HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team picked up a second-consecutive win over a ranked opponent on Friday (March 14), defeating No. 29 Central Oklahoma 4-3 in extra innings. The Tigers improve to 14-5 overall and 9-1 in MIAA contests, while the Bronchos dip to 16-6 on the year and 6-4 in league games.

Four days after ending a 13-2 win over No. 25 Missouri Southern with a walk-off grand slam, Trey DeGarmo again delivered in the clutch, punching an RBI single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Tigers the win.

The contest started off as a pitcher's duel between FHSU's Ty Riley and UCO's Brett Pense. The starters combined to scatter six hits and just two earned runs across 13 innings of work.

Fort Hays State collected its first hits in the bottom of the third when Cesar Saavedra and Zane Knox both reached with two-out singles, but Pense got out of the jam with a flyout. Riley did not allow a hit until the fourth inning when UCO scored first on a bases-loaded balk.

The Tigers answered right back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. Elliott Herrmann led off with a single before DeGarmo reached on a throwing error. Cooper Howell plated the tying run with an RBI groundout before Brady Kreutzer crushed a 1-2 pitch off the wall in left field, driving in the go-ahead run with a double.

Riley hit two batters with a pitch over the next two frames but retired the other six batters he faced, turning a 2-1 lead over to the bullpen in the seventh.

After giving up the lead, Pense retired nine in a row and seemed to be cruising before Jamison Armstrong sent an 0-1 pitch sailing over the fence in right field, putting the Tigers in front 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

Kaleb Carpenter was first out of the bullpen for FHSU, allowing one hit in the seventh before giving up two singles in the top of the eighth. Brandon Chavez came on to get out of inning with back-to-back strikeouts, allowing FHSU to go to the ninth up by two.

Central Oklahoma managed to tie things up in the top of the ninth with two runs on three hits, but Chavez got out of the inning with runners on the corners with his fourth strikeout of the game.

Fort Hays State was able to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but a diving stop and perfect throw from the UCO third baseman sent things to extra innings.

Chavez continued to deal, striking out the side in the 10th to give FHSU a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the inning. Knox worked a leadoff walk on seven pitches before Derek Woolwine laid down a sacrifice bunt. The Bronchos chose to intentionally walk Herrmann, bringing DeGarmo to the plate. The senior swung at the first pitch, sending it past a diving short stop and allowing Knox to score from second.

Riley did not factor into the decision after allowing one run on one hit and three walks over 6.0 innings of work, striking out four. Carpenter allowed three hits but did not give up a run in 1.1 innings of relief, while Chavez (3-0) picked up the win after striking out seven batters over 2.2 innings of work. Chavez allowed two runs on three hits and did not walk a batter.

UCO's Pense finished with a line of four strikeouts, five hits, zero walks and three runs (one earned) over 7.0 innings of work.

INDIANAPOLIS - Fort Hays State's Tereus Henry will finish a storied career tomorrow as an All-American after the senior picked up a pair of wins on day one of the 2025 NCAA Division II Championships Friday (March 14), earning him a spot in the semifinals and a guaranteed top six finish.

Henry, the No. 8 seed in the 197-pound bracket, opened the day against John Parker-Wilson of Newberry in the round of 16. Neither wrestler scored in the opening period before Parker-Wilson maintained control for the entire two minutes of the second period. Henry started the third period on top but gave up an escape 40 seconds in to fall behind 1-0. The El Paso, Texas native was able to take the lead with 37 seconds to go, securing a takedown and wiping out the ride time point to win 3-2.

Henry then drew the top overall seed Dominic Murphy of St. Cloud State in the quarterfinals, who entered the match 25-0 on the year. After a scoreless opening three minutes both wrestlers managed quick escapes in the second and third periods. Murphy then took a 4-1 lead with a takedown 30 seconds into the final period, but Henry was able to escape 15 seconds later to pull within 4-2.

Henry then struck with a single-leg attack with about one minute remaining, securing the go-ahead takedown with 42 seconds on the clock. Murphy nearly escaped soon after, but a mat return with 30 seconds to go brought the wrestlers out of bounds. Henry was then able to hang on for the final 25 seconds, including a late scrum with five seconds left that nearly saw a reversal, but Henry was able to hold on for the 5-4 decision.

The win avenged a loss to Murphy in last year's national quarterfinals. Henry is now 3-1 against Murphy in his career.

Now a two-time All-American, Henry will face off with long-time rival Jackson Kinsella of Nebraska-Kearney in the semifinals Saturday morning (March 15) beginning at 9 a.m. (10 a.m. ET). Henry and Kinsella have faced off eight times over the last three years, with each competitor winning four times. Kinsella is 2-0 in the matchup this season, including a late win in the regional final two weeks ago.

