ELLSWORTH – Kansas State University extension specialists and agricultural agents and local conservation district representatives will host a field day focused on controlling woody encroachment and other brush management techniques.

This free event, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on November 6, will offer expert advice to the public about how to use chemical and mechanical treatments to combat the spread of invasive trees and brush. It will be hosted at the Robin Kohls Ranch, and a free lunch will be provided to participants.

Organizers say managing the spread of trees on grassland is essential.

“We know that Kansas is losing a lot of acres of grassland and pasture to the spread of trees and other brush,” said Stacie Minson, K-State Research and Extension watershed specialist. “The economic loss for landowners and producers means learning these key land management strategies will be really beneficial now, and into the future.”

The program will include other topics as well, including the use of alternative watering systems for livestock, winter cow nutrition, and other water quality concerns. Minson said that this is especially relevant, as the day’s discussion will help the public learn more about how to improve water quality in Kanopolis Reservoir, which is the oldest reservoir in the state of Kansas.

The field day is sponsored by Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds, Midway Extension District, Ellsworth County Conservation District and Natural Resource Conservation Service in Ellsworth. Speakers from K-State will include experts on soil science, cropping systems, and watershed management.

BOOR: K-State experts host field day about brush management

Many people, for a variety of reasons, such as arthritis or other painful conditions, don’t participate in regular physical activity, despite the health benefits it would offer.

The Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease program was developed to help people with or without arthritis form walking groups whose goals are safety and success. The program’s three major objectives are to provide participants with

· Education about successful physical activity for people with arthritis

· Opportunity to begin and develop an ongoing aerobic fitness program

Walk with Ease’s information and strategies are based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change, and arthritis management.

Groups meet for 6 weeks, three times per week. Each session lasts about one hour. The length of each session depends on how long your group decides to walk. At the start, some people may only be able to walk 5 to 15 minutes, but the program will help you gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of walking, three times a week. The program can be modified to meet the interests and needs of participants, who walk at their own pace.

Each session begins with a brief discussion of a topic important to successful walking or arthritis management. After the discussion the group will warm up, stretch, walk, cool down, and stretch one last time. Walking with a group is fun and groups often spend additional time socializing.

The Walk with Ease program is designed for people with arthritis- young and old, male and female, fit and not-so-fit. It is also suitable for people without arthritis who would like to begin a regular walking program to gain the benefits of regular aerobic exercise.

If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you can probably participate successfully, and the program can be modified to meet your needs.

If you want to participate but have concerns about your health, consult your health care practitioner before you begin.

To participate in the course, you complete and return an application. Please contact the Cottonwood Extension Office at 785-628-9430 or email moniquek@ksu.edu or you can stop by the office at 601 Main St. to fill out the application. The cost is $15 to participate. You receive a book with the class. Classes will meet most Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 9:30am at Hays Recreation Center gyms. Classes begin November 4, 2024 and ends on December 13, 2024.

In my snail mail box yesterday I found a flyer from KansasUnited.org. I googled them and learned they are affiliated with the ACLU. I applaud their efforts to provide information on candidates running for office. Kansas has a long list and considering the effort it takes to become an informed voter it was disappointing to see the list only addressed the Ellis County Clerk position, leaving the impression this was a political ad. That was disappointing from an organization dedicated to providing fair and unbiased voting information. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Each candidate was asked to respond to the following

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To put polling places in locations convenient for all eligible Ellis County citizens?

2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That Ellis County polling locations are accessible to and meet the needs of residents with disabilities and the elderly?

3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To extend the early voting period in Ellis County?

The candidate responded yes; the incumbent did not respond. Perhaps because these issues are already covered in her oath for office.

1. No address in the city of Hays is located more than 2 miles from the assigned polling location.

2. By law, polling locations must provide handicap assess.&nbsp; All Hays polling locations have adequate parking located near the entrance of the poll. All entrances have handicap ramps and personnel are available to assist the elderly.

3. Kansas law dictates early voting access.&nbsp; In Ellis County early voting begins October 16 with mail in ballot mailing. In person early voting is from October 28 – November 1, between the hours of 8am and 4pm. November 4th&nbsp;hours are 8am to 12 pm.&nbsp; Voting takes place at the Ellis County Administrative Center, 718 Main Street.

I am not acquainted with Laura Allen and have no knowledge of her work history or experience in civil service.&nbsp; I have worked with Bobbie Dreiling as a poll judge for several local, state and national elections.&nbsp; She is a professional; knowledgeable, experienced, efficient, and dedicated to running an election that gives every registered Ellis County voter the opportunity to vote.&nbsp;

The time and effort in producing this flyer would have better served the people of Kansas with a list of candidates running for office and a link to information on their history and positions on important issues, ending with a GET OUT AND VOTE message. It is our right, it is our privilege, and it is our responsibility. Our democracy depends on it.

At breakfast this morning, a friend remarked about the number of hawks he recently saw covering a newly-cut soybean field. Ah, I thought, it’s time for the annual raptor migration through Kansas to begin.

