Mr. Shawn Henderson of Hays High School announced today that John Weisenborn has been named a Commended Student in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) which conducts the program will be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2025 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2025 competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

John is the son of Greg and Charlene Nichols Weisenborn.

PoPt Gourmet Popcorn's will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Friday with sweet treats and local favorites.

PoPt, 1106 E. 27th St., Suite 2, has served more than 50 gourmet popcorn flavors in Hays since 2014.

Owner Jenna Jacobs stepped up earlier this year after working with the candy shop for three and a half years.

"[The former owner] wanted to go outside the state, and I was looking for something in small business and entrepreneurship. The cards just played right," Jacobs said.

The celebration, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., will offer a 10% discount on all items and free caramel corn, buttery corn and kettle corn.

Tenth-anniversary T-shirts will be given with purchases of $50 or more, and prizes will be awarded through a raffle.

"If people plan on getting a T-shirt or lots of popcorn, it'd be wise to come in early," Jacobs said.

PoPt was on Main Street for two years before moving to its location next to Trio Tap House in 2016.

The candy shop also features a variety of treats, including old-school candy, jelly beans, taffy, soda and gummies.

In addition to its one to 3.5-gallon popcorn tins, PoPt offers a variety of in-house treats, including fudge, peanut brittle, and frosted and roasted nuts.

Jacobs said their popcorn seeds are sourced from McPherson to showcase the treats Kansas has to offer.

"We recently got a new line of pickles out of Buckland. We try to bring Kansas-made items here," she said. "We like to maintain Kansas pride around here."

The candy store has participated in school fundraising efforts, recently completing a fundraiser for Hays High tennis and making regular donations to the community.

"We recently made a big donation to Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, and we donate to the Humane Society all the time," Jacobs said.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, PoPt donated 10% of its January sales to the Humane Society of the High Plains.

Jacobs said she is exploring growing PoPt within Hays but does not intend to leave its home anytime soon.

"I would love to expand, but not necessarily outside of Hays. We'll be here for a while," she said.

PoPt is offering a Christmas promotion with a 10% discount on large orders placed before Nov. 15.&nbsp;Orders can be picked up in-store or shipped.

The store is open: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays

PoPt to celebrate 10th anniversary Friday in Hays

The Hays USD 489 school board approved cost sharing for 13th Street improvements&nbsp;at its meeting on Monday.

The improvements are to accommodate an increase in traffic at the new Hays Middle School and Hays High School site.

The district is constructing a new high school and renovating the current high school into a middle school.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/a6378a72-e89e-43a9-8e6a-c77e0665c595">The project is a reconstruction of 13th between Canterbury Drive and Commerce Parkway.&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;

The street will be widened from Anthony Drive to Tallgrass Drive, with the easternmost end of 13th remaining two lanes to Commerce Parkway.

The project's initial scope included widening 13th from Anthony Drive to Commerce Parkway. However, the project came in over budget.

A multi-use path will be constructed along the north side of the entire project, which will also include pedestrian crossings and right-turn lanes.

Superintendent Ron Wilson said the improvements will help with traffic flow and increase safety.

The downsized project will cost $3.03 million.

USD 489 is responsible for adding two right-turn lanes, pedestrian crossings and upgraded signals at 13th and Canterbury, which will cost $763,000.

The new high school is scheduled to open by August 2025. Work on the renovations at the current high school will start in summer 2025 and take six to eight months to complete.

The Ellis County 4-H Shooting Sports Club is sending nine youth archers, ages 9-18, to the State 4-H Archery competition in Wakarusa, KS on September 21st. The 2024 4-H archery program includes 30 youth participants from Ellis County and five youth from Pawnee County 4-H. The 4-H Shooting Sports program provides an opportunity for caring adults to assist youth in positive youth development.

Want to learn proper and safe ways to shoot an air rifle, shotgun or bow and arrow? Check out the shooting sports project! The project teaches gun safety, hunting practices plus an opportunity to test your skills. If you have an interest in guns and/or hunting this project is a great way to learn. Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports adheres to the National Shooting Sports Policies.

4-H offers a diverse range of projects that engage youth in hands-on learning across various fields. In Animal Science, members can work with species like beef, goats, horses and more, diving into veterinary science as well. The Communication &amp; Expressive Arts projects encourage creativity through performing arts, photography, and visual arts. Consumer &amp; Family Science covers essential life skills such as sewing, nutrition, and interior design. In Natural Resources, youth explore environmental science, geology, and wildlife. Leadership &amp; Personal Development projects foster civic engagement and self-determination. The Plant Sciences focus on entomology, agronomy, and horticulture, while Engineering &amp; Technology includes exciting areas like robotics, renewable energy, and aerospace. With such a broad spectrum of projects, 4-H empowers youth to develop skills, leadership, and a passion for learning.

