Barton Community College’s annual literary publication, “Prairie Ink”, has begun accepting entries for its 16th edition.&nbsp;

The editors are looking for the following types of original work to be considered for publication: fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, drama, graphic narrative, biography, photography, sketch, painting, digital art, and pictures of 3D art. Submissions will be accepted through Nov. 24 with submissions after that considered for the following edition.

Barton students, alums, and all residents of the seven counties in Barton’s service region: Barton, Pawnee, Rush, Russell, Rice, Stafford, and Ellsworth counties, as well as; Barton’s Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, and Grandview Plaza campuses are encouraged to submit entries.

Latest Yuengling Flight Golf Cart finalists announced

FORT LARNED – It’s time to get ready for this year’s Candlelight Tour at Fort Larned National Historic Site.

This year we’re exploring the role of the Post Trader in the life of a frontier military post. Post traders were merchants granted a license to operate a store on the post to provide soldiers with items not issued by the Army. Being able to get things like soap, writing paper, and special foods, just to name a few, was very helpful for men stationed far from towns or cities. The Post Trader had his downsides, though, one of which was selling alcohol in his store, which could cause lots of problems for the officers and men. The scenes in this year’s tour will highlight both the good and bad side of having a civilian store on post.

The tour will be on October 12th&nbsp;with reservations beginning on September 30th&nbsp;at 8:30 am. Reservations can only be made by phone at 620-285-6911, or in person at the Visitor Center. &nbsp;The first tour will leave at 7:30 pm and then every 15 minutes afterwards, until the last tour leaves at 10:15 pm for a total of 12 tours. Each tour has space for 20 people and reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

Your Voice Through Cancer craft show set for Saturday

In celebration of the 40th Annual Chamber Awards Banquet, The Chamber in Hays, Kansas, is embarking on a special project to commemorate four decades of community engagement, business growth, and individual achievements.

As part of this milestone, Chamber staff are reaching out to past award winners, banquet attendees, and participants, asking them to share memories, photographs, and videos that capture the essence of the event over the last 40 years.

The annual banquet has long served as a cornerstone event for the Hays business community, celebrating the accomplishments of local businesses, organizations, and individuals who have made a significant impact on the region.

With the 40th anniversary approaching, The Chamber is taking the opportunity to reflect on the contributions of those who have shaped the local economy and culture.

Sarah Wasinger, President and CEO of The Chamber in Hays, expressed her excitement for the project, noting the importance of capturing these stories for future generations.

“As we celebrate the 40th Annual Chamber Awards Banquet, it’s not just about looking back but also about recognizing how far we’ve come and what we’ve achieved together as a community,” Wasinger said. “The awards banquet has been a platform to highlight the incredible businesses and individuals who have made Hays what it is today, and we

want to honor that legacy by documenting the memories that have been created over the past 40 years.”

These materials will be incorporated into a multimedia presentation that will be featured during the 2025 banquet, offering attendees a chance to relive past moments and see how the event has evolved.

“We want to bring people together to remember and celebrate the role the Annual Chamber Awards Banquet has played in their professional and personal lives,” Wasinger said. “When you look at the names of past recipients, you see a collection of people and businesses who have dedicated their lives and passion towards making Hays and Ellis County a special place to call home.”

To participate in this unique project, previous attendees and award recipients are encouraged to submit their materials to The Chamber by December 1.

Submissions can be sent via email to hayscc@hayschamber.com or dropped off at The Chamber office at 2700 Vine St.

For those wanting to set up a time to capture those memories on video are encouraged to schedule a time with chamber staff.

All submissions will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in the banquet’s multimedia presentation.

Those with compelling stories or particularly notable contributions may also be featured in a special retrospective video series leading up to the event.

The Chamber launches annual Awards Banquet project, calls for memories from past winners and participants

The annual Oktoberfest Hays celebration, a beloved tradition that honors the region’s rich Volga German heritage, is set to return with a full lineup of exciting activities on Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5.

Event organizers have officially released the schedule, offering a packed weekend of entertainment, contests, and cultural festivities for all ages.