I love watching hawks hunt and I love observing how they’ve learned to interact with farm equipment as it rolls across fields and stirs up rodents and small birds that scurry about and often end up as a snack for the hawk. Our raised deer blind overlooks a grass waterway that grows up in giant sunflowers and pigweed by summer’s end, becoming a nice secure travel way for deer, but making them hard to spot during hunting season. I try to mow that area every fall, and every year as I mow the last swath of thick weedy cover, fat field mice scatter everywhere and I think to myself “Man, could the hawks be feasting here!” A few years back I happened by a nearby field of soybeans being cut. What caught my eye was the enormous number of hawks all around the field, just as exactly as my friend had described; I counted to thirty-some then lost count. I rolled into the field and talked with one of the combine drivers about the hawks. He said they had suddenly appeared as if from nowhere when they started cutting and had been there since. The soybean plants were extra tall and thick that year, and as they ripened and dropped their foliage, it left several inches of duff covering the ground between the rows; perfect cover for field mice and rats looking for warm concealment. As the combines lumbered through the field, they forced all those rodents from their cozy quarters and the hawks were feasting. 

Each year about this time, we begin to see an extraordinary number of hawks of all varieties as they migrate south toward warmer climates. The extent of our Kansas winter will largely determine whether they stay here for a spell or move on south, and our milder-than-normal winters of late have been a huge draw to migrating hawks. The hawks I observed hunting the soybean stubble field that year, and the ones my friend observed lately were obviously migrants that were getting a good meal whether they stayed or not. The vast acreages of new wheat fields will be a huge draw too, as mice, voles and insects become vulnerable to the hawk’s keen eyes in the short new wheat. Another plus is the type of air currents and thermals that blow through the plains states. North winds coming down from Canada are utilized by all types of hawks, saving them precious energy by being able to soar. So in summary, the mild winters, the open fields and the beneficial wind currents all make Kansas a popular place to see hawks of many varieties this time of year.

One common hawk we see here every winter is the Northern Harrier. They are large hawks with wide white bands across their broad square tails and are often seen gliding effortlessly mere feet above CRP fields and pastures. We also get an influx of Red Tails from northern states as they come here for our milder winters. Swainson Hawks on their way to Argentina stop in Kansas by the thousands. Rough-Legged Hawks migrate from Canada to the western US, including Kansas. Ferruginous Hawks may be seen here as they travel from Western Kansas to parts of the South Eastern US and to Florida. All these truly make for a kaleidoscope of raptors in our Kansas sky.

This article wouldn’t be complete without emphasizing the important role raptors play in our agricultural environment. Raptors get blamed for everything from low pheasant and quail populations to stealing chickens and everything in between. Yes, we all know that hawks and especially owls will steal a chicken or two given the chance, but in actuality, hawks prey on mice, rats, snakes and possums that eat quail and pheasant eggs and newly hatched young. (FYI, feral and stray cats are the worst predators alive for killing young game birds and song birds.) Owls are huge rat and mice hunters and also eat skunks that carry rabies. If not for these raptors in our midst, rodent populations would devastate farmer’s crops and our environment as a whole. And for the record, killing a raptor of any kind is illegal in Kansas!

You can’t go afield this time of year without spotting hawks silently hunting low over patches of CRP and milo stalks, waiting patiently atop power poles for prey to reveal themselves or putting on shows of acrobatic excellence as they soar above us on the fall breezes. I once overheard a raptor rehabilitator tell someone “We as humans have encroached on them, so the least we can do is let them live with us.” Continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors!

Exploring Kansas Outdoors: Here come the hawks

The American Democracy Project (ADP) at Fort Hays State University has shared research showing increased voter registration at Kansas universities with polling locations on campus. Unfortunately, FHSU does not have a polling location on campus, despite years of advocating for one. That same research reveals the embarrassing fact that FHSU was the Regents school with the lowest voting rate in 2020. Surely, those two facts are related, and surely, it is time to make a change.

The current county clerk, Bobbi Dreiling has resisted efforts to establish a polling place on campus. When we discuss having a polling place on campus, the clerk asserts that the current location is not far for the college students to travel. As a student who lives on campus, it would take me (Samuel) approximately forty minutes to walk to the nearest polling location, Messiah Lutheran, and then another forty minutes to return to campus. This does not include any possible inclement weather we might have on election day, which may delay travel time. Nor does it take into consideration the class and work time that would be taken up by this journey.

We understand that students would not be the only population voting at a campus polling location. However, we believe that the high concentration of students in this area–and the potential for increased registrations–warrants the need for a polling place on campus. Campus and community groups have been working to bring a polling place to campus since at least 2018, and have met every challenge. Each new obstacle that the clerk invents has been solved by the dedicated students who have been working on this project for years:

● Finding an area that is big enough and ADA compliant: Cunningham Hall is large enough and is fully ADA compliant.

● Not enough parking (keep in mind that the previous polling location at 601 Main had fewer than 20 parking spots): Cunningham Hall has an abundance of parking spots, and the University Police have been supportive of efforts to bring a polling place to campus and would help with traffic flow issues.

● Location availability for Election Day and Special Elections: Coaches and building managers have agreed that the polling place would have priority, and that they would not schedule an event for election days.

A related issue is the absence of any attempt by the county clerk to engage FHSU students in the election process via education, awareness, and voter registration. At Monday’s County Clerk Forum, the Incumbent, Bobbi Dreiling, commented that she had not heard from students at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) or the American

Democracy Project (ADP), and therefore had not been active in voter education or registration on campus. At FHSU, anyone is welcome to have a table at the FHSU Back to School Picnic (former Clerk Maskus and Treasurer Peifer had a booth at the 2016 Picnic - Facebook), request a space to give a talk, or have a table in the Memorial Union.

The impetus to involve the campus community in the voting process should not lie with student groups alone. However, this semester, at least five student organizations hosted tables in the Union to help students get registered, check their registration, and request a mail-in ballot from Ellis County (or the Kansas county where they are registered). The clerk herself should be more proactive in her approach to community outreach and should have done more during a presidential election year, when more people are likely to be engaged in this democratic process.