ROBERTSON: Make 4-H Your Target

Normally I avoid sequels. I don’t want to know what happened after Rhett left Scarlet standing in the door with his famous line echoing in her mind. However, I must write part two to the hedge apple saga. If I don’t, readers could enter the next bug cycle with unfounded hope.

Before I address this fruit’s insect deterrent capabilities, I’ll fill readers in on why I found a million shreds of hedge apple under the big cedar tree. I spent enough time observing out the window that I caught the culprit at work.

My husband told me squirrels had done the deed, but I couldn’t imagine how such a wee creature could wreak such havoc. (Silly me. I lost a sweater and a pair of tennis shoes to a mouse living in a school closet.) He was right. Squirrels love hedge apples.

We put a few more ugly globes out on the porch to tempt the guilty party, and then we watched. It took a while to catch the critter in the act, but I saw one squirrel lift and carry a large hedge apple in its mouth to the cedar. Apparently, another squirrel observed this feat and, inspired, grabbed its own green brain off the porch to lug down the hill.

That explained the movement of hedge apples from one locale to another. Watching longer, I saw the apples shredded. In moments, the squirrels tore their respective orbs into thousands of tiny pieces. As they shredded, they flung, leaving me to think squirrels find only a small portion of this meal edible. Once they found that little chunk, they tossed the waste like confetti.

So much for the mystery of the moved and shredded hedge apples. Now for the truth about hedge apples as insect deterrent. After reading the Internet site selling hedge apples as natural insect deterrent, I placed a number of them around the house in places we find hordes of box elder beetles aka Ellis bugs. (We named them Ellis bugs when a tiny neighbor called the black and orange insects Ellis bugs. Her big brother wore black and orange as an Ellis Railer, so black and orange bugs should logically be Ellis bugs.)

I tucked a hedge apple in my closet and in the coat closet for good measure. My first hint about their lack of suitability as a solution to box elder bugs was the pungent odor that wafted out every time I opened the closet door. However, thinking about inventors like Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, I could not give up too soon.

While I gave those hedge apples every opportunity to send the box elder bugs outside for a breath of fresh air, another infestation occurred in my bedroom closet. Hedge apples are a fruit, right? Fruit flies like fruit, right? Fruit flies really like ripe fruit, right? Right.

We traveled overnight, and when I returned my clothes to my closet, horrors awaited! I’d collected a hedge apple containing fruit fly larvae. Now, I had a closet full of them. Thirty years earlier, this would have been grand when I required them for a biology genetics experiment. This was thirty years too late.

Fortunately, I didn’t pay $1.50 for each hedge apple. Even more fortunate was the fact that only one hedge apple spawned a swarm of fruit flies. Otherwise, I’d have swatted pests for days

Beware of Internet ads. When experimenting, select a small test zone, and prepare for the unexpected. Certainly, Edison and Bell made their own mistakes. In fact, Edison said something along this line, I have not made a thousand mistakes inventing the light bulb. I have merely found a thousand ways not to make a light bulb. Ellis Co. Sheriff warns of car-selling scam

ELLIS — Congratulations to King and Queen, Kamden Keller and Natalee North, who were crowned at our football game on Friday, September 20. 

  Ellis High School had a fabulous week celebrating homecoming!  The class of 2025, the senior class, were the overall spirit winners.  The junior class won best float featuring Candy Land. 

 The seniors and juniors continued their winning streak by defeating the faculty and staff in volleyball.

Ellis High School congratulates 2024 homecoming royalty 

A man was arrested in Hays on Sept. 21 for aggravated battery after reportedly choking another man until he lost consciousness.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said that 19-year-old Aiden Amrein was arrested and booked into the Ellis County Jail following an altercation with another man.

Scheibler said Amrein got on the back of the alleged victim while they were on the ground and placed him in a chokehold until the victim lost consciousness.

Video footage of the fight shows Amrein repeatedly striking the unconscious man in the head. EMS responded to the scene and treated the victim, who had swelling on one side of his face and around his left eye.

Amrein fled the scene when police arrived but was later apprehended.

Hays man arrested for battery after choking victim

The Hays USD 489 school board voted to put the Lincoln Elementary School building up for sale at its meeting on Monday.