This year’s Oktoberfest will be held at Municipal Park on Friday and Saturday, drawing thousands of attendees from the local area and beyond.

The event features a blend of traditional Volga German-inspired activities, live music, food, and competitions, providing two days of community-focused fun.

Friday, October 4th: Traditional Celebrations and Contests

The Oktoberfest festivities will kick off on Friday, October 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with an opening ceremony scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Municipal Park.

The day will begin with the ceremonial Tapping of the Keg at 11:00 a.m., a highlight that draws onlookers eager to join in the first toast of the festival.

Attendees can test their strength and endurance with a variety of competitions, including the Stein Holding Contest at 2:00 p.m., followed by the Deutsch Hops Contest at 4:00 p.m., both open to participants aged 21 and over.

For food enthusiasts, the OktoberFEAST Contest will take place at 5:00 p.m., offering a chance to celebrate and savor the flavors of Oktoberfest.

Live entertainment will fill the park throughout the day, with performances from popular local bands, including the Ron Werth Band, Rice County Line, and Jimmy Dee and The Fabulous Destinations.

Visitors can also enjoy park-wide attractions such as the Beer Puppeteers, High Striker, and the traditional Mug Toss.

Friday’s festivities will wrap up at 7:00 p.m., closing out the first day of the celebration.

Saturday, October 5th: Family Fun and Homecoming Parade

Oktoberfest continues on Saturday, October 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a strong focus on family-friendly activities and entertainment.

The day will kick off with the FHSU Homecoming Parade at 11:00 a.m., followed by a special Oktoberfest welcome ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

Competitive spirits can join in on the Cornhole Tournament at 12:00 p.m., with the crowd-favorite World’s Largest Bierock Reveal at 1:30 p.m., sponsored by Lewis Toyota.

Other fun games and contests include the German Freeze Game at 2:00 p.m., the Pumpkin Pass at 3:00 p.m., and the Pumpkin Rolling Contest at 4:00 p.m. for children in the West Shelter House.

Live music and entertainment will continue to keep the energy high throughout the day, with performances by Galen Schmidtberger, Karl Meis, and Rice County Line. Kids will have plenty to do as well, with games and entertainment available from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., featuring the popular Jammin Randy show. Bounce houses will also be open for young festival-goers from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

 A waxing gibbous moon, the ringed beauty of our solar system, our spiral galaxy neighbor, and a double star system in the Cygnus constellation will all be in view during the stargazing event hosted at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center on Friday, Oct. 11 from 8:30-10:30 p.m.

The Fort Hays State University Astronomy Club, led by Dr. Paul Adams, College of Education Dean, and Dr. Jack Maseberg, associate professor, will help visitors locate several deep space objects using several high-powered telescopes.

Come be dazzled by the craters and seas on the moon, the stunning rings and moons of Saturn, M31 Andromeda Galaxy, and double star Albireo, with one star shining blue and the other gold,and gobal clusters packed with thousands of stars. We may also be able to spot M13, known as the Great Hercules Cluster.

Bring the whole family for a night of stargazing, cookies, hot cocoa, and discovery. Learn about the wonders of the universe from the knowledgeable members of FHSU’s Astronomy Club.

Beginning Monday, Mayer Specialty Services, Goddard,&nbsp; will be performing rehabilitation of sanitary sewer manholes at various locations in the south part of the City of Hays. 

Work is expected to take approximately two months. 

Rehabilitation of sanitary sewer manholes will not affect the sanitary sewer system and customers will see no disruption in service. 

Traffic should remain unaffected by this project and traffic control signs will be posted if necessary.

The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Hope Blakeley of Arvada, Colorado to teach two Joy of Painting classes on October 12th and 13th. On Saturday, October 12th, the class will paint “Cauldron Bubble,” and on Sunday, October 13th, “Fall Sunset.” Classes are held in the Logan Youth Center, 402 W Church Street, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day just like Bob did on TV. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

The Kansas Department of Transportation expects to begin work on the first phase of a modernization project on approximately 6 miles of K-23 in Sheridan County the week of Sept. 30.

