The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of McCracken public water supply system located in Rush County. KDHE: Boil order rescinded for McCracken

Those who have ever thought about learning to fly can find out more on Thursday as Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1655 hosts its second “Fly Now” informational program on learning to become a pilot. Attendees will be able to register for a free introductory training flight sponsored by Hays Aircraft. 

EAA Chapter 1655 is a local organization that is part of the national Experimental Aircraft Association. The group is dedicated to growing participation in aviation by sharing the ways people can get started in this fun and fulfilling recreation and career. 

The program will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thirsty’s Event Center, just off of 27th and Vine in Hays.

“Our first 'Fly Now' program was so successful, our room was overflowing, but it was exciting to see all the interest in flying and becoming a pilot," Chapter President Gary Shorman said.

Anyone interested in aviation is invited to attend. Local pilots will be on hand to discuss why and how they learned to fly. The meeting also will cover the steps and requirements for becoming a pilot, provide tips on how to make it economical, and provide information on how you can get started.

 If you think piloting your own plane, soaring over the plains, might be fun … just wait till you get behind the control stick.

The Hays Chapter of the EAA is one of about 900 chapters around the world, which provide activities for local aviation enthusiasts with a mission of growing participation in aviation by sharing “The Spirit of Aviation.”

Chapter activities range from monthly meetings to airport open houses, fly-ins, educational programs, and special events that share aviation with the community and build a stronger bond between local aviation and the public.

Hays Experimental Aircraft Association to host Fly Now event Thursday

HAYS – It’s not too late for Hays area high school students to sign up for a week-long musical theater workshop planned in early June.

From June 6-10, incoming freshmen through outgoing college freshmen will create and perform an original musical production during the in-person Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts workshop at Hays High School.

In just five days, participating students will conceive, write, choreograph, compose, design, rehearse and perform an original piece of musical theater in collaboration with a staff of professional artists. Hays students had a previous opportunity to work with&nbsp;Lovewell staff during a song-writing workshop in March.

No previous music or theater experience is required. To make the production come together, the process needs writers, actors, poets, dancers, singers, dreamers, visual artists, musicians, composers, designers, and creative students of ALL kinds.

The first three days of the workshop are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fourth day is from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the fifth day (performance day) is from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Workshops are also being held in Hoxie, Phillipsburg, Colby, Concordia and Salina during June and July. Students are encouraged to participate in a workshop closest to them. For more information or to register, visit lovewell.org, and click on Apply, and then Kansas.

Bob Ross painting classes return to Hansen Museum

PRATT&nbsp;– An angler’s prized catch may actually be worth a prize this spring and summer in Kansas, thanks to the return of the Great Kansas Fishing Derby. This year’s Derby will run May 15 to September 15, 2022. 

During that time, anglers can try their luck at catching one of more than 500 specially tagged fish located in public waterbodies across the Sunflower State. 

The statewide competition is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Kansas Wildscape Foundation, Bass Pro-Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Kansas State Fair, Firewater Music Festival, City of Independence, and many local retailers.&nbsp;

“It’s a new year, but our goal remains the same - get people fishing and generate support for communities and nearby waters,” said David Breth, KDWP sportfishing education coordinator. “Participants will be excited to know that we’ve extended this year’s Derby to give anglers more time to win. We also added a few more lakes, and there are more tagged fish."&nbsp;

Pre-registration is not required, and participation is free, though normal fishing license requirements remain in effect. Ksfishderby.com will also allow anglers and non-anglers to register to win additional prizes through random drawings.&nbsp;

"Businesses, municipalities, and more are supporting the Great Kansas Fishing Derby by sponsoring many of our prizes, and without their support, the Derby wouldn’t exist,” added Breth. “Thanks to them, anglers can win concert tickets, state fair kid's packs, gift cards to Bass Pro/Cabelas and KDWP, fishing tackle, experiences, cabin stays, and cash this year.”

If that’s not incentive enough, the Derby offers another major prize this year. Every angler who catches and redeems a valid derby tag will be entered into a drawing to win a lifetime hunting and fishing license sponsored by Kansas Wildscape Foundation.&nbsp;

All participating waterbodies are open to the public and managed, in whole or in-part, by KDWP. Also included in the list of participating waters are ponds and lakes currently enrolled in KDWP’s Community Fisheries Assistance Program. By leveraging funding from federal excise taxes on fishing equipment, KDWP leases public access – at no additional cost to the public – to gorgeous waters that once required special county, community or city permits. KDWP: Great Kansas Fishing Derby starts Sunday; more prizes, time extended 

ABILENE - The Symphony at Sunset annual D-Day Commemoration Concert returns to the campus grounds at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum on Saturday, June 4. Several programs are scheduled leading up to the D-Day commemorative concert including the WWII Emerging Scholars Symposium.