The closure is part of $145 million in bond projects. A new high school is being built. The middle school will move into the remodeled high school. The current middle school will be renovated into a new elementary school.

In addition to closing Lincoln, Rockwell Administration Center will be closed and likely sold. Wilson Elementary School will be closed as a school, and the administrative offices will likely be moved into that building.

Superintendent Ron Wilson said he has had no serious conversations with potential buyers, but several people have asked when the building might be available for sale.

An Overland Park Developer purchased the former Washington Elementary School and renovated that building into apartments.

The playground equipment at the school would likely be moved to another district school.

The district has to give the state the opportunity to purchase the property per state statute. The bidding process would be contingent on the Legislature's approval of the sale.

Board member Allen Park said he wanted to look at other uses for the building before it is sold.

He suggested the two district programs leasing space, the WeKan Center and virtual school, could move into that building.&nbsp;

Board member Jayme Goetz said that through the bond process, the district had already determined that renovating Lincoln and continuing to use it as a school would be too costly.

Although Lincoln could be renovated into housing or for other purposes, board member Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp said those uses fall outside the school district's mission.

Board members Derek Yarmer and Park voted against the motion to sell the school.

their extraordinary support of TMP-Marian throughout the years. Tim Werth, a
1988 graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian and earning a finance degree from
Emporia State University in 1992, is the founding partner of Werth Wealth
Management and has been recognized nationally by Barron’s and Forbes. He has
served on numerous boards, including the TMP-M Endowment Board and the Salina
Diocese Finance Council. Tim played a key role in combining the middle school
with the high school and starting the Saint Thomas More Society. Sandee Werth,
a 1985 graduate of Victoria High School, earned her degree in elementary
education from Fort Hays State University. She taught at St. Joseph’s and Holy
Family Elementary, served on the Holy Family Elementary Advisory Council, and
is a founding member of Women Who Lead. Together, Tim and Sandee have two sons,
Collin and Tanner, both of whom attended Catholic schools. They have been
generous supporters of Catholic education and their community, serving as
co-chairs for the TMP-MHS Ace Auction and contributing their time and resources
to their church and beyond.

Allen have been dedicated supporters of TMP-Marian and the Hays community.
Nolan, born in Brewster, KS, served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1973-1977
and spent 35 years as a diesel mechanic, retiring from I-70 Truck Repair in
2021. Geralyn, raised near Grainfield, KS, earned a BS in Mathematics and
Computer Science from FHSU in 1981 and worked at FHSU until her retirement in
2019. Married in 1981, they raised four children, all graduates of TMP-M:
Matthew - 2001, Daniel - 2003, Sara - 2006, and Andrew - 2010. The Allens
actively supported their children’s education, sports, and fine arts
activities, from volunteering at events to participating in the Fine Arts
Booster Club and the ACE Auction. They have also been devoted members of St.
Nicholas of Myra Parish since 1983, where they serve in various ministries,
including Eucharistic Ministry, music ministry, and delivering Meals on Wheels.
Their dedication to both TMP-M and the community has left a lasting impact.

in Olmitz, Kansas, within the Diocese of Dodge City. He was baptized at St.
Ann’s Parish, Olmitz, on May 19, 1957, and confirmed on April 4, 1965. His
lifelong commitment to faith led him to join the Capuchin Order, where he made
his first profession in Victoria, Kansas, on August 18, 1980, and final
profession on August 16, 1983. A 1975 graduate of Thomas More Prep, Brother
Mark's dedication to service extended across the globe. He taught at Thomas
More Prep-Marian from 1984 to 1988, serving as a campus minister and faculty
member. His devotion to his vocation saw him take on numerous roles within the
Capuchin Order, including General Definitor and Provincial Minister. His
travels and service reached far beyond the United States, impacting communities
across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Brother Mark’s life has been one
of unwavering commitment to faith, education, and global service, making an
indelible mark on the church, the school, and the wider Capuchin community. We

Ellis High School volleyball Seniors Night is Thursday

The city commission will vote on funding mechanisms for new business and housing developments in Hays at its meeting on Thursday.&nbsp;

Commissioners will also consider awarding a bid for the reconstruction of East 13th Street from Canterbury Drive to Commerce Parkway.

Two of the new housing developments are in the downtown area.

An ordinance establishing a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) and a development plan for housing and public facilities at 10th and Walnut will be considered. A public hearing will precede the ordinance vote.&nbsp;

Hays developer Michael Graham Rentals is proposing to build 48 apartments on the site of the former railroad depot parking lot in downtown Hays.