I (Samuel), a student and employee at FHSU, also had the opportunity to speak to two sociology classes on campus about the importance of voting, getting registered, and the laws regarding elections in Kansas. We do not see any reason why the current clerk would not have taken the opportunity to reach out to students in this way as well. Clerk Dreiling says she has an open-door policy, but apparently, the door only works one way, where citizens have to come to her instead of being met where they are.

When we take a closer look at the statistics presented by Mrs. Dreling during the forum, we see a concerning reality: Out of the total 1,650 students residing on the FHSU campus, only 69 are registered to vote in Ellis County. This astonishingly low figure represents a mere 4% of the student population living on campus. We believe this situation highlights a significant missed opportunity for civic engagement with the campus community.

One can only imagine how enjoyable it must be for her to visit elementary schools and run mock elections with the young students, helping to instill in them a sense of civic duty and participation. However, the lack of follow-through with similar efforts directed toward college students at FHSU is a failure of the office. These college students are at a pivotal time in their lives when understanding and participating in real elections could greatly impact their commitment to this community and their future as engaged citizens.

Real elections influence everything from local policies to funding for educational programs, and yet, with such a small percentage of students registered to vote, it seems that their voices are not being heard. It would be beneficial for the county clerk to come to FHSU and engage students in discussions about the voting process, the importance of their participation, and the real-world consequences of their choices at the polls.

Creating opportunities for dialogue and education around these topics could inspire more students to register and vote, ultimately strengthening our democracy and enhancing community involvement.

Bobbi Dreiling has shown us time and again that she is not a candidate who supports this vision for Ellis County’s future. It is time to vote for a candidate who will work with and for all citizens. It is time to vote for Laura Allen!

 </figure>The current county clerk, Bobbi Dreiling has resisted efforts to establish a polling place on campus. When we discuss having a polling place on campus, the clerk asserts that the current location is not far for the college students to travel. As a student who lives on campus, it would take me (Samuel) approximately forty minutes to walk to the nearest polling location, Messiah Lutheran, and then another forty minutes to return to campus. This does not include any possible inclement weather we might have on election day, which may delay travel time. Nor does it take into consideration the class and work time that would be taken up by this journey.We understand that students would not be the only population voting at a campus polling location. However, we believe that the high concentration of students in this area–and the potential for increased registrations–warrants the need for a polling place on campus. Campus and community groups have been working to bring a polling place to campus since at least 2018, and have met every challenge. Each new obstacle that the clerk invents has been solved by the dedicated students who have been working on this project for years:● Finding an area that is big enough and ADA compliant: Cunningham Hall is large enough and is fully ADA compliant.● Not enough parking (keep in mind that the previous polling location at 601 Main had fewer than 20 parking spots): Cunningham Hall has an abundance of parking spots, and the University Police have been supportive of efforts to bring a polling place to campus and would help with traffic flow issues.● Location availability for Election Day and Special Elections: Coaches and building managers have agreed that the polling place would have priority, and that they would not schedule an event for election days.A related issue is the absence of any attempt by the county clerk to engage FHSU students in the election process via education, awareness, and voter registration. At Monday’s County Clerk Forum, the Incumbent, Bobbi Dreiling, commented that she had not heard from students at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) or the AmericanDemocracy Project (ADP), and therefore had not been active in voter education or registration on campus. At FHSU, anyone is welcome to have a table at the FHSU Back to School Picnic (former Clerk Maskus and Treasurer Peifer had a booth at the 2016 Picnic - Facebook), request a space to give a talk, or have a table in the Memorial Union.The impetus to involve the campus community in the voting process should not lie with student groups alone. However, this semester, at least five student organizations hosted tables in the Union to help students get registered, check their registration, and request a mail-in ballot from Ellis County (or the Kansas county where they are registered). The clerk herself should be more proactive in her approach to community outreach and should have done more during a presidential election year, when more people are likely to be engaged in this democratic process.I (Samuel), a student and employee at FHSU, also had the opportunity to speak to two sociology classes on campus about the importance of voting, getting registered, and the laws regarding elections in Kansas. We do not see any reason why the current clerk would not have taken the opportunity to reach out to students in this way as well. Clerk Dreiling says she has an open-door policy, but apparently, the door only works one way, where citizens have to come to her instead of being met where they are.When we take a closer look at the statistics presented by Mrs. Dreling during the forum, we see a concerning reality: Out of the total 1,650 students residing on the FHSU campus, only 69 are registered to vote in Ellis County. This astonishingly low figure represents a mere 4% of the student population living on campus. We believe this situation highlights a significant missed opportunity for civic engagement with the campus community.One can only imagine how enjoyable it must be for her to visit elementary schools and run mock elections with the young students, helping to instill in them a sense of civic duty and participation. However, the lack of follow-through with similar efforts directed toward college students at FHSU is a failure of the office. These college students are at a pivotal time in their lives when understanding and participating in real elections could greatly impact their commitment to this community and their future as engaged citizens.Real elections influence everything from local policies to funding for educational programs, and yet, with such a small percentage of students registered to vote, it seems that their voices are not being heard. It would be beneficial for the county clerk to come to FHSU and engage students in discussions about the voting process, the importance of their participation, and the real-world consequences of their choices at the polls.Creating opportunities for dialogue and education around these topics could inspire more students to register and vote, ultimately strengthening our democracy and enhancing community involvement.Bobbi Dreiling has shown us time and again that she is not a candidate who supports this vision for Ellis County’s future. It is time to vote for a candidate who will work with and for all citizens. More recently, former President Trump made alarming comments about “enemies within” that hint at the use of military force against his political opponents, while Vice President Harris is struggling with a reticence among men of color to vote for her. Despite all this, the election itself may come down to a far more traditional, pocketbook issue.

