Somewhere on my lengthy list of unanswered questions is the query that asks “Just how far will we go to protect ourselves from ourselves?” 

Don’t get me wrong, there are some very necessary warnings out there, like huge letters on a tank of gasoline that read “FLAMMABLE,” or flags that tell us “Road Work Ahead.” But for every good and reasonable warning are a dozen other absolutely wacky warnings that leave us shaking our head.

The thing to remember about wacky warnings is that they got there because someone, somewhere, actually did what the warnings tell you not to do. So, someone somewhere tried eating that deodorant stick before the warning “Do Not Ingest” was put there, and so on and so forth. I’m convinced the need for most wacky warnings come about as dares, and are preceded by those four infamous little words, “here, hold my beer.”

The outdoor industry is not immune to wacky warnings and offers plenty of products that bear them. 

The owner’s manual for a new gun I bought says “Appropriate use for this firearm means using your firearm for legal purposes.” So evidently criminals using guns to commit crimes haven’t read the owner’s manual first? “Always keep fingers and other body parts away from the muzzle” is another firearm warning. I already know there’s a hole in the end of the barrel where that thing comes out, oh now what’s it called?…Oh yeah, the bullet, so I shouldn’t have to feel around there with my finger to find it, and I can’t imagine what other body parts the warning means. The manual for my crossbow tells me “Always THINK before you shoot.” Now why’d they have to go and open that can-a-worms?

And speaking of worms, I found “Not for human consumption” on all fish bait, whether artificially made from who-knows-what, or catfish stink bait made from blood, liver and other organic stuff.

 Now I may have had this fishin’ thing wrong all along. I’ve always thought the goal was to use the bait to catch fish to take home and eat, not to sit in the boat and eat the bait. Part of the fun of fishing for me has always been takin’ along a nice picnic lunch or at least snacks. I really can’t picture myself taking a loaf of bread and making sandwiches by spreading slices of bread with stinky catfish bait. On one brand of catfish stink bait, I found the warning “Beware, dogs love this stuff.” Not sure I’d have put that on the jar if my goal was to sell that bait to fishermen to actually catch fish. 

And I’m not sure why I should “Beware” that my dog might love it. 

Should I “Beware” because all my expensive bait might disappear, and show up later that night as chunks all over the couch that now smell worse than the bait, or because the dog could grow fins and swim away down the river? One particular artificial bait made by the Berkley Company looks like crayfish packed in a pouch of liquid of some sort. It’s called “Gulp Alive” and the warning reads “Looks alive, Feels alive, Tastes alive; not for human consumption.” Now, to a good-ole’-boy out for a relaxing day on the water, that’s like dealing him all four aces and asking him not to play them!

On canisters of black powder used for muzzle loading guns I found this odd warning “Caution, do not eat, drink or smoke around this product.” Now, a warning against smoking anywhere near gun powder is one of those things that should never have to be said, but why not eat or drink around black powder? I have to remind myself again that these warnings usually come about because of some actual event.

Maybe someone, somewhere was once enjoying a sandwich while loading their muzzleloader, unknowingly ingested some black powder from the air along with the sandwich, and the next morning while completing their morning constitutional, blew the outhouse into the next county.

Perhaps the product I was most surprised to find warnings on were the little hand, foot and toe warmers that you stick inside your gloves or boots. 

The warning read “Caution, for external use only. Do not allow contents to contact eyes or mouth.” OK, not quite sure what to say about the “external use only” part of the warning, but I must say how disappointed I am that I can’t eat hand warmers! Yes, there have been a few times while sitting in a deer blind when I’ve neglected to pack a snack and wished I had just a little something to nibble on, but I can honestly say I’ve never considered chomping on my hand or foot warmers. As for the rest of the warning, I can’t remember the last time my mouth or eyes got cold and I considered putting a hand or foot warmer on them.

My warning to you readers is that reading this column will either make you pee your pants with laughter or put you to sleep, hopefully not both at the same time.

Exploring Outdoor Kansas: Wacky warnings

Last week, a bipartisan commission of former state lawmakers finished working on and recommended a solution to a long-standing problem: Kansas’s terrible legislative pay scale.

Currently our state legislature, which is officially supposed to meet for only about 90 days—but which actually often involves much more work than that, frequently spread throughout the whole year—pays its members a base salary of only $27,000. While the coverage of per diem expenses does allow for some variability, still, when all the costs of traveling and housing are added up, Kansas lawmakers are some of the worst paid in the whole country.