Should Henry reach the final, he would face off with either No. 3 seed Derek Blubaugh of UIndy or No. 7 seed Nicholas Johnson of Glenville St. Henry is 0-4 all-time against Blubaugh and 0-1 against Johnson.

Competing at his first national competition, Matthew Rodriguez finished the day 0-2 in the 184-pound bracket. The sophomore drew a pigtail match against Kyler Pickard of Belmont Abbey, who used two takedowns to secure a 7-2 decision. Rodriguez then fell to UNK's Jacari Deal for a fourth time this season via a 14-4 major decision.

The Tigers are currently in a tie for 31st thanks to the eight team points Henry has accrued.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Senior Nolan Churchman capped off an outstanding performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday (March 14), securing his seventh career All-American honor with a third-place finish in the men's heptathlon. Churchman set a new school record with a total of 5,534 points over the two-day competition, highlighted by a personal-best mark in the pole vault.

Entering the second day in third place with 3,135 points, Churchman continued to showcase his consistency across the final three events. He opened with an 8.67-second performance in the 60-meter hurdles, earning 820 points. In the pole vault, he cleared a personal-best height of 15-7.00, adding 834 points to his total and finishing first in the event. Churchman then closed out the competition with a time of 2:52.02 in the 1,000-meter run, collecting 745 points to solidify his podium finish.

Churchman's record-breaking performance extends his legacy as one of the most decorated athletes in Fort Hays State track and field history. Not only did he secure his seventh All-American honor, but he also broke his own school record in the heptathlon, further cementing his place among the elite multi-event competitors in Division II.

Churchman also competed in the men's long jump, where he finished 18th overall with a mark of 22-4.50.

The NCAA Indoor Championships conclude tomorrow (March 15), with Jacob Clark competing in the men's pole vault. Clark is looking for his sixth All-American mark.

👟Churchman Claims Seventh All-American Honor, Sets School Record

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The 11th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team muscled its way to an 81-72 win over Southern Nazarene in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 NCAA Division II Central Region Championship Friday afternoon. The Tigers improve to 28-4 with the win and will move on to the regional semifinals on Saturday, while the Crimson Storm conclude their season 23-8 overall.

Southern Nazarene got on the board first before FHSU scored six in a row to take the lead for good. The Crimson Storm kept the deficit at four or lower before Talexa Weeter and Megan Earney&nbsp;drilled back-to-back 3-pointers, pushing the Tiger lead to nine, 18-9. GAC Player of the Year Hannah Giddey answered with six points in the final two minutes, helping SNU close within 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Tiger defense turned things up a notch to start the second quarter, limiting the Crimson Storm to just two field goals on its first 12 attempts of the period. FHSU took advantage on offense, going on an 11-4 run to push the lead to 14, 33-19.The regular season GAC Champions wouldn't go down without a fight, however, with SNU bouncing back with an 11-4 run of its own to pull within 37-30 by halftime.

Olivia Hollenbeck scored two quick layups off passes from Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;to put the Tigers back up double figures before FHSU scored eight in a row over a 69-second span, ballooning the lead as high as 17.

Hollenbeck kept the run going with two free throws before DeGarmo capitalized on a three-point play. Ellie Stearns&nbsp;followed with a 3-pointer from the left wing, giving the Tigers a 49-32 lead and prompting a Crimson Storm timeout.

Fort Hays State again led by 17 with three minutes to play in the third quarter before SNU closed the frame on an 11-5 run, closing within 63-52 with 10 minutes to play.

Hollenbeck opened the final quarter with another basket before Southern Nazarene scored eight in a row, closing within two possessions, 65-60. A layup from Weeter and a traditional 3-point play from DeGarmo helped the Tigers go back up eight with six minutes to play, but SNU responded with the next four points to pull within four, 70-66.

Fort Hays State combined to shoot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line down the stretch to hold on to the win, including six points in the final three minutes from Weeter.

Weeter led the Tigers with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. DeGarmo finished the game just two assists shy of FHSU's first triple double in more than a decade, recording 20 points and season-highs in both rebounds with 16 and assists with eight. She recorded her fourth double-double in seven NCAA Tournament contests in the process.

Hollenbeck totaled 17 points and poked away two steals, while Brooke Loewe recorded 13 points and seven assists.

Three SNU players scored more than 20 points, including 23 from Giddey and 20 each from Umi Otsuka and Braci Nyberg.