The district is expected to generate about $1.1 million of revenue during its maximum 25-year term. This revenue would be used to reimburse the developer for an estimated $692,000 in RHID-eligible project costs on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded the city a $300,000 Commercial Rehabilitation Community Development Block Grant on behalf of Chestnut Suites&nbsp;at 1108 N. Main and Hays developer Adam Pray.

The former Hays State Bank building, which will be used for the $3.2 million project, was constructed in 1965 and has been vacant for 40 years.

Pray plans to redevelop the building into a new luxury short-term rental Airbnb called Chestnut Suites with 24 to 26 rooms. The rooms will be designed similar to those of traditional hotels.

The city is poised to approve&nbsp;Community Development Block Grant grant agreements between Hays and the state commerce department and between Hays and Chestnut Suites, along with a repayment agreement with the developer.

Commissioners will also discuss funding for the 27th and Main Street development project. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/838fe958-24ab-4afe-a463-4daa732a1c4f">Astra Bank</a> is relocating and building a new facility on that site.

&nbsp;The city will pay 100% of the costs to construct the stormwater management infrastructure at the south end of the property and 50% of the costs to extend 26th Street through the development.

The $89,000 for the stormwater retention infrastructure will come from the stormwater reserve funds, and the city's 50% share of $205,000 for the street will come from the city's capital reserve cash funds.

Access to the new bank will be from 26th Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The city of Hays has purchased the existing Astra Bank building, 1100 Fort, to redevelop it as a new police station and municipal court facility.

Commissioners will also consider authorizing a $3 million agreement with APAC-Kansas, Hays, for construction services related to the city and school improvements along the East 13th Street corridor from Canterbury Drive to Commerce Parkway.

The reconstruction project is to be funded from commission capital reserves, Ellis County reimbursement, a cost-share grant with the Kansas Department of Transportation, and reimbursement from USD 489 in the amount of $763,449 for their portion of the project.&nbsp;

The city’s portion of the project includes reconstructing the road from Anthony Drive to Commerce Parkway, including widening sections of East 13th Street from two to three lanes, installation of a multi-use path along the north side of the entire project and a mill and overlay of the complete roadway.&nbsp;

A public hearing will precede the ordinance vote.&nbsp;Hays developer Michael Graham Rentals is proposing to build 48 apartments on the site of the former railroad depot parking lot in downtown Hays.The district is expected to generate about $1.1 million of revenue during its maximum 25-year term. This revenue would be used to reimburse the developer for an estimated $692,000 in RHID-eligible project costs on a pay-as-you-go basis.<figure>

 </figure>The Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded the city a $300,000 Commercial Rehabilitation Community Development Block Grant on behalf of Chestnut Suites&nbsp;at 1108 N. Main and Hays developer Adam Pray.The former Hays State Bank building, which will be used for the $3.2 million project, was constructed in 1965 and has been vacant for 40 years.Pray plans to redevelop the building into a new luxury short-term rental Airbnb called Chestnut Suites with 24 to 26 rooms. The rooms will be designed similar to those of traditional hotels.The city is poised to approve&nbsp;Community Development Block Grant grant agreements between Hays and the state commerce department and between Hays and Chestnut Suites, along with a repayment agreement with the developer.<figure>

Hays City Commission to vote on funding for business, development projects

After decades of shaping local news in Hays and beyond, News Reporter Becky Kiser will sign off for the final time at the end of Sept.

Kiser's passion for journalism began in the fourth grade when she wrote news for her parents’ newspaper company in Protection.

&nbsp;"It was a little weekly newspaper that included the highlights for the schools that week. I remember writing a column about the class chameleon, Gilligan," she said.

Kiser was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, and later moved to Dodge City, where she graduated from Dodge City Senior High School and Dodge City Community College. She became involved in an award-winning radio broadcasting program and worked as a stringer for a local radio station, KEDD.

After community college, Kiser continued her education at Fort Hays State University, earning a bachelor's and master's in communications.&nbsp;

She started her professional career at KAYS Radio and TV in Hays in 1981 before moving in 1987 to Portales, New Mexico, where she led college students in a nightly local news program on the PBS station.

"I started at KAYS as the TV weather girl and then made my way to reporter and news anchor. I also produced and anchored radio newscasts," she said. "I then went to work at Eastern New Mexico University and was a teacher and advisor for the school's PBS television station, KENW."