The former legislators who met to find a solution to this issue were fully aware of the problem. Some had stories of juggling multiple temp jobs to make ends meet when not in session, while others noted how the current system unintentionally biases the legislature, often limiting those who aspire to run for office to those who can afford the pay cut or already have job security, meaning that retired or independently wealthy candidates predominate. And don’t forget the temptation which poorly paid politicians face when well-financed special interests come calling!

The recommendation of the commission to increase the base salary of legislators to $43,000, with a built-in provision for annual salary adjustments, should be applauded and implemented immediately. More than that, it should lead us to reflect upon our expectations for those elected to office, and whether they’re worth paying for.

Across the United States, the notion of a “citizen legislature” has always had a strong hold. Rooted in small-r republican, localist, and agrarian convictions, it is the idea that those who represent voters should be discouraged from developing any serious involvement with their civic role, and should treat government work as a temporary act of public service instead.

Whatever the value of that vision, its perpetuation despite massive changes in economics, technology, and urbanization over the past century and half is a hindrance to thinking clearly about the political choices which confront voters, where political experience, policy knowledge, and government training needs to be balanced with maintaining local, democratic connections.

Many states recognize this, at least when it comes to matters of compensation. Only 14 states (Kansas included) hold to a genuinely “part-time” model in how they define legislative duties; even states with legislatures that meet only once every two years tend to have hybrid systems, recognizing that legislators put in significant hours and deserve to be paid accordingly.

That those we elect need to stay close to and be responsive to those who elect them is a central feature of democratic accountability. But there are ways of thinking about accountability which still acknowledge the specialized skills that good public servants develop, and the steep learning curve they go through to get there.

 Imagining politics as a permanent entry-level job, idealizing the inexperienced as somehow more “authentic,” is the sort of delusion which may bring voters to wrongly see practical legislative work as an annoying distraction, unworthy of support (even while continuing to unreflectively re-elect incumbents whose name or party or face they trust).

In the end, the truth is that politicians do real, complicated work, and while in office ought to be regarded as engaged in a full-time profession. More realism in how we view our representatives

(and how we pay them) would, perhaps, enable us to better assess their performance—and would likely provide us with more diverse alternatives to choose from when elections roll around.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Politics is a profession worth paying for

As we approach the November 2023 general municipal election, I am encouraging Kansans to take advantage of the opportunity to serve as a poll worker at your county election office. 

Poll working is an excellent way to pursue civic engagement and learn more about our electoral process. 

Kansans who are 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, registered to vote and willing to complete training provided by the local election official can serve as poll workers. 

Additionally, Kansans as young as 16 years of age can serve as poll workers through our “Student Serves” initiative. 

The Secretary of State’s Office has partnered with various education organizations to encourage high school student participation. There are several benefits: students may receive minor compensation for their time, earn community service hours or extra credit for school, and participation makes students stand out on college and scholarship applications. 

I hope parents and teachers will urge their students to volunteer. 

Poll workers play a vital role and will have the opportunity to work with other members of the community and learn about the inner workings of Kansas elections. I urge all eligible Kansans to consider becoming a poll worker.

LETTER: Opportunity for students to serve as poll workers for election

In less than a decade, there has been a shift in land ownership trends in Kansas.

“There is a growing demographic of landowners in Kansas that are becoming more geographically and generationally removed from agriculture,” said Robin Reid, an agricultural economist at Kansas State University.

Reid cites data from 2015 indicating that 85% of Kansas land was owned by people living in the state. Research is ongoing, she says, but in 2022, data suggests a notable shift in land being owned by people who live outside the state’s borders.

“Some of that is due to inheritance and some of that is due to people purchasing land – especially hunting ground,” Reid said. “But we also know the No. 1 question in our county extension offices across the state is from landowners wanting to know the going rates for land leases and information on Kansas lease law.” Reid said K-State is hosting the first-ever Kansas Landowner Conference on Nov. 10 to address challenges related to land ownership in Kansas. She notes that in addition to helping landowners build networks and learn about land management, the program includes information on:

· Agricultural land market conditions · Land lease management · Property tax regulations

“There is so much that we want to emphasize about having a good relationship between a landowner and their tenant,” Reid said. “Open communication and getting a lease in writing will help to streamline the process of managing a land lease and avoiding conflict.”