The Tigers shot 48.3 percent from the floor (28-of-58), while Southern Nazarene hit 43.8 percent of its shots (28-of-64). FHSU outrebounded the Crimson Storm by nine, 40-31.Fort Hays State will take on either second-seeded Concordia-St. Paul or No. 7 seed Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.

Hammeke was one of 10 players from the Central Region named to the team, which is comprised of five first-team and five second-team selections. Hammeke was one of three players from the MIAA named to the team, which also included Jordan Frison of Pittsburg State and Jacob Hanna of Washburn.

Hammeke adds this honor to his long list of awards at FHSU. He is a five-time All-MIAA selection, including first-team honors each of the last three seasons. He is also a two-time NABC All-District selection. Last week, Hammeke was the Most Outstanding Player of the MIAA Tournament, helping the Tigers win the MIAA Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Hammeke enters the NCAA Tournament averaging 16.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. He has scored in double figures in 30 of the 31 games played by the Tigers this season. The 11th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team will open play in the 2025 NCAA Division II Championship with a matchup against Southern Nazarene in the quarterfinal round of the Central Regional Friday beginning at noon in Pittsburg, Kan.

The Tigers earned the No. 3 seed after turning in a record of 27-4 to date and finishing runner-up at the MIAA Championship tournament, while the Crimson Storm enter the tournament 23-7 on the year after bowing out in the semifinal round of the GAC tournament.

This is the 10th time Fort Hays State has been selected to play in the big dance since moving to Division II in 1991-92, including nine appearances in the bracket over the last 11 years, two more than any other school during that span (Pittsburg State - 7 appearances). Fort Hays State is 8-8 all-time in the tournament, including a 5-2 record in the quarterfinals, a 1-1 record as the No. 3 seed, a 1-0 mark against the No. 6 seed, a 1-1 record against GAC teams, a 2-3 record in neutral site matchups and an 0-1 mark in games played in Pittsburg, Kan.

The Tigers enter the tournament ranked T-11th in the latest WBCA DII Coaches Poll. FHSU is undefeated when ranked 11th in the coaches poll during the DII era (9-0). Southern Nazarene is receiving votes in the latest poll.

Seven teams in the Central Region are ranked in the latest WBCA DII Coaches Poll (four) or receiving votes (three), more than any other region in this year's tournament (West - six teams mentioned).

Fort Hays State's 27 wins this season are fifth-most in the program's 56-year history. The Tigers have now won 25 or more games eight times. FHSU reached 20 wins for the 14th year in a row this season, the longest active streak in Division II and sixth-longest across all NCAA women's basketball.

Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;and Talexa Weeter&nbsp;were both named to the MIAA All-Tournament Team last week. Weeter averaged 24.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the tournament while hitting 60.9 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc (.500). DeGarmo put up 19.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game over three games in KC. She became the all-time leader in scoring and rebounding in tournament history, concluding her career with 227 points (16.2 ppg) and 117 rebounds (8.4 rpg) in 14 games.

Loewe is the school's single-season assists leader with 221 this season, breaking a 34-year old record. Already with 376 assists as a Tiger, the Huxley, Iowa native needs three assists to move into fifth on the all-time assists list at FHSU.

Hollenbeck has scored in double figures 99 times in her 153-game career.

The Tigers rank third as a team in assist/turnover ratio in Division II at 1.37 while also ranking third in assists with 18.8 per game. The Tigers are fourth with a shooting percentage of 46.8 percent while ranking ninth in scoring margin at plus-17.2.

Fort Hays State is 2-0 all-time against Southern Nazarene, including a 45-43 win in the 2022 D2CCA Tip-Off Classic (11/6/22) and an 84-78 victory in 1981 when the school was named Bethany Nazarene (1/21/81). Both of those contests were also neutral-site matchups.

DeGarmo recorded a double-double against the Crimson Storm in 2022, totaling 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Ellie Stearns&nbsp;totaled 11 points in the win.

The Crimson Storm pride themselves on defense, limiting teams to 55.4 points per game (21st in DII). Graduate student Hannah Giddey was named GAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 16.2 points per game (82nd in DII), 10.4 rebounds per game (23rd in DII), 3.7 assists per game (83rd in DII) and 2.7 blocks per game (sixth in DII) alongside a shooting percentage of 51.4 percent (38th in DII).

MANHATTAN – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs' magical postseason
run ended Thursday with a 62-50 loss to the No. 1 seed Moundridge in the quarterfinals of the
2A state tournament in Manhattan.

After a pair of early ties, the last at 6-6, the Wildcats scored
four straight first-quarter points and led 10-6 with two minutes left in the
first half. But TMP came back to take the lead with five straight of their own.
A Hannah Rose field goal and a Teagan Gottschalk three-pointer with less than a
minute remaining in the first half put TMP up 11-10.