First is the fact that controlling interest rates does not return prices to pre-inflationary levels.&nbsp; Instead, Fed policy has slowed the&nbsp;increase&nbsp;in prices, causing them to stabilize at a point that is 21.4% more expensive than before February 2020.&nbsp; The last time Americans experienced high inflation was in the 1970s. Many older Americans have forgotten, while many younger Americans were not around to experience it.&nbsp; Should the Fed keep going and fight inflation even harder– perhaps even starting a cycle of deflation?&nbsp; If they did, the result could be traumatic.&nbsp; When the Fed finally&nbsp;<a href="https://www.federalreservehistory.org/essays/great-inflation">brought inflation to heel in the early 1980s</a>, interest rates were far higher than they are now, unemployment was in the double digits, and the<a href="https://www.iowapbs.org/iowapathways/mypath/2422/farm-crisis-1980s">&nbsp;farm economy was absolutely devastated</a>.&nbsp; By contrast,<a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS14000024">&nbsp;today’s unemployment rates</a>&nbsp;are historically low.

Americans are also, specifically concerned about housing.&nbsp; Post-pandemic&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/insights/articles/us-house-prices-are-forecast-to-rise-more-than-4-percent-next-year">demand for housing is surging</a>, but supply is not keeping up. Loosening up building restrictions and zoning codes seem like good answers, but the American system of government throws up a roadblock:&nbsp; state laws– including here in Kansas– delegate most of these regulations to local governments, creating a patchwork of codes and zoning laws that builders and rehabbers must navigate in order to create and rehabilitate more housing.&nbsp; The recent&nbsp;<a href="https://johnsoncountypost.com/2023/10/05/prairie-village-housing-timeline-214778/">rejection of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Prairie Village</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/lenexa-city-council-votes-down-controversial-proposal-for-homeless-shelter-in-city">denial of rezoning for a homeless shelter in Lenexa</a>, are both examples of the Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) politics that keeps housing choices limited.&nbsp; In addition, when developers do move in, they often prefer to build upscale apartments or large, single-family units in exclusive neighborhoods where the profit margin is greatest, doing little to relieve the shortage of&nbsp;affordable&nbsp;homes.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<a href="https://immigrationforum.org/article/immigrant-construction-workers-in-the-united-states/">current anti-immigration political climate also contributes to the problem</a>&nbsp;by threatening to limit the number of workers in the construction industry.&nbsp; If Trump is elected and proceeds with plans for mass deportations, the problem will only worsen.&nbsp; Of course, immigrants need homes, too, but research shows that they contribute far more to&nbsp;lowering&nbsp;the cost of housing by working in construction, than they contribute to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jd-vance-debate-immigration-housing-prices-real-estate-federal-reserve/#:~:text=Still%2C%20there%20is%20some%20evidence,but%20although%20a%20small%20one.">raising it through increased demand.</a>&nbsp;

INSIGHT KANSAS: What is Really Going On With Inflation?

Cool-season forages require annual fertilization for optimum production. Fall is a good time to plan on fertilizing cool-season improved pasture or hayfields of perennial grasses such as smooth brome. Particular attention must be paid to nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and pH. Ideally a soil sample should be taken before-hand to know how much of each nutrient you need. If you need information on how to take correct soil samples for bromegrass contact your local Extension Office. We have soil probes you can check out to do it as well.

Balanced fertility is essential. For example, adding nitrogen will not produce optimum yields if phosphorus is low. Soils low in phosphate limit plant and root growth. Fertilizer should be applied by broadcasting in the fall or before spring growth begins.

Nitrogen Source - nitrogen management is critical for optimum smooth brome production. Several nitrogen sources are available—liquid nitrogen solutions, urea, ammonium nitrate, and anhydrous ammonia. Anhydrous ammonia is not extensively used on permanent pastures because application is difficult. Nitrogen source research generally has shown little difference among sources under most conditions. When urea fertilizers—including liquid nitrogen—are applied to moist soils covered with grass residue, an enzyme called urease can break down the urea to ammonia, which is lost to the air. This can occur fairly rapidly when moist conditions are followed by warm temperatures, and rapid drying occurs without rain to move the urea into the soil. If urea is applied from November through February, volatilization loss should be minimal.

Application Timing - when brome is grazed or hayed in the fall, the yearly nitrogen application should be split. If adequate soil moisture is available for good growth in late August and early September, apply all phosphorus and potassium indicated by a soil test plus half of the nitrogen recommended per acre. Then before the soil freezes in November or December, apply the remainder of the nitrogen recommended for haying or grazing. Split or late fall applications generally initiate earlier green-up in the spring.

If soil moisture is limited, apply all nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium before the soil freezes in November or December. To minimize loss, do not apply fertilizer to frozen soil.

Twice I served as the Clerk for Ellis Township. I worked with her to save money for the county by consolidating the number of townships. This took a considerable amount of time but the savings warranted taking this action.

Prior to any election the machines are brought out and testing of the count is done to be sure everything is working properly. For many years I was a viewer to this process representing the Republican Party. I can attest that her and her staff were extremely professional in the process. They never rushed or took shortcuts.