Ashlee Westerhold, director of the Office of Farm and Ranch Transition in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, will also be presenting during the conference. She said that 2 in 3 – 66% - Kansas farms are owned and operated by someone age 55 or older.

“So, if you think about that,” she said, “in the next 15 years as landowners head towards 70 years old, they will be retiring or thinking about transferring land. We’re going to see a huge wave of ownership transfer from one generation to the next.”

In her current role, Westerhold said she works with many families who are inheriting farmland while living in Kansas City, Wichita or other large cities.

“They do not necessarily have plans to come back to the farm, but they want to keep ownership,” she said. “And it’s important to have conversations about transition and succession even though these children might not live on the farm someday. We’re helping them become better landowners once they inherit the farm.”

CAMPBELL: Number of absentee owners rising in the state, say K-State agricultural economists

The more you learn about the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program at Fort Hays State University and the remarkable young individuals it supports, the more inspired you become. The program is distinctive in the way it highlights the importance of not just academic success but also service to the community. The stories of resilience and determination exhibited by these students are awe-inspiring.

The Schmidt Foundation Scholars program is not just about financial assistance. It also emphasizes mentoring, networking, and building relationships. This holistic approach recognizes the importance of a supportive community. It provides opportunities for these scholars to thrive, both academically and personally. Their experiences will undoubtedly shape them into future leaders who will contribute positively to the university, their community, and the state of Kansas.

These young people’s stories are incredible. Applications reveal some students who don’t have parents in their daily lives, and those who are being raised by other families. It is very challenging to be successful in high school when you don't have family support. It takes an exceptional young person to take on responsibilities like working to support their younger siblings when there is no other option.

“To have that kind of fortitude just to get through high school is extraordinary – and these students do so while achieving a high grade point average,” shared Gary Shorman, president of the Schmidt Foundation. “They are very smart. They're articulate. They have goals in the world that they want to accomplish. We want to lift them up and give them a stronger chance to achieve their dreams.”

The dedication of the selection committee, led by Jessica Albin, in finding deserving and resilient students is genuinely commendable. Their commitment to choosing academically strong individuals who exhibit leadership skills and possess the potential to make valuable contributions is pivotal in ensuring the program's success.

“We look for academically strong students who we are confident can succeed at the university level and will embrace the mentoring opportunities included in the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program,” Jessica said. “We are looking for students who demonstrate clear leadership skills and who we believe will make valuable contributions to our university, the community of Hays, and the state of Kansas.”

She went on to say that there is research that describes how purpose within our work, rather than passion or even happiness, is the best predictor of resilience and longevity in the workplace.

“There will always be mundane aspects of our jobs; we may not feel “passionate” about every single responsibility we have. But if we know that our work really matters because it changes lives, we are more likely to stick out those hard days. It is a blessing to be part of this committee because it is without question purposeful and life-changing,” Jessica said.

Indeed, this program is changing lives while shaping the university and the communities we serve.

Bianca Bultman is in her third year at FHSU and is a member of the first class of Schmidt Foundation Scholars. Bianca grew up in Elkhart, Kansas. She is a junior majoring in nursing with dreams of becoming a labor and delivery nurse.

“I knew that Fort Hays State University had the best nursing program. Since I wanted to be the best possible nurse for my patients, I wanted to attend the FHSU,” Bianca said.

Bianca worked tirelessly to save money for college, knowing that loans would be necessary. Her mother’s encouragement and the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program gave her hope and the opportunity to change her life.

“Knowing that I could go to college and have a chance to change my family’s life is the greatest gift,” she said. “Because of this scholarship, I can continue my education and show my sisters that it is possible even when the odds are against us.”

Josey Dove's story is another testament to the transformative power of education. She is a sophomore from Ozawkie, Kansas, majoring in music with a minor in psychology. Josey’s dream is to become a music therapist.

Growing up, her dad had constantly told her how important education was. Her dad dropped out of high school. Later, he earned his GED. He always stressed to Josey that she had so much potential. She just had to be willing to work hard. He challenged her to build a better life than he did.

Her father's belief in her potential and hard work paid off when she received this scholarship.

Edwin Garcia-Arreola is a junior from Lakin, Kansas, majoring in corporate communications and translating and interpreting in Spanish. He is actively involved in the Dane G. Hansen Scholarship Hall community and the Spanish Club. These involvements align with his interests and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The Schmidt Foundation Scholarship has relieved him of financial burdens and provided a supportive community. This scholarship has opened doors to networking opportunities, mentoring relationships, and friendships that he believes will extend beyond his college years. Edwin's family is incredibly proud, and the scholarship has alleviated their concerns regarding his education.