The project will involve full-depth reconstruction of the pavement&nbsp;<a>into a 30-foot paved surface with 3-foot turf shoulders</a>&nbsp;starting near Road 70S and extending north to Walnut Avenue in Hoxie. The bridges spanning Sand Creek and the South Fork Solomon River will also be replaced.

Work will be phased across multiple construction seasons, with most activity occurring off of the roadway in 2024. Daily lane closures may be necessary at times, and traffic will be directed by flaggers in those instances.

<a>KDOT plans to close the highway in March 2025 and reopen in late fall.&nbsp;</a>A state route detour will be in effect during the closure. More information about the closure and detour will be provided at a later date.

The project is expected to be fully completed in early 2026.

The project is part of KDOT’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, known as IKE. Sporer Land Development of Oakley is the primary contractor with a total contract cost of approximately $19 million. K-State Research &amp; Extension will host the Kansas Landowner Conference on Oct. 10 -11 at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan.

This conference is for owners of agriculture land who did not necessarily grow up on the farm or those who inherited a farm and do not know where to start on how to handle being a landowner and working with a tenant.

Topics presented will be land values and trends, landowner-tenant communication, estate planning, wind and solar leases, hunting leases, carbon credits, conservation programs, farm economy outlook and more.

Kansas Landowner Conference is Oct. 10-11

Come and help us celebrate Becky Kiser's retirement.

This is a come-and-go event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Eagle Media Center, 2300 Hall.

Kiser has been an Eagle employee-owner since 2005, officially retiring this September to end a successful 19-year career.

She's been a consistent asset to Eagle as the Hays Post news director and a part of the Hays community before her start with Eagle.

She was professor at Fort Hays State University, been an anchor on local television with KAYS-TV, KBSH,and ECTV.

You can hear her on all Hays Eagle Radio stations as she does the local news.

 You can find her Thursday nights covering city commission meetings. 

She is currently on the United Way board and a member of Women Who Lead to name a few. 

Becky has won numerous awards over the years, the most recent are as follows: 2024 KAB honorable for multimedia reporting; 2023 KAB first place for multimedia reporting, second place for complete newscast and honorable mention for a special program; 2022 KPA first place for best story originating from a public notice, and 2022 KAB honorable mention for complete newscast.

She has done so much more throughout her career.

Please stop by and wish her the best. She will be missed and we hope she will enjoy her retirement years.

Sesquicentennial Action Committee meeting set for Monday night

The public is invited to be a part of the grand unveiling of the new Ellis Historic Walking Trail on Sept. 27 anytime between 8:30-11:30 a.m., downtown Ellis.

The south end of the trail will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony with WGS students at 8:30 AM, held at the historic Stone School marker in the front lawn. At 8:55 AM, the north end will host a ribbon-cutting with SMS students at the historic marker near the Washington Street Bridge. This scenic 1.5-mile trail offers a journey through history, connecting these two significant locations.

Experience history like never before with captivating re-enactments featuring notable figures such as John Mulvey, Praying John, Sheriff Miller, Buffalo Bill, Mother Smith, and Walter P. Chrysler. Some trail markers will have live hosts to guide you, while others will invite you to explore at your own pace through engaging readings.

While exploring downtown Ellis, be sure to check out the impressive mural inside the mini-train garage, whether you walk the entire 1.5-mile trail or just part of it. A knowledgeable host will guide you, connecting this stunning artwork to the vibrant history of the new walking trail.

Special guests joining in from Nicodemus will be descendants of former enslaved African Americans who left Kentucky after the Civil War in search of freedom in Kansas, often referred to as the “Promised Land.” Their ancestors traveled by train to Ellis and then embarked on a 40-mile journey north to Nicodemus, following the historic “Ellis Trail.” Keep an eye out for Buffalo Bill along the walking trail! In the 1870s, he was contracted by the railroad to supply buffalo meat for workers and restaurants in Ellis. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect with history!

Trail maps will be available at the Alliance Office, located at 820 Washington Street, as well as at any trail marker you choose to start from—look for the colorful pinwheels that identify the markers. Enjoy autumn treats for visitors on the morning of the trail opening, while supplies last! Ellis History Booklets will also be available for purchase at the Alliance.