Former Public Works director endorses County Clerk reelection

Autumn is my favorite season for many reasons. After a long, hot, summer of pulling weeds, watering gardens, and picking and processing harvests, it’s nice to kick back and enjoy what remains of blooms and fruits. Lazy buzzing bees and floating butterflies sipping end of season nectar add music and dance to the ambience. More than anything is the knowledge that brilliant orange, yellow, and scarlet leaves will soon fall and with each plop to earth remind me my days are numbered as well. Such knowledge adds urgency to memory making and powerful appreciation for here and now.

Last weekend was a full-on face plant into such emotion. For 35 years, our family has joined friends for an annual wild game feed at Cedar Bluff Lake. Place is important. It gained importance as the site of my parents first dates back in the 50s. Decades later it was my husband’s summer office where he protected Kansas resources and saw people at their very best as they enjoyed nature’s bounty and occasionally at their worst when drownings and accidents occurred. Our family swam, fished, and rock hunted at this largest body of water in northwest Kansas. I’ve explored its history and imagined Fremont camping along the Smoky Hill River near what is today Page Creek. Adding these intense reflections to the fact our family is shrinking—grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins have passed--makes gatherings at this familiar site tug heartstrings even more.

These wild game feeds play a critical role in treasured reminiscences. We’ve watched dating individuals evolve into long-married couples. We’ve seen one another’s children grow from infants to parents themselves. Now we enjoy laughter and antics of grandkids playing in the same spots their parents did. Over time, we’ve observed one another’s cooking skills refine and develop to the point some have become gourmet cooks. One miracle worker makes duck and twice-baked deer steak melt in our mouths. Another created fish tacos paired with fresh from the garden pico de gallo that rank among the best I’ve eaten. Who can resist bacon wrapped dove breasts? After a long, hot, summer of pulling weeds, watering gardens, and picking and processing harvests, it’s nice to kick back and enjoy what remains of blooms and fruits. Lazy buzzing bees and floating butterflies sipping end of season nectar add music and dance to the ambience. More than anything is the knowledge that brilliant orange, yellow, and scarlet leaves will soon fall and with each plop to earth remind me my days are numbered as well. Such knowledge adds urgency to memory making and powerful appreciation for here and now.Last weekend was a full-on face plant into such emotion. For 35 years, our family has joined friends for an annual wild game feed at Cedar Bluff Lake. Place is important. It gained importance as the site of my parents first dates back in the 50s. Decades later it was my husband’s summer office where he protected Kansas resources and saw people at their very best as they enjoyed nature’s bounty and occasionally at their worst when drownings and accidents occurred. Our family swam, fished, and rock hunted at this largest body of water in northwest Kansas. I’ve explored its history and imagined Fremont camping along the Smoky Hill River near what is today Page Creek. Adding these intense reflections to the fact our family is shrinking—grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins have passed--makes gatherings at this familiar site tug heartstrings even more.These wild game feeds play a critical role in treasured reminiscences. We’ve watched dating individuals evolve into long-married couples. We’ve seen one another’s children grow from infants to parents themselves. Now we enjoy laughter and antics of grandkids playing in the same spots their parents did. Over time, we’ve observed one another’s cooking skills refine and develop to the point some have become gourmet cooks. One miracle worker makes duck and twice-baked deer steak melt in our mouths. Another created fish tacos paired with fresh from the garden pico de gallo that rank among the best I’ve eaten. Who can resist bacon wrapped dove breasts? About 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year, and according to the American Diabetes Association, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has doubled in the last 20 years.

The disease rate has sky-rocketed, and its toll is obvious. Kansans spend $2.4 billion annually in direct and indirect diabetes medical expenses. The community effects are quantifiable, but if you suffer from diabetes, or know someone who does, you know that the personal challenges can be unremitting.

As barriers seem to be continual, so is the diabetes management process. Thankfully, there are many lifestyle factors you can adjust when taking control of glucose levels. An evident one is the type of food you consume, but a few less obvious ones include medication, mood, and physical activity.

· Medication- When diagnosed with diabetes, medications are often prescribed. This addition can make a big impact on your daily routine. By keeping a record of medications, doses, and timing, you may be able to control glucose levels better. This can help you increase awareness of changes in symptoms so you can work with your doctor to make any necessary adjustments.

· Mood- Mental health can be greatly affected by diabetes, and your mood may seem to be on a constant rollercoaster due to rapid blood sugar changes. Since mood can indicate glucose spikes and drops, it’s a good idea to note how you feel. This awareness can help you build a stronger connection between your mind, body, and diabetes management strategy.

· Physical Activity- Regular exercise can play a major role in fluctuating glucose levels, and it can help you keep your diabetes in check. Keeping a log of your exercise routine can help you find the types of physical activity that make you feel your best and keep you motivated to meet your fitness goals!

Lifestyle choices affect blood sugar and taking note of these habits impacts diabetes management. It gives insight into your symptoms and allows you to identify habits that have positive and negative effects on blood sugar.

This national program is designed to boost the health of those with prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. LETTER: Former County Clerk endorses Bobbi Dreiling

The ovaries contain all of the eggs at birth they will ever contain. The menstrual cycle controls the monthly release of eggs until menopause. The menopausal transition starts when this process changes and production of hormones like estrogen begins to decline. Most women start this transition (also called perimenopause) in their late 40s. But it can happen earlier or later.

During this time, women may experience certain symptoms, such as changes in their periods and hot flashes. If a woman hasn’t had a period in 12 months, she can say she’s entered menopause. But for many women this transition is less clear.