Edwin encourages new students to be confident in seeking guidance and support from upperclassmen and mentors and to be proactive in taking advantage of all the opportunities the scholarship offers, including etiquette training and networking events.

He highlights the importance of believing in oneself and recognizing one’s potential to make a difference. He underscores that although this scholarship is an outstanding achievement, utilizing the services provided by FHSU at the Fischli-Wills Center for Student Success can be a game-changer for students as they navigate their college journey and transition into young adulthood.

It takes an exceptional young person to take on responsibilities like working to support their younger siblings when there is no other option.“To have that kind of fortitude just to get through high school is extraordinary – and these students do so while achieving a high grade point average,” shared Gary Shorman, president of the Schmidt Foundation. “They are very smart. They're articulate. They have goals in the world that they want to accomplish. We want to lift them up and give them a stronger chance to achieve their dreams.”The dedication of the selection committee, led by Jessica Albin, in finding deserving and resilient students is genuinely commendable. Since I wanted to be the best possible nurse for my patients, I wanted to attend the FHSU,” Bianca said.Bianca worked tirelessly to save money for college, knowing that loans would be necessary. Heart of a Tiger: Scholarship program shapes our leaders of tomorrow

Every year in October, Jana’s Campaign joins with allies and supporters across the country to recognize and educate others about Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

 It evolved from the “Day of Unity” in October 1981 observed by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. 

Now in its 42nd year, individuals and communities across our nation join together to raise awareness of domestic violence, take action to advocate for change, intervene to stop acts of domestic violence, and support those who are impacted. 

The theme for this year, #Every1KnowsSome1, was developed collaboratively by the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Its aim is to emphasize the widespread nature of domestic violence, and its effects on many individuals. 

Nationally, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men, have experienced domestic violence by an intimate partner or ex-intimate partner (CDC, 2020). From reports submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), 35 lives were lost due to domestic violence in 2022. 

Domestic violence occurs in many forms- verbal, emotional, psychological, digital, sexual, and/or physical abuse. It can be extreme jealousy, possessiveness, unwanted touching, coercion, and excessive arguments. It is about power and control. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of age, race or ethnicity, religion, employment or educational level, marital status, physical ability, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation. 

To prevent domestic violence, it's essential that each of us plays a role. An initial step that #Every1 can engage in is educating themselves and spreading awareness. 

This can involve organizing awareness events featuring purple ribbons and Silent Witness displays, as well as participating in nationally scheduled events. 

We invite you to take note of October 19, designated as Purple Thursday, and actively participate in discussions and activities related to these events, whether online or in person. 

To do our part, Jana’s Campaign will post facts and statistics about domestic violence on our social media platforms throughout October. 

On Monday, October 16, we will host a Facebook Live covering the topic, its impacts, and share resources. 

Additionally, Jana’s Campaign will host our annual fundraising event, Empty Place at the Table, on October 7, in Hays. 

This event serves as a tribute to individuals who tragically lost their lives to domestic violence, including Jana Mackey, whose life-and-death inspired the establishment of Jana's Campaign. At the event, a symbolic table is set, featuring an empty seat and dinner setting. This poignant arrangement symbolizes the void left by Jana's death and the many other deaths caused by domestic violence, a void that resonates at tables worldwide.

When I first met my husband, a field-trained black lab owned him.

 Rebel, an intelligent canine, shared a personality mix of laid-back house dog and determined hunter. This retriever and his favorite human had enjoyed several years of rustic bachelorhood at Meade State Fish Hatchery where Reb mastered responding to both verbal and hands signals. Dog and man led an idyllic life hunting, fishing, and working fishponds located far from town and people.

Once I married his human and joined their crew, Rebel determined I improved both his treat and couch-lounging opportunities. It didn’t take long for the black beast to make room for me in his Labrador heart. 

Not long after our wedding, my husband changed jobs and transferred from Meade Lake to Ellis. Moving to town forced Rebel to accept a difficult adjustment to his previously perfect life. He had to trade working fishponds for retrieving evening papers and supervising a garden.

