The opening of the 41st-annual 5-State Photography Exhibition at the Hays Arts Center, 112 E. 11th, will anchor the 2024 Hays Art Council Winter Art Walk&nbsp;from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

"The show is very popular," said Brenda Meder, executive director of the arts council. "It has 150 amazing photographs chosen by the juror from 588 outstanding pieces submitted by photographers in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Colorado.

"It's going to be an amazing show," she said.

<a href="https://danwhite.com/">Dan White</a>, Kansas City, was a first-time juror for the competition.

The internationally published photographer has won numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize, for his work on the Kansas City Star newspaper team covering the 1981 collapse of the Hyatt Regency Hotel skywalks. White continues his 30-year commercial fine art photographer career and was recently inducted into the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame.

Most of the 18 stops on the art walk are in downtown Hays businesses. Student collections are also exhibited at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"There are features from a senior BFA exhibition as well as an MFA exhibition at the university. Community artists are also featured in showcases," Meder said.

Meder says the day can be topped off with Christmas Past at Old Fort Hays that evening.

"It is another way to show the incredible creative and cultural spirit across the community, truly from morning until night," Meder said.

Meder said the host locations share diverse art, including art made by children.

The Cottonwood Extension District Office will highlight children's artwork from local home, group and child care centers.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Make-and-take LEGO printmaking for all ages with FHSU art education students and instructor Brian Hutchinson will be hosted at eyeSMILE Vision and Dental, 1300 Main.

The literary arts and the FHSU English Department will be represented at the Hays Public Library, 1205 Main, with host Eileen Veatch, the FHSU poet laureate.&nbsp;

Annual Hays Arts Council Winter Art Walk Saturday

As the 2024 holiday season commences, Fort Hays State University’s annual toy-building event is approaching quickly.

The 35th Annual Fred Ruda’s Teaming up for Tots event is set to take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Center for Applied Technology at Fort Hays State University. This year, volunteers from the community will build over 180 wooden helicopter toys that will be distributed to children in need in our community.

Students in the Department of Applied Technology have designed the toy and all the processes, jigs, and fixtures needed to produce the toys on a mass scale. Community members are asked to volunteer to run a station. Jobs include but aren’t limited to running machinery, moving pieces from one part of the assembly line to another, gluing and assembling parts, sanding, and applying oil finish to the production toys.

“This is one of the best opportunities for our students to give back to the community,” said Zach Pixler, Assistant Professor of Applied Technology. “Not only do they learn more about the manufacturing process, they get to flex their creative muscles a bit, practice critical thinking skills, and see the positive impact that their hard work has on those around them. This year’s helicopter toy incorporates some different materials, so it’s a challenge for our students. I’m excited to see them all come together on our line!”

Building will commence at 9 a.m. and will be completed by lunchtime. Join us for coffee and donuts before the event and pizza after the build. All ages are welcome. No sign-up is necessary; just bring safety glasses and be ready to build.

The “Little Town of Bethlehem” nativity at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Vincent will be open for visitors on&nbsp;Sundays &nbsp;Dec. 8, 15, 22,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;Christmas Day.&nbsp;

This is the 98th year of the nativity, begun by the parish priest Fr. Callistus Rectenwald in 1927.&nbsp; 

Over the years, the nativity has become a worldwide representation of Christmas.&nbsp; 

Rocks from all 50 states and 105 countries surround the scene, in particular rocks from the Cave of Lourdes and the Sea of Galilee.&nbsp; 

Infant Jesus is from Spain, and Mary, Joseph and the Three Kings are from Germany. 

A special section of the nativity is dedicated to our veterans who could not be home for Christmas over the years, featuring rocks from Germany, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Wake Island and Christmas Island to name a few. 

The nativity has had special lighting effects added the last few years - a color changing rock show and a neon blue-lit sky in the background.&nbsp; 

Four trickling waterfalls,&nbsp; animals and shepherds dot the scene surrounding the Bethlehem Inn, and the stable made from a nearby pear tree in 1927.

A long-time campus tradition is coming up to celebrate the holiday season at&nbsp;Fort Hays State University.&nbsp;President Mason will kick this event off, followed by multiple speakers including this year’s Homecoming King and Queen, prior to the lighting of the tree.

The holiday tree-lighting ceremony will be in front of Sheridan Hall. The event&nbsp;is&nbsp;open to the public&nbsp;and will begin at&nbsp;5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. &nbsp;

A variety of activities will follow the tree lighting, including creating Christmas ornaments and mini-wreaths, carriage rides beginning at 5:30, and photos with Santa Claus. Visit Santa’s workshop to write letters to Santa, play games, and make Christmas crafts.&nbsp;

The event is sponsored by several FHSU offices: the Office of Student Engagement, the Office of the President, and International Student Services.&nbsp;

has officially opened sponsorship opportunities for the 2025 Wild West
Festival, scheduled for July 2–July 5, 2025, offering local businesses
and organizations the chance to support one of the region’s most beloved
events.

This annual festival brings
affordable, high-quality family entertainment to the citizens of Hays, Ellis

Julie Edgeman, newly elected
president of the Wild West Festival Committee, emphasized sponsors and

and organizations the chance to support one of the region’s most beloved
events. This annual festival brings
affordable, high-quality family entertainment to the citizens of Hays, Ellis
County, and the surrounding communities.Julie Edgeman, newly elected
president of the Wild West Festival Committee, emphasized sponsors and
volunteers' critical role in the event's success.“Our sponsors and volunteers are
the foundation of the Wild West Festival,” Edgeman said. “Their dedication
ensures we can continue delivering a fun, family-friendly experience year after
year. We encourage businesses and individuals to join us in creating an
unforgettable 2025 celebration.”Sponsorship benefits include logo
placement on the festival’s website and social media channels, regional radio
advertising in the weeks leading up to the event, and the ability to purchase
additional VIP tickets at a reduced rate of $200 or general admission tickets

LOGAN -&nbsp;The Hansen Museum is honored to be chosen as the debut venue for the exhibition, Kansas from 400’ or Less. This exhibition features a collection of photographs by Thomas Zimmerman (formerly known as the Farmin’ Artist) that have never been seen by the public before. In preparation for this exhibition, Zimmerman has quietly worked over the past three years to accumulate these photographs while keeping his followers guessing about his activities.

Diving into a new arena, Thomas has taken his photography to new heights—literally—as the entire exhibition is shot using drones. Known for his stunning Kansas landscapes, Zimmerman recognized that employing a drone would provide perspectives unmatched by ground-based photography. Many Hansen Museum regular visitors will remember Zimmerman’s gorgeous Kansas skies from his first exhibition entitled the Farmin’ Artist exhibited at the Museum in late 2019.

In the world of art photography, perspective is everything, and drones offer a vantage point that transforms ordinary scenes into extraordinary works of art. From the sky, Zimmerman captures landscapes in a way that ground-based photography simply cannot match. This unique viewpoint piques the eye and allows him to showcase the beauty of the world from angles that inspire wonder. Additionally, the fleeting moments of perfect light are often gone in the blink of an eye. With the ability to fly the camera to the right place at the right time, Thomas can seize those magical seconds that would otherwise slip away, resulting in breathtaking images that tell a story only seen from above.

While capturing vivid and colorful scenes presents its own challenges, using a drone has elevated Zimmerman’s skills to new heights—literally and figuratively. He reflects on this

journey, stating, “Initially, I was skeptical about the potential of a smaller, more mobile camera. However, navigating the Kansas wind while mastering drone photography has forced me to adapt and refine my techniques.” This evolution in his approach has allowed him to capture stunning landscapes from unique perspectives that ground-based photography could not achieve.