“Around one in eight women enter menopause because of a medical intervention, like having their ovaries removed surgically,” says Dr. Sarah Temkin, a women’s health expert at NIH. If this happens, they enter menopause suddenly, with no transition. The bothersome symptoms that they experience are often more significant than if they had entered menopause naturally.

If you haven’t had a period in a year, blood tests can verify that you’ve reached menopause. But no test can confirm when you’ve begun the transition into menopause. If you have symptoms, your doctor may order tests to rule out health conditions.

The menopausal transition (perimenopause) usually lasts around seven years. But it can be shorter or longer.

Many women experience only mild symptoms during perimenopause. For others, symptoms are severe and can interfere with work and life. The most common are called vasomotor symptoms. These include hot flashes and night sweats

“A lot of symptoms can be interrelated,” says Dr. Andrea LaCroix, a menopause researcher at the University of California, San Diego. “If you have hot flashes, they might interfere with your sleep. Then once you get sleep deprived, you don’t feel so good overall.”

If you have mild hot flashes, you may be able to manage them with lifestyle changes. These include dressing in layers that can be removed, carrying a portable fan, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

Women with severe symptoms now have several drug options to consider. Some women can safely use menopausal hormone therapy, or MHT. Two decades ago, hormone therapy for women in the menopausal transition fell out of favor. Doctors had concerns about the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, and blood clots from hormone therapy. These concerns were based on a large study that tested hormone therapy to prevent chronic disease in older women. The study showed higher chronic disease risk for some women taking MHT.

More recent studies have confirmed these findings but also found that healthy, younger women who use MHT don’t have the same increased risk as older women. Talk with your health care provider about the potential risks and benefits if you’re considering MHT.

Some women can’t use hormone therapy because of certain personal risk factors. Others may not want to use it. “But there are other treatment choices,” says LaCroix.

“All of these treatments have been found to be helpful, so women have choices.” LaCroix says.

“There’s a huge amount of stigma about women talking about their reproductive health,” Temkin says.

“Women sometimes feel, going through the menopausal transition, that they’re in it alone,” agrees Dr. Chhanda Dutta, an aging expert at NIH. “And while women experience this transition in very different ways, they need to be aware that they’re not alone.”

Perimenopause symptoms can be different for everyone and include:

· Changes in your period. Periods happening very close together or farther apart than usual; heavy bleeding or spotting; periods that last for more than a week.

· Hot flashes. A sudden feeling of heat in the upper part or all of your body.

· Night sweats. Hot flashes that happen during sleep.

· Sleep problems. Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

· Bladder issues. Sudden urges to urinate, or urine leaking during exercise, sneezing, or laughing.

· Changes in vaginal health and sexuality. Vaginal dryness; discomfort or pain during sex; changes in sexual desire.

· Mood changes. Feeling moody or more irritable; feelings of anxiety or depression.

· Changes in body composition. Muscle loss or fat gain; skin can become thinner; joints and muscles may feel stiff or achy.

As the people across this great nation prepare to make decisions that will shape our future, let’s look at how the next administration faces important decisions to secure America’s energy advantage at a time of rising geopolitical volatility around the world.

We look around the world today, and ongoing conflicts remind us that secure, reliable access to energy is at the core of our nation’s energy security, as well as the security of America’s allies. But our energy security should never be taken for granted, and we need policies that ensure we can meet our energy needs tomorrow, not just today.

With escalating tensions in the Middle East and Putin’s war in Ukraine approaching its third year, we cannot emphasize enough the commanding presence of American oil and natural gas in the global market and the energy security benefits it provides.

Despite the noise from doomsday scenarios, the reality is that oil and natural gas will be needed for decades to come - not just years. Because global demand for energy is rising, there’s no better place to produce it than here in America.

We produce the most reliable, affordable energy in the world under the strongest environmental standards. American oil and natural gas will continue to be cornerstones of the energy mix for generations to come.

Let’s reflect on why U.S. energy leadership is so crucial. We look around the world today, and ongoing conflicts remind us that secure, reliable access to energy is at the core of our nation’s security – as well as the security of America’s allies. Yet, despite war and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Europe, we are not in an energy crisis.

Because of the resilience and innovation of nearly 11 million American workers supported by the oil and natural gas industry. These men and women ramped up production when the world needed it most, even in the face of challenging policies from Washington. Their efforts kept the lights on around the world - something every state and federal policymaker should commend.

With wars in multiple energy-producing regions and threats to shipping in places like the Red Sea, the stakes are high. It’s a stark reminder of the poor energy policy decisions made in the 1960s and 70s, leading to the 1973 oil crisis, with skyrocketing prices and economic turmoil.

In this moment, let’s learn from those mistakes – not repeat them. We simply must, because as we approach 2050, the global population is projected to reach 10 billion. With energy demand set to increase, we need energy from all sources.

Thus, it has never been more important for America to emerge as the runaway top supplier of both oil and natural gas.

Since 2015, methane emissions from U.S. oil and natural gas production are down 37% while production is up 40%, according to EPA data. Production up and emissions down. That is what the oil and natural gas industry strives for. The American oil and natural gas industry is in for the long haul. Regardless of what happens on Election Day, the oil and natural gas industry is here to stay.

Let’s be clear, there is no more critical industry today than American oil and natural gas. However, some argue that the world no longer needs oil and natural gas and that we can move past them entirely. Others in Washington are pushing policies that restrict access to abundant sources of oil and natural gas, make us dependent on China for critical minerals, limit consumer choices, and threaten the very infrastructure that keeps our energy system running.