Though he missed the freedom of roaming hatchery grounds where he rousted game birds and helped his favorite human feed and care for fish, Rebel discovered new delights. Our at-the-edge-of-town yard contained a mulberry, pear, and apple trees, which begs the question, “Why would fruit trees offer a bonus in a Labrador retriever’s life?”

This particular dog loved fruit, especially mulberries, pears, and apples—especially once they fell to the ground and fermented a few days. Yes, our pet was a fruit drop lush.

In early summer, I’d find him sleeping soundly amidst mounds of fallen mulberries, his distended belly rising and falling rhythmically with each breath. I laughed to see purple mulberry stains circling his muzzle following his binges. Once he awoke from a boozy snooze, he’d gaze with unfocused eyes and wobble as he rose to greet me. His fruity indulgences didn’t alter this loving dog’s happy personality.

In early fall, if I called and Reb didn’t come running, I’d look for him sleeping off a toot under our pear and apple trees, heavy head weighing down paws. Yeasty, fermented fruit scent permeated the air while low flying, inebriated wasps sipped mushy pulp or circled tipsily above over-ripe yellow and red orbs and Rebel. 

To my surprise, the insects never stung when I collected fruit they crawled in and out of. Their tranquility explained our pet’s relaxed state.

I didn’t want to encourage addiction in our beloved retriever, so I’d race him to fallen fruit once I arrived home from work. He mastered a hang-dog look that nearly broke my heart as I tossed his beloved apples and pears into a five-gallon bucket. That gaze tore me apart with guilt for removing him from the freedom of the fish hatchery and transferring him to town. Then I deprived him of his one pleasure that made city-living worthwhile.

Participants in high school sports and performing arts are under tremendous pressure these days – from parents, teachers, coaches and peers. Their days are consumed with school, sports and activities. They are trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be – all while having to compare themselves to everyone else on social media. It’s easy to see why high school students have a lot on their plates … and their minds.

It is time for all of us to turn our attention to these students, including the activity participants at schools&nbsp;in&nbsp;Kansas. Empathy is so important. No matter who you are—a parent, teacher, coach, athletic administrator, performing arts director or anyone else who interacts with teens—we can all play a part in looking out for them.

That’s why the KSHSAA and the NFHS are launching the&nbsp;#WeSeeYou&nbsp;Campaign.&nbsp;Together, we want to create a culture of caring in our school communities – one where everyone feels seen and supported,&nbsp;especially&nbsp;our students.When one Kansas student benefits from such support, the value extends to others across our state.&nbsp;

Every teenager—not just the honor roll student or star athlete—wants to feel seen by someone who matters to them, like a parent, teacher, coach or director.

Keep in mind that teens are seeing life through a highlight reel.

Teenagers are “seen” a lot on social media, but are they seen for who they truly are? Be the person who wants to know and support the&nbsp;real&nbsp;them.&nbsp; Get to know students for who they are, not just what they do.

Create a culture where&nbsp;everyone&nbsp;is looking out for each other.

It is not one person’s responsibility to check in on every student’s mental well-being. We can&nbsp;all&nbsp;play a part in noticing, acknowledging and offering support to one another.

Remember your influence is greater than you often realize.

Far beyond students’ academic or athletic potential, you can make a difference in their lives by paying attention to their behavior and who they are as people.&nbsp;

There are promising results from handwashing, and if we teach children good hand- hygiene, we can further reduce the spread of disease! Here are a few simple tips to share with your kids:

1. Wash your hands multiple times throughout the day. This includes before and after eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

2. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Hum “Happy Birthday” twice through to make sure you scrub long enough.

3. Lather with soap and water. Soap is a detergent that removes bacteria and dirt when it is lathered, so using enough soap is key in removing germs.

4. Scrub every part of your hand. If you don’t think about it, it is easy to miss the tops of your hands, under your nails, and between your fingers. Bacteria will build up if you don’t reach every part!

5. In public places, there are many objects that are in constant use such as door handles and water fountains. Using your paper towel to access these areas after you’ve washed can help to reduce exposure to germs.

6. At home, change out cloth hand towels often to limit the build-up of dirt and bacteria. This will keep your hands clean for longer!

7. Consider hanging small posters above sinks to remind kids of proper handwashing techniques.

Staying healthy throughout the fall is challenging, so get a head start with proper handwashing to reduce your family’s risk of getting sick.

As the calendar turns over to October it reminds me of Breast Cancer Awareness month and cooler weather. 