Admission to the concert and museum is free all day. 

Concert activities begin at 4 p.m. with Salina-based band Everyday Lights performing at 5:30 p.m., followed by the 1st Infantry Division Band at 7 p.m., and the Salina Symphony takes the stage just as the sun sets around 8:30 p.m. 

Food and beverage vendors open at 4 p.m. No weapons or outside alcohol are permitted on federal property.&nbsp; Small, soft-sided coolers are allowed; however all bags are subject to inspection. Remember to dress for the elements and bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray!

Guests are invited to arrive early and make time to visit the temporary exhibit Drawn to Combat: Bill Mauldin &amp; the Art of War. This traveling exhibit from Pritzker Military Museum &amp; Library debuts in Abilene on June 4 and runs through November 27. This retrospective of work by two-time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, Bill Mauldin, about our nation's time of war, civil rights, and social justice is an absolute must-see.

The State of Kansas Treasurer’s Office has planned visits to museums across the state in celebration of this anniversary — culminating with a final event on May 29 to officially recognize 529 Day.

During each visit, the Treasurer and his staff will hand out informational materials about Learning Quest 529 accounts, and participants attending the event will be entered to win a random drawing for $1,000 to establish a Learning Quest 529 account or add the cash to an existing Learning Quest 529 account.

“I encourage Kansans to come visit with me as we are out and about across the state. We want to do our best to make sure that folks know about this opportunity to save for the next step in their education journey. We know that supporting education savings means supporting the future workforce of Kansas,” said&nbsp;Treasurer Lynn Rogers.

With the rising costs of education, Learning Quest 529 saving plans offer Kansas families an opportunity to save for school and enjoy tax benefits, all while reducing the burden of student loan debt. 

Any U.S. citizen or resident may open an account or be a beneficiary. There are no age or income requirements, and anyone can contribute any amount to the accounts up to $435,000. Funds can be used to cover costs of public, private, community, technical, and vocational schools as well as registered apprenticeship programs, and student debt.

State treasurer to promote 529 Day in Hays this month

We are proud to welcome the 41 graduates of the Class of 2022 into the prestigious ranks of Thomas More Prep-Marian Alumni.&nbsp;

Commencement ceremonies will take place on Sunday, May 22 at 4:00 in 
the afternoon in Al Billinger Fieldhouse. The Baccalaureate Mass will

TOPEKA - Registration is now open for the Kansas Stockmanship &amp; Stewardship event, June 16-18 in Leavenworth, Kan. Stockmanship &amp; Stewardship is a unique educational experience for cattle producers featuring low-stress cattle handling demonstrations, Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) educational sessions, facility design sessions and industry updates that you won’t find anywhere else.

“In today’s world, no matter the beef production system you are involved with, stockmanship and stewardship are more important than ever,” said Curt Pate, Stockmanship &amp; Stewardship clinician, and cattle handling expert. “This quality program combines age-old skills with modern practices to improve your bottom line and quality of life.”

The three-day event includes tours, classroom sessions and live cattle demonstrations with hands-on opportunities for attendees. The first day features a half-day tour including visits to Kauffman Stadium, Bichelmeyer Meats and J&amp;N Ranch. The evening concludes with dinner at the Schwinn Farm Barn and a keynote presentation by Ron Wilson, rancher and cowboy poet.

Classroom sessions on day two include topics such as economics, grazing management, importance of mental health, entrepreneurship, marketing concepts as well as a meat cutting demonstration, concluding with dinner and a live band. The final day at Due West Ranch Equestrian Center features stockmanship principles, safety considerations, chuteside demonstrations and a BQA training. The Hays Area Children's Center and Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas are collaborating on&nbsp;a transition process for Part C,&nbsp;Tiny-k services in Ellis County and a portion of Rush County. &nbsp;

Infant-toddler early intervention services are available to infants and toddlers to enhance development and minimize their potential for developmental delays, and to recognize the significant brain development that occurs during the child’s first three years. Intervention services include screenings, home visits, occupational, physical, speech or behavioral therapy and other intervention services.