These policies are misguided. They discourage investment in energy projects and impose unrealistic timelines and mandates. What Americans need are choices, not mandates, and honesty about the consequences of losing our energy advantage or sowing the seeds of a new energy crisis.

Here’s some energy reality for those folks: Even with the most optimistic projections for renewables, nearly half of all global energy will still come from oil and natural gas in 2050 - roughly where it is today. The question is whether that energy will come from America, with our commitment to environmental stewardship, or from nations that do not share our values.

The next administration must focus on protecting consumer choice, restoring permits for LNG exports, expanding access to our vast energy resources, and advancing sensible tax policy.

These are not just popular positions - they’re essential. Polling in political “swing” states shows that 8 in 10 voters, across party lines and including independents, support increasing U.S. production of oil and natural gas.

Even a national poll by The New York Times found that nearly two thirds of voters support boosting domestic oil and natural gas production.

American energy leadership is our insurance policy against volatility and a pillar of our national security. It’s the result of decades of bipartisan commitment, with every president from Jimmy Carter to Donald Trump calling for greater American energy independence.

You don’t have to read a newspaper or watch cable news to know that given the state of the world, there has never been a more critical time for strong U.S. energy production and the policies that support it.

Affordable, reliable energy from U.S. oil and natural gas is not just an economic necessity - it’s a matter of national security.

Let’s embrace this moment for U.S. oil and natural gas, take pride in our achievements, and forge ahead with the determination to leave a legacy of strength and security for generations to come.

LETTER: Critical role of American energy leadership

About this time each year we begin to hear and read stories that all center on the illegal taking of Kansas wildlife. Whether it’s Bald Eagles being shot, outfitters being investigated for assisting their clients in illegally taking and transporting game or numerous game law violations intentionally and knowingly committed by people mistakenly calling themselves hunters, it all amounts to theft from those of us who attempt to abide by all the game rules and regulations of our state.

Kansas is divided into 105 counties and currently a drastic shortage of natural resource officers (NRO’s) are saddled with the intense responsibility of patrolling all those counties, making Kansas wildlife some of the least protected in America. Each year those NRO’s check tens of thousands of hunters and fishermen in the field and about 96% of them are found to be law-abiding. Unfortunately, many non-hunters associate ethical hunters with the small percentage who are not.

Kansas Dept. of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has an excellent tool to help fight wildlife crimes called Operation Game Thief. It’s a toll-free telephone hotline, 1-877-426-3843 that can be accessed anytime of the day or night, any day of the year. Callers are given the choice to remain anonymous and each call is immediately relayed to the natural resource officer nearest the violation. Examples of activities that can be reported over the game thief hotline are road hunting, trespassing, littering, vandalism, drinking while hunting, taking more game than allowed by law, using illegal equipment, hunting out of season or taking wildlife for which there is no legal season.

Two important rules to remember when observing illegal wildlife related activities are;

· Never confront the suspects you observe committing these crimes, (meaning you must refrain from marching them to the nearest police station at gunpoint like Clint Eastwood.)

· Be observant and be prepared to provide as much information as possible about what you observe, such as detailed descriptions of the people and vehicles including license plate numbers, and location and time of the incident. My wife also reminds me that everyone these days has a cell phone with a camera at their fingertips, making it easy to help document what you see.

Calls to Operation Game Thief have resulted in arrest and convictions on violations from vandalism to deer poaching and everything in between. Drug operations have even been uncovered as a result of calls to this number. Perhaps the worst result of wildlife related crimes is the damage caused to the image of those of us who attempt to abide by all the wildlife rules and regulations. I refuse to be categorized with those who call themselves “hunters” but refuse to abide by the rules. For inland areas supposedly immune from catastrophic storm surges, mountainous “climate havens” like&nbsp;<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/asheville-tragedy-shows-climate-change-safe-havens-experts/story?id=114362166">Asheville, North Carolina</a>&nbsp;were startled to bear the brunt of apocalyptic-like flooding.

On its heels, Hurricane Milton is expected to cause far more damage as it rams into Florida’s denser population centers.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sadly,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hurricane-helene-fema-826effecab238ff0acf0556ad64b0df2">federal assistance</a>&nbsp;is being politicized less than 30 days from a national election and shrouding a longer-term policy issue for those caught in the middle.&nbsp;Climate migration.&nbsp;As weather disasters continue to intensify,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/features/americans-moving-climate-change/">50 million</a>&nbsp;Americans will leave risky areas (abandonment areas) for less risky areas (climate havens) in the coming decades.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/features/americans-moving-climate-change/">30% of Americans cited climate change</a>&nbsp;as a motivator to move in 2024.

With Kansas facing a demographic vice due to historically low birth rates and low retention of younger Kansans, being on the wrong side of the climate migration equation will exacerbate fiscal health and quality of life concerns for many communities. The last time climate,&nbsp;<a href="https://fdcenterprises.com/how-soil-erosion-and-farming-practices-lead-to-the-dust-bowl/">public policy</a>, and despair collided here,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/surviving-the-dust-bowl-mass-exodus-plains/#:~:text=In%20the%20rural%20area%20outside,those%2C%20200%2C000%20moved%20to%20California.">2.5 million people migrated</a>&nbsp;from the Dust Bowl.&nbsp;So, it might be worth asking just how well positioned is Kansas, or your community, for this great climate re-shuffle?