But their lead was short-lived, with Moundridge taking a 14-11
lead into the second quarter. 

Moundridge outscored TMP 11-6 to start the second quarter and
led by eight twice at 25-17 and 29-21.

Moundridge extended their lead to eight to open the second
half and then led by 12 with just over five and a half minutes left in the
third quarter.

TMP closed the game to 39-34 with under three minutes to
play in the third quarter on Koenigsman’s second three-pointer. But was a close
of TMP would get the rest of the way.

Moundridge led by eight, at 44-36, at the end of the third
quarter, and slowly pulled away for a 62-50 win over TMP, ending the Monarchs'
season.

Brooke Koenigsman led TMP with 23 points.

The Monarchs finish the year 15-10 as state tournament
qualifiers for the first time since 2018.

Moundridge will take on fellow Heart of American opponent
Inman in the semifinals after the Teutons eliminated Phillipsburg in the second
game 54-35.

Veesaar came off the bench to sink 7 of 11 shots with two 3-pointers for the third-seeded Wildcats (21-11), who move on to play second-seeded and ninth-ranked Texas Tech in a Friday semifinal. No. 1 seed Houston plays No. 4 seed BYU in the other semifinal.

Veesaar scored 10, leading Arizona to a 45-37 advantage at halftime. Dajuan Harris Jr.'s 3-pointer gave No. 6 seed Kansas (21-12) its only lead of the half at 3-2. The Wildcats twice built 12-point leads. KJ Adams made two free throws to get the Jayhawks within 40-37, but Veesaar answered with a 3-pointer and Arizona stayed in front.

Arizona played with a lead until Zeke Mayo hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Kansas to knot the score at 50 with 15:43 remaining. Harris hit a 3-pointer to give the Jayhawks their second lead at 56-54. Rylan Griffen hit a jumper with 8:44 left to put Kansas up for the last time at 63-61. Trey Townsend followed with a dunk and a three-point play and Arizona maintained a lead over the final 7:48.

Towsend had 16 points and Love scored 11 with six assists.

Mayo scored 20 to lead Kansas. Hunter Dickinson totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds. Harris hit four 3-pointers and scored 16.

The Jayhawks wore their blue jerseys in the tournament for the first time since the 2008 title game against the Texas Longhorns. They were the higher seed and wore white in their previous 36 straight games. Kansas — the two seed in '08 — beat the top-seeded Longhorns 84-74.

WASHINGTON (AP) — John Feinstein, one of the country's foremost sports writers and the author of numerous bestselling books, including the groundbreaking “A Season on the Brink” about college basketball coach&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bob-knight-death-indiana-army-college-basketball-c29a7cb601f64e9181564037e8c78758">Bob Knight</a>, died unexpectedly Thursday. Feinstein was 69.

He died of natural causes at his brother's home in McLean, Virginia, according to Robert Feinstein, who said he discovered John's body.

John Feinstein was a full-time reporter for The Washington Post from 1977 to 1991, a commentator for outlets such as ESPN and the Golf Channel and a voter for more than 20 years in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;men's college basketball poll. He remained with the Post as a contributing columnist, and he also hosted satellite radio programs on SiriusXM.

“He was very passionate about things,” Robert Feinstein said in a telephone interview. “People either loved him or hated him — and equally strongly.”

John Feinstein — always a storyteller, whether via the written word or when chatting with other journalists in an arena's media room or press box — was working until the time of his death. He was in Washington this week to cover the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and he&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/03/13/tom-izzo-michigan-state/">filed a column for the Post</a>&nbsp;about Michigan State coach Tom Izzo that appeared online Thursday.

Feinstein was comfortable writing about an array of sports, including golf and tennis, but he was known most for his connection to college basketball because of “A Season on the Brink.” He took a leave of absence from the Post in 1985 to embed with Knight's Indiana team, and the book highlighted the author's flair for the dramatic and ability to capture his subjects' personalities.

Knight's reputation for having a hot temper was well-established by then, and Feinstein brought it to life. Feinstein also effectively portrayed the personal relationships Knight had with his players, which alternated between warm and abusive.

Feinstein went on to write more than 40 books, including “A Good Walk Spoiled” (1995), about professional golf, and “A Civil War” (1996), about the Army-Navy football game. After that book's publication, he worked for many years as a radio commentator for Navy football.

“The Ancient Eight,” about Ivy League football, was published last year. Feinstein also wrote sports novels aimed at younger readers.

In addition to Robert, John Feinstein is survived by his wife, Christine, daughters Brigid and Jayne, and son Danny, as well as a sister, Margaret.