It is very likely that you or someone you know has been affected by breast cancer. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the United States breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women after skin cancer. Cancer is also one of the leading causes of death in the United States, ranking second only after heart disease. One in every four deaths is due to cancer. While there are a lot of risks for cancer that are outside of our control, such as our genetics, gender, and age, there are many lifestyle choices we can make to reduce risk.

First, achieve and maintain a healthy weight. I know! Easier said than done. This is especially important as we get older. Two other choices that can help lower risk for breast cancer, as well as achieve a healthy weight, is to eat a diet rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and get plenty of exercise. Avoiding alcohol or consuming one drink or less per day will also lower your risk of breast cancer. Sometimes making healthy choices can seem overwhelming, especially when life gets stressful. Start small and build on what you are able to accomplish. Perhaps just pick one thing you would like to change and work on that for a few weeks or months.

While breast cancer risk increases as we age and those over age 50 are at increased risk, there are some things that younger women can do in addition to healthy lifestyle choices listed above. Having children and breastfeeding can help protect yourself from breast cancer. When women are pregnant and breastfeeding their hormone levels are different which can reduce risk of breast cancer later on in life. There is a dose response effect as well, the longer you breastfeed, the lower your risk of breast cancer. This may be a real motivation for some women to breastfeed their children or maybe the motivation to keep going when the baby wakes up again in the middle of the night. Remembering that there are benefits for you, mom, that may help you stay strong and not give up.

KOERNER: Breast cancer and how to lower your risk

Unless you have spent all this summer under a rock somewhere, you are aware of how dry this part of the country has been. Ponds I have never seen dry look like parking lots, and some stream and river beds could easily double now as roads. 

Drought affects all living creatures, animals included. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that fall turkey season has been suspended this year because of declining turkey populations over a large swath of the country, not just Kansas. “Declining production” is cited as the reason for that decision. Drought affects this too, as lack of green cover offers less concealment for young chicks and fewer insects for their sustenance. 

Drought is just bad news all around, but dry years can help hunters, fishermen and trappers.

Drought will obviously affect waterfowl hunting. Most of the McPherson Valley Wetlands near McPherson are dry, and the wetlands just outside Inman have water in perhaps only one-half the pools. There are several ponds along the Kansas 61 four-lane highway that are completely dry, as are many other ponds in this part of the state. 

Many of these ponds and water impoundments are favored by ducks and geese over the next couple months, so now all those birds will have to find other water in farm ponds, stock ponds and sand pits, for example. There is just as much feed around for them this year as any year, so that will probably mean just as many ducks and geese will stop here for a spell as on any year. 

Putting two-and-two together means if you can get permission to hunt some of those otherwise overlooked and out-of-sight spots, the waterfowl hunting for you this year may be tremendous.

Whether big game, small game, winged or four-footed, furbearers or predators, all critters need water, and even though dry spells don’t affect critter movement patterns much, it’s a no-brainer that more wildlife will be watering at the ponds, creeks and rivers that still hold water. 

Deer stands placed near water are good bets near dawn and dusk on any year, but this season hunting near a water source may be especially productive as more deer will be drinking from those spots. 

If your hunting property doesn’t have water on it, try hanging a stand or putting up a blind as close as you can get to the nearest water. Stock tanks and windmill tanks will probably be more popular watering spots this season for wildlife too, so, if possible, find some cover within shooting range of them. 

In short, this year water sources may be as big a draw as anything, so place you deer stands and blinds accordingly.

Although the properties I trap rarely have ponds on them, most predator trappers agree that pond dams are good spots to set traps for bobcats and coyotes, as they also need water and like to nose around on the dams. All pasture ponds will have cattle trails leading to and around them, and predators use those same trails too. 

Following the same thinking, since some of those ponds are dry this year, the ones still holding water might be better trap sites this year than usual, as more predators and furbearers will be traveling there to drink. Deep holes in creeks and rivers that still have water will also see more wildlife traffic than normal.

I questioned a friend about&nbsp;this who is a tremendous fisherman and he confirmed my assessment. He also added that ice fishing is often great on years when water levels are low, as fish are easier to locate beneath the ice.

Yes, it’s dry again and we need good soaking rains. It seems that all the native Kansans I know have long ago made peace with our state's propensity to stay dry, but as a Kansas transplant, I still struggle with that. 

Nelson Mandela said “Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.” I guess we can furnish the work, bread and salt, but only God can send the water.