This home-based service previously provided through the HACC, will officially transition over to DSNWK's Kid-Link services on May 15, 2022. The HACC will continue to operate their daycare services without change at the Children's Center on the FHSU campus. &nbsp;

Both the HACC and DSNWK are working to make this a smooth transition and would like to express our appreciation to all the affected families involved in this Part C,&nbsp;Tiny-k program for their help, patience and understanding as we work together through this transition process. &nbsp;

DSNWK's Kid-Link program has been proudly serving families in several surrounding counties in northwest Kansas including Norton, Phillips, Rooks, Smith, Osborne and Russell since 1976. &nbsp;

Part C Tiny-k services transitioning from HACC to DSNWK

The City of Hays Water Resources Department has contracted with Pro Pipe, Denver, to conduct sewer line cleaning and inspections at the locations shown on the above map. 

Cleaning will begin Monday. Pro Pipe should be completed with the entire project by Friday, July 1.

Pro Pine will perform light cleaning and video inspection of 118,177 linear feet (22 miles) of sanitary sewer with a budget authority not to&nbsp;exceed $140,000. The 2022 program continues the goal of performing cleaning of sanitary&nbsp;sewer lines on a five-year cleaning cycle.&nbsp;

Door hanger notices will be placed on homes and businesses affected prior to cleaning. Work will begin at the north end of the project area and proceed south until completed. 

During this process, residents may experience a rumbling sound, in addition to the possibility of water entering your sink, bathtub and/or toilet. Sewer lines can develop air pressure or a partial vacuum from the cleaning process. If you will not be home or on vacation during this time of sewer line cleaning, please protect your home by keeping your toilet lids down.

Registration open for TMP-M summer camps

Beginning Monday, Mayer Specialty Services, Goddard, will be performing rehabilitation of sanitary sewer manholes at locations in the south part of Hays.  See the map above for locations.

Mayer will rehab 50 manholes&nbsp;not to exceed the budgeted amount of $125,000. Additional manholes for rehabilitation have been identified to the north of the project area.

 Work is expected to take approximately three months. 

 Rehabilitation of sanitary sewer manholes will not affect the sanitary sewer system and customers will see no disruption in service.  Traffic should remain unaffected by this project and traffic control signs will be posted if necessary.

Manhole rehabilitation is generally considered to have a 50 to 60-year lifespan when the&nbsp;right material is properly applied. This project focuses on manholes in high acidic&nbsp;environments and high sewer use lines.

The Department of Water Resources initiated the manhole rehabilitation program in 2018.&nbsp;

The United Way of Ellis County is sponsoring a Tardeada to promote information and cultural sharing with the Hispanic community.

The Tardeada, a Mexican-American term, meaning to party in the afternoon, will be Saturday at the Downtown Pavilion at 10th and Main in Hays. From 4 to 6 p.m., the event will include food, music and information booths. Food, DJ and a dance will be from 6 to 10 p.m.

Immaculate Heart of Mary will have matachine dancers to perform a dance honoring the Feast of the Lady of Guadalupe from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

"The  Tardeada Community Fiesta was created to include the community," said Meleny Jacome, United Way administrative assistant, "but also the Hispanic population to have something there for them, so they can learn about our partner agencies, learn about businesses, learn about services that are available for them. 

"We also wanted to have an event where [Hispanic families] could feel included in the community and have something for them that they could celebrate their culture."

Jacome said the event is open to all people of all ages and is also meant to help the community at-large learn about the Hispanic culture.

Cultural booths, which will also be offered from 4 to 6 p.m., will focus on the culture and history of different Spanish-speaking cultures.

"The goal is to have a more inclusive community that celebrates diversity," Jacome said.

Jacome noted the Hispanic population is the largest minority population in Ellis County. More than 1,700 people in Ellis County identify as Hispanic, according to the 2020 census.

Ten of the United Way partner agencies will be in attendance. Spanish interpreters will be on-hand to help the agencies and businesses share information with Spanish speakers.

"We really want to get people informed about what United Way does and our partner agencies do," Jacome said.

Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will have a raffle for a piñata. Other nonprofits will have donation jars.

Eagle Radio and Hays Post will be at the event answering questions. The company also hopes to demonstrate how users can set preferences on their devices to translate Hays Post into Spanish.

The Hays Convention and Visitor's Bureau and the Wonder Women League will also be on hand.

Taco Riendo will be on location during the entire event. Ten percent of the truck's proceeds from that night will go to the United Way. Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will also be selling Latin food as a fundraiser.

There will be a piñata and face-painting for the children, so parents are encouraged to bring their whole families to attend.

"Come with an open mind and be ready to learn," Jacome said. "It's for both cultures, for the Hispanic culture and the non-Hispanic culture. Be ready to learn about the United Way and what it offers and be ready to learn about different cultures that are here in Hays.

"Be ready to celebrate the minority groups."
