on October 21st and will continue until one and only one complete sweep through the City has occurred. All items should be set out by this date, as crews cannot make any return trips. To avoid creating a nuisance, please DO NOT set any items out before October 1st. Remember, crews cannot predict when they will be by a residence, so HAVE ALL ITEMS OUT BY 7:00 am OCTOBER 21st, BUT NOT BEFORE OCTOBER 1ST. Maximum 20-minute time limit per residence for regular collections and 10 minutes for tree collections.

The number of employees committed to the task may vary from day to day; therefore, crews are unable to predict when they will be by a residence. City crews have a 20-minute time limit per residence for regular collections and 10 minutes for tree collections. Both candidates will respond to a variety of questions, with the discussion moderated by Sarah Wasinger, President and CEO of The Chamber in Hays, Kansas.

The forum aims to provide local residents with the information they need to make informed decisions for the upcoming election.

“The Chamber is dedicated to ensuring that our members and the community are well-informed on important local issues. The Chamber to host ‘Enhancing your Customer Service’ seminar with Mike Henke

LARNED—The grounds of the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum will soon be filled with the rumbling of the sounds of antique and vintage farm equipment.

Prepare for a carnival-like atmosphere, and join the crowd as everyone enjoys the weekend of farming, food and fun on October 12 and 13 for the 24th Annual Tired Iron Show.

This year’s event will highlight John Deere.

Upon arrival, visitors will enter through the Peddlers Market gateway to see the booths of various arts, crafts and collectibles. There will be several food concession trucks as well.

One of the many returning activities at this year’s event includes the ever-popular Anvil Shoot.

The Kansas Anvil Shooters will shoot the anvil three times each day.

On both Saturday and Sunday, there will be scheduled demonstrations of wheat threshing, corn shelling, and blacksmithing.There will also be a working miniature farm equipment display.The tractor pull will begin Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

For the first time in 10 years, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band returns to Colby, Kansas as part of the band’s Coast to Coast tour, performing a free 7:30 p.m. concert on Wednesday, October 16th at the Colby Event Center.

The event will be held at the Portis Community Center, located at 206 Market Street in Portis. KDOT and project staff will provide a project overview starting at 5:30 p.m. Design plans and detour information will be available for review.

The project is part of KDOT’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, known as IKE. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2025.

&nbsp;Catholic Charities invites the community to a Volunteer Roundup Meeting for those interested in joining its mission at their new facility located at 1011 Centennial in Hays. This new facility will house the Catholic Charities offices and a new thrift store onsite.  </figure>Submitted&nbsp;Catholic Charities invites the community to a Volunteer Roundup Meeting for those interested in joining its mission at their new facility located at 1011 Centennial in Hays. This new facility will house the Catholic Charities offices and a new thrift store onsite. The meeting will take place on October 29 at 11:00 AM at the current office location, downstairs at 122 E. 12th St., Hays, KS 67601 (please note, this is not the new Centennial location)."Our team is eagerly anticipating the completion of our new facility this fall," said Megan Robl, executive director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. "While we don't have an exact opening date yet due to ongoing construction, our contractors are working hard to get everything finished up within the next several weeks. We're confident and excited to welcome our wonderful community members who want to join us in this mission of serving Hays and the surrounding area."The new thrift store will be open to the public, accepting donations of clothing, household items, and other miscellaneous goods. The organization anticipates being able to start accepting donations in late November or early December.At this time, there is a need to fill the thrift store volunteer schedule. Volunteers will play a vital role in the operations of the thrift store, which includes running the register, receiving and sorting donations, and assisting on the sales floor.Community members interested in volunteering at the new Catholic Charities facility are encouraged to attend this important meeting. Barton Community College’s annual literary publication, “Prairie Ink”, has begun accepting entries for its 16th edition.&nbsp;

The editors are looking for the following types of original work to be considered for publication: fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, graphic narrative, biography, photography, sketch, painting, digital art, and pictures of 3D art. Submissions will be accepted through Nov. 24 with submissions after that considered for the following edition.

Barton students, alums, and all residents of the seven counties in Barton’s service region: Barton, Pawnee, Rush, Russell, Rice, Stafford, and Ellsworth counties, as well as; Barton’s Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, and Grandview Plaza campuses are encouraged to submit entries.