 </figure>Unless you have spent all this summer under a rock somewhere, you are aware of how dry this part of the country has been. Ponds I have never seen dry look like parking lots, and some stream and river beds could easily double now as roads. Drought affects all living creatures, animals included. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that fall turkey season has been suspended this year because of declining turkey populations over a large swath of the country, not just Kansas. “Declining production” is cited as the reason for that decision. Drought affects this too, as lack of green cover offers less concealment for young chicks and fewer insects for their sustenance. Drought is just bad news all around, but dry years can help hunters, fishermen and trappers.Drought will obviously affect waterfowl hunting. Most of the McPherson Valley Wetlands near McPherson are dry, and the wetlands just outside Inman have water in perhaps only one-half the pools. There are several ponds along the Kansas 61 four-lane highway that are completely dry, as are many other ponds in this part of the state. Many of these ponds and water impoundments are favored by ducks and geese over the next couple months, so now all those birds will have to find other water in farm ponds, stock ponds and sand pits, for example. There is just as much feed around for them this year as any year, so that will probably mean just as many ducks and geese will stop here for a spell as on any year. Putting two-and-two together means if you can get permission to hunt some of those otherwise overlooked and out-of-sight spots, the waterfowl hunting for you this year may be tremendous.Whether big game, small game, winged or four-footed, furbearers or predators, all critters need water, and even though dry spells don’t affect critter movement patterns much, it’s a no-brainer that more wildlife will be watering at the ponds, creeks and rivers that still hold water. Deer stands placed near water are good bets near dawn and dusk on any year, but this season hunting near a water source may be especially productive as more deer will be drinking from those spots. If your hunting property doesn’t have water on it, try hanging a stand or putting up a blind as close as you can get to the nearest water. Stock tanks and windmill tanks will probably be more popular watering spots this season for wildlife too, so, if possible, find some cover within shooting range of them. In short, this year water sources may be as big a draw as anything, so place you deer stands and blinds accordingly.Although the properties I trap rarely have ponds on them, most predator trappers agree that pond dams are good spots to set traps for bobcats and coyotes, as they also need water and like to nose around on the dams. All pasture ponds will have cattle trails leading to and around them, and predators use those same trails too. Following the same thinking, since some of those ponds are dry this year, the ones still holding water might be better trap sites this year than usual, as more predators and furbearers will be traveling there to drink. Deep holes in creeks and rivers that still have water will also see more wildlife traffic than normal. The issue of foreign investment and land purchases in Kansas is once again in the news. 

Last week, Attorney General Kris Kobach called on the Kansas Legislature to restrict the ability of foreign individuals and corporations to purchase or lease large parcels of land in Kansas. Kobach warned that failure to address this issue posed a threat to national security and the food supply chain.

This issue is not new to Kansas, nor to other states. Last year, the Kansas Legislature considered, but did not act on, multiple bills that contained language limiting foreign control of Kansas land, joining more than 30 other states that considered similar legislation. This phenomenon raises significant questions about property rights, national security, and the real estate market.

Some government officials have expressed concerns that allowing foreign citizens and corporations to buy large parcels of land gives them an undue influence over our politics and economy.Geopolitical tensions between China and the United States have also certainly played a role in the recent implementation of land purchase and lease restrictions. For example, proponents of these policies argue that real estate holdings provide a strategic footprint in a country or state, which may pose a national security threat. This argument often involves concerns over potential spying. These heightened political disputes, including the Chinese balloon incident earlier this year, have led to limiting Chinese investment in the name of protecting national interest.Another factor contributing to support for these restrictions is worry over how foreign investment will impact local property markets.<figure>

 </figure>Foreign investors have the ability to invest heavily in real estate, driving up property prices. This could lead to a scarcity of affordable land for local residents. Kobach echoed these concerns arguing that farmers would have to compete in local markets where foreign investment has distorted land value.While restricting land purchases by foreign interests may address concerns related to national security and rising property prices, it also raises important questions about property rights and fairness.The American Civil Liberties Union has already promised to fight state restrictions on the ability of foreign nationals living and working in the states to purchase land. They have argued that these bills are a discriminatory overreach by state governments.Further, other groups, including those tied to agricultural interests, have cautioned state lawmakers about growing government involvement in the free market.Opponents of these restrictions also caution that they play into unfounded, xenophobic fears, which divide our already fractured political landscape.