After her time in New Mexico, Kiser relocated to Amarillo, Texas, in1989, joining ABC affiliate KVII as the medical reporter and co-anchor for the prime time 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.

While in Texas, Kiser said the most well-known person she interviewed was Barbara Bush, wife of former President George H. W. Bush.

"She was on a media tour for her dog who wrote a book. It was unusual to promote White House pets like that but it was in his name and it was really sweet," Kiser said.

Kiser returned to Hays in 1991 after KAYS-TV was sold and rebranded as KBSH, continuing to work in TV news. She later returned to&nbsp;Fort Hays State University as a teacher of radio and TV classes.&nbsp;

After seven years of teaching, Kiser launched a local cable TV news show in 1994 called 'The Local Edition' for KMA production company on Hays Cable TV. The program migrated to Eagle Community Television, where it became known as 'Street Beat,' and eventually became Hays Post.&nbsp;

"That was a learning curve for me because it was online. I was going from changing writing styles from broadcast to a print writing style," Kiser said.

Hays Post transitioned into an online news platform, where Kiser hosted radio shows on KAYS and provided news updates in both the mornings and evenings.

Kiser also watched the community's growth through her regular coverage of the Hays city commission meetings on Thursdays.

"I love Hays. I'm excited about the growth we've seen in the last few years, both population and business-wise. It says a lot about the community and the region and I hope to see it continue," she said.

After more than four decades in journalism, Kiser witnessed major changes in the media including technology, shifts in the on-screen presentation of news anchors and evolving reporting standards.&nbsp;

Kiser said she appreciates the colleagues she’s worked with throughout her career, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in the newsroom.

As her retirement approaches, Kiser said she feels excited and anxious but will stay involved in the community while enjoying well-deserved relaxation.

She said her career was a journey of engaging with everyday people to well-known figures, never knowing what each day would bring.

"It's been a wonderful experience. I look forward to coming to work every day because I like what I do and not everybody gets to say that about their job," Kiser said.

As the population of those 65 and older grows, the proportion of Americans with dementia will rise. Currently, it is estimated that 6.9 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s dementia. Close family and friends tend to provide caregiving services for loved ones with the disease, and it is no easy task. In fact, those caring for a person with dementia provide extensive assistance including personal care, increased supervision, and response to behavioral symptoms.

This is why respite care, or rest for the caregiver, is vital. If you or someone you know could benefit from respite care, look to community resources for assistance.

A Different Mindset Association, located in Hays, Kansas, aims to support caregivers, provide education, network resources, and promote awareness about dementia. The group hosts caregiver support group meetings in person and via Zoom. They also provide a monthly mobile respite care service and a social engagement day program for those with dementia.

Mobile respite, “On the Road Again,” occurs the first Tuesday of every month at the Hays Senior Center. Caregivers have the opportunity to drop loved ones off to enjoy lunch, field trips, community service opportunities, and indoor and outdoor experiences.

“Our Club,” is a day program from 11 am- 3:30 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Participants can enjoy lunch, art, drama, music, intergenerational activities, community service, and animal friends at the Hays Senior Center.

Through these programs, A Different Mindset Association hopes to relieve caregivers and enrich the lives of those with dementia through social connections, recreation, and a newfound purpose.

Everyone needs a break to rest and recharge. Respite care can provide temporary relief from caregiving, while the person with dementia continues to receive care in a safe environment. Using respite services can strengthen your ability to provide the best care possible.

On Saturday, October 12th, the class will paint “Cauldron Bubble,” and on Sunday, October 13th, “Fall Sunset.” Classes are held in the Logan Youth Center, 402 W Church Street, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Beginner friendly, participants will be guided step-by-step to complete a painting each day just like Bob did on TV. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels. Young and old alike (13 and older) will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes.

Hansen Museum to offer Joy of Painting class

A juvenile runaway from Ohio was located in a Hays apartment following a disturbance call to the police.

Hays Police Department Chief Don Scheibler said a call made on Sept. 17 from someone living in the apartment led to the discovery of the juvenile.

"This was a disturbance call initially but when officers got there, they had a runaway which had been found," he said.

The caller reported that she was living with a runaway from Ohio.

The juvenile was identified and taken into custody to be returned to Ohio.Nineteen-year-old suspect Logan Joseph Bryan Douglass was arrested for alleged child misconduct related to sheltering or concealing a runaway.Twenty-year-old Kiersten Angel Satterfield was also arrested for aggravated interference contributing to child misconduct.Both Hays residents were arrested and booked into the Ellis County Jail.