DeGarmo was also a first team All-Region pick last season, making her the second Tiger to earn multiple All-Region accolades in their career (Kate Lehman).The Maize, Kan. native turned in another historic season for the Tigers, earning MIAA Player of the Year recognition for a second-consecutive season. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 23 points and 13 rebounds, Zeke Mayo poured in 24 points, and sixth-seeded Kansas rallied to force overtime before holding off No. 14 seed UCF 98-94 on Wednesday night in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament.

AJ Storr scored a season-high 19 points before fouling out in the closing seconds of OT, and KJ Adams had 15 points and seven boards for the Jayhawks (21-11), who narrowly avoided dropping their conference tourney opener for a second straight year.

Instead, they will face third-seeded Arizona on Thursday night in a rematch of a game Kansas won last weekend.

Jordan Ivy-Curry pulled UCF to within 94-93 when he converted a three-point play with 18.2 seconds to go, and Mayo missed the second of two foul shots at the other end. But UCF big man Moustapha Thiam came up short on a jumper with a chance to tie the game, Kansas got the rebound and Dickinson made the second of two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining.

The Knights' Deebo Coleman was quickly fouled. He made the first foul shot with 0.9 seconds left to make it 96-94, but when he tried to intentionally miss the second to give his team a chance, Coleman failed to hit the rim and the Jayhawks got possession.

David Coit was fouled and added two more free throws for the final margin.

Keyshawn Hall led UCF (17-16) with 25 points. Darius Johnson had 22 before fouling out with a minute to go in regulation.

The Jayhawks blew a 13-point second-half lead, then had to rally once UCF pulled ahead with 7 minutes to go. The teams traded buckets down the stretch, and Ivy-Curry's 3-pointer tied the game 83-all with 14.1 seconds left in regulation.

Kansas tried to set up a winning play, but Adams stepped on the baseline on his drive, giving the Knights a shot. Ivy-Curry raced up the floor and got a decent look from the wing, but his 3-pointer came up well short as time expired.

UCF came a long way from January, when it lost 99-48 to the Jayhawks at home. It had won four of its past six games.

Kansas has gone with a shortened lineup late in the season and it seems to be paying off for the Jayhawks.

Thiam's miss from about 6 feet along the baseline with a few seconds left in overtime would have tied the game.

Three players fouled out of the game. Kansas guard Dajuan Harris also finished with five fouls.

The Jayhawks play Arizona on Thursday night. They beat the Wildcats 83-76 last Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — VJ Edgecombe had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Norchad Omier added 12 points and 14 boards, and seventh-seeded Baylor rolled to a 70-56 victory over No. 10 seed Kansas State in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night.

Jayden Dunn also scored 18 points for the Bears (19-13), who built a 20-point lead early in the second half and then cruised into a quarterfinal matchup with ninth-ranked and No. 2 seed Texas Tech on Thursday night.

David N'Guessan had 20 points and Dug McDaniel finished with 14 for the Wildcats (16-17), who edged Arizona State in the first round but were unable to keep the momentum going against the same team that rallied from 12 down to beat them in January.

The Bears ended the first half Wednesday night on a 9-0 run to take a 41-24 lead into the locker room. Kansas State was just 1 for 12 from beyond the 3-point arc at that point, and veteran forward Coleman Hawkins — who scored 26 points against the Sun Devils — was 0 for 4 from the field and quickly growing frustrated.

Kansas State closed within 58-46 with 8 minutes to go, but Hawkins was whistled for a flagrant foul contesting Edgecombe's dunk, and Jeremy Roach added a basket after his foul shots to help Baylor pull away again.

Kansas State finished 3 of 25 from beyond the arc. Hawkins and McDaniel were each 1 for 6.

Baylor improved to 15-2 when holding an opponent to 70 points or less this season.

Baylor was leading 32-24 with 2:40 left in the first half when it scored the next nine points to take control.

Baylor got 27 points from its bench. Kansas State only got four.

The Bears will play the Red Raiders on Thursday night. Texas Tech beat them 73-59 last month.

The trip was short lived as the Indians fall 51-48.The Saints jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the first six minutes of the game. Hays scored hit a three in the final minute of the first quarter that sparked an 11-0 run that gave the Indians a lead at 13-10 with 4:35 left in the second quarter.Hays pushed their lead up to eight at 21-13 with ninety seconds left before halftime. Aquinas ended those ninety seconds with a 6-2 spurt which included their only field goal of the second quarter as time expired. Hays led 45-43 and 48-46 but each time the Saints answered on their next possession. The final points for Hays came with 2:15 left in the game.