For starters, we couldn’t be any more inland if we tried. A geographical refuge from rising seas, hurricane torrents, and wildfires; a free space on your climate haven bingo card.&nbsp;What about those Kansas winds? Few places are better positioned for renewable energy being the nation’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eia.gov/state/analysis.php?sid=KS#:~:text=The%20state%20ranked%20among%20the,highest%20amount%20among%20the%20states.">third largest share of wind-generated electricity</a>. Even&nbsp;<a href="https://www.accuweather.com/en/severe-weather/is-tornado-alley-shifting-east/1162839">Tornado Alley is shifting</a>. Tornado frequency and wickedness have found a new home in the Mississippi and Tennessee River valleys drawn like a magnet to the warming Gulf’s moist air. Ironically, southwest drought conditions help by sending dryer air over Kansas.

On the flip side, droughts currently cover almost half of Kansas (<a href="https://www.drought.gov/states/kansas">46.4%</a>) due to heat and water shortages.&nbsp;<a href="https://projects.propublica.org/climate-migration/">Farm crop yields are projected to decline</a>&nbsp;across the state in coming decades. Unlike some Great Lakes’ climate havens next to the world’s largest freshwater supply, farming practices and climatic changes have transformed our great underground lake (Ogallala Aquifer) into a trickle thus nudging western Kansas closer to climate abandonment.&nbsp;Nothing makes people move more than flooding. Since 2000,&nbsp;<a href="https://firststreet.org/research-library/climate-abandonment-areas">3.2 million people</a>&nbsp;have left climate abandonment areas due to high flood risk with another 7.5 million projected by 2053.&nbsp;However, flooding repercussions are acutely local.&nbsp;<a href="https://assets.riskfactor.com/media/National%20Risk%20Assessment%20Climate%20Abandon.pdf">Research</a>&nbsp;shows when 5-10% of properties in neighborhoods become flood risks, people start to move. This tipping point leads to climate abandonment. This same research shows one-third of Sedgwick County may classify as abandonment areas by 2053, one of the nation’s largest increases.&nbsp;The bottom line is state/ local governments have the ability and responsibility to help their citizenry adapt to climate change, avoid out-migration, and advance social equity.

Last year, Kansas lawmakers finally stopped kicking the can by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.enidnews.com/news/kansas-farmers-brace-for-water-cuts-to-save-ogallala-aquifer/article_573d6b1c-3ff9-11ef-97ff-8bf8acef01f4.html">enforcing conservation measures</a>&nbsp;and approving&nbsp;<a href="https://www.farmtalknews.com/news/kansas-makes-historic-investment-in-preserving-the-ogallala-aquifer/article_86a6a308-179c-11ef-9aa8-1fa01ea4d166.html#:~:text=Kansas%20makes%20historic%20investment%20in%20preserving%20the%20Ogallala%20Aquifer,-by%20Greg%20Doering&amp;text=An%20appropriation%20of%20%2435%20million,state's%20water%20resources%20in%20history.">unprecedented funding</a>&nbsp;as a&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/06/30/hoping-for-a-miracle-to-save-the-ogallala-aquifer-prepare-for-the-new-dust-bowl/">another Dust Bowl looms</a>.&nbsp;And even as some counties drag their feet, practices such as stormwater bio-retention areas, woodlands restoration, renewable energy ordinances (wind and solar), incentivizing infill development, adopting resilient building codes, expanded tree canopies, floodplain buy-out programs, etc. are already deployed in many parts of Kansas.&nbsp;Because as they already know, there’s really no such thing as a climate haven.

INSIGHT KANSAS:  Will climate migration be our new Dust Bowl?

Corn stunt spiroplasma and its associated vector (corn leafhopper, Dalbulus maidis) have been recently confirmed in Kansas. Corn stunt spiroplasma has been confirmed in 26 counties. Recent scouting efforts across Kansas confirm active leaf hoppers in many additional counties. Although the majority of the positive reports are from field corn, K-State Plant Pathologist Rodrigo Onofre says we also confirmed corn stunt spiroplasma in sweet corn as well. High levels of disease were found in late-planted and double-cropped corn, leading to potential yield reduction, says Onofre. Symptoms of the disease may include shortened internodes, which can result in a stunted stature of the corn plant as well as leaves with red discoloration. Because other biotic and abiotic factors can cause red or purple discoloration in corn, laboratory testing is important to diagnose corn stunt disease and distinguish it from other stressors.

In the past, corn stunt disease has been limited in distribution to southern Texas, Florida, and California. Corn stunt is caused by a wall-less bacterial pathogen called corn stunt spiroplasma. The corn leafhopper can also transmit additional pathogens, either singly or in combination with the corn stunt spiroplasma. To date, only corn stunt spiroplasma has been detected in Kansas, says Onofre. Additional research is needed to determine the presence of other pathogens vectored by corn leafhopper in Kansas.

This disease is spread only by the corn leafhopper, which was also just confirmed in Kansas. Corn leafhopper acquires pathogens within minutes of feeding on infected corn plants but it can take up to 30 days for the leafhopper to be able to infect healthy corn plants during feeding events. The corn leafhopper is relatively simple to identify under magnification. These leafhoppers are light tan to yellowish-white in color and approximately 1/8” long. Two distinct dark spots between the antennae and eyes are very characteristic of this species. Nymphs lack wings and can vary in color. Like most leafhoppers, all stages move quickly when disturbed and hide in shaded areas of corn plants. Disease testing – Help us track the disease

If you suspect a field has corn stunt, submit a sample to the K-State Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab. The best type of sample for corn stunt testing is living symptomatic leaf tissue. Dry/senesced corn leaves are not recommended and may lead to inconclusive results. Entire

plants are not required to test for this disease, only symptomatic leaves, as only the midrib will be used in testing.
