The TMP-Marian boys had three players named to the All
Mid-Continent League, released Monday by league officials.

Sophomore Ty Schmeidler led the Monarchs in scoring at 12.9
points per game. 

Seniors Noah Dowll of Hoxie, Carson Keith from Hill City and
Norton’s Eli Jones joined him on the first team. 

Jones averaged 17.7 points per game and was a unanimous first-team
pick.

Ellis’ Jaren Frickey was also named on the first team.

averaging 10.3 points per game.

Plainville’s Roy Bright. Jr. and Jayden Morris were also
named to the second team.

TMP Freshman Grant Nehls was the lone freshman to earn all-league
honors. He was named to the third team.

🏀 Three TMP boys named to All-MCL teams

The TMP-Marian girls’ basketball team had two players named to the All Mid-Continent League, released Monday by league officials.

TMP senior Brooke Koenigsman was named one of the unanimous first-team selections.

The complete list of selections is available below.

Koenigsman led the Monarchs, scoring 14.2 points per game. She also led the team in rebounds (5.0) and assists (3.2) per game. 

She was joined on the first team by Norton senior Hallie Brooks, also a unanimous first-team selection.

Brooks averaged 12.2 points per game this season. 

Seniors Emily Bainter from Hoxie and Kayla Jacobs of Phillipsburg were also named on the first team.

Oakley’s Jade Beckman was the only non-senior named to the first team.

TMP’s Gracyn Schipper was named to the second team. 

Ellis’ Isabella Eck and Natalee North were also named to the second team. Along with Russell’s Kelvie Reeves and Oakley freshman Alexa Weiser.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State third baseman Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;has been named the latest MIAA Hitter of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

The senior was crucial in four wins over ranked opponents last week, totaling four home runs, 11 RBI, seven runs and nine hits in 16 at-bats (.563 average). DeGarmo posted a slugging percentage of 1.313 across the four games and reached base at a .611 clip.

The Andover, Kan. native extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the process, clubbing at least one home run in three of the four games this week. DeGarmo wrapped up a series win against No. 25 Missouri Southern with a walk-off grand slam to complete a run-rule victory last Monday before delivering a walk-off single in extra innings of the series opener against Central Oklahoma on Friday.

DeGarmo added three more home runs over the weekend against the Bronchos, including two long balls and five RBI in Saturday's 13-12 win. The reigning MIAA Gold Glove winner was also stellar in the field, recording 10 assists and three putouts on 13 total chances at the hot corner.

The league-leading Tigers have now had three players earn weekly conference honors this season (<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/elliott-herrmann/8422">Elliott Herrmann</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/cade-flaherty/8420">Cade Flaherty</a>), more than any other school in the league.

⚾ FHSU's DeGarmo named MIAA Hitter of the Week

After winning the Western Athletic Conference title in 2024, the Hays High Lady Indians did a re-set of their goals for the 2025 campaign to include bigger and better final destinations.

The Lady Indians, under fifth-year coach Len Melvin, accomplished that in a big way, repeating their 8-0 WAC double round-robin record, but went two steps further, winning their Class 5A sub-state to reach the state championship for the first time in 29 years.

That ultimate goal, taking a 22-0 record to the state tourney, ended prematurely with a heart-breaking 51-48 to private school St. Thomas Acquinas in the quarterfinals of the state tourney on March 12 in Emporia.

However, that final record of 22-1 for the Lady Indians will certainly go down historically as one of the best in program laurels.

That will be the message for Melvin as he sees a solid class of seniors departing, including all-state guard Molly Martin and center Katie Linenberger, who both notched positions on the All-WAC first and second teams.

Shed no tears, though, as Melvin will welcome a talented underclass group back for 2025-26 spearheaded by rising-sophomore Jenna Schmeidler, who was voted WAC Player of the Year by the conference coaches. It is believed that Schmeidler is the first freshman to garner the award.

“We were blessed to have nearly a perfect blend of players in back-to-back-to-back classes,” Melvin said of this year’s Hays squad. “The seniors had suffered with bad losses as freshmen so they remembered what it was like to not be on a winning team and set a standard of hard work that carried through to the younger players.”

Melvin said the unselfishness of this year’s team was one of the key components of the success they enjoyed.

“Nobody cared about who scored the most points, or who played the most minutes,” Melvin said. “We were fortunate to have games where we were able to have a lot of players get significant varsity minutes.”

That’s what happens when your team is winning by big margins as the Indians averaged 64 points a game to their opponents’ 31. In the WAC, the margin was even higher (65.4-27.5), a 37.9-point differential.

“I think we had a running clock in about 16 or 17 games, so our statistics really don’t give a true picture of what some of the players could have done had the clock not been running,” Melvin said. “But, it gave us a chance to play a lot of young players to give them experience.”

While the WAC served as about 40 percent of the team’s schedule, it was the non-conference slate that provided the most challenges.

The Indians defeated Class 3A state semifinalist Colby, 52-35; they toppled private Sunrise Christian Academy, 64-43, and Life Prep Academy (63-56) while battling 4A power Wellington (in state semifinals) before winning a dramatic 74-72 overtime thriller.

“We wanted to be able to take that next step up to be competitive at the highest level, and I think we proved that we were able to do that,” Melvin said.&nbsp;

The joy of going undefeated during the regular season and then qualifying for the state for the first time in nearly three decades saw the enduring heartbreak of a season not fully realized in the team’s loss to St. Thomas Aquinas, which as the No. 8 seed, won the 5A title on Saturday (March 15).

“We got the worst draw possible,” Melvin said of the Indians’ first-round foe. “They’re very good, but we were right there with them. I still think we are as good as them, but just weren’t on that one night. When you’re playing at that level, you have to be able to meet the challenge and we came up just a little short.”

Aquinas was the only team to score more than 50 points against the Indians’ defense.

“The girls take a lot of pride and I think they did such a good job of transitioning from practice into the games,” Melvin said. “The defense has to be our identity because it gives you a chance to compete.”

Melvin, however, said there is little he would change, considering that despite losing a handful of seniors to graduation, he feels good about the returning group.

“We had a number of players in the lower classes who probably could have played varsity, but we wanted to be sure they got minutes on the court and thus we played them on sub-varsity,” Melvin said. “I think we’ve got a great group of players coming back and I’m excited to see where we go from here.”

While the winning margin in the WAC was significant, Melvin said he still has a lot of respect for the other schools.

“A lot of the teams have some really good underclass players and are well-coached,” Melvin said. “We don’t take anything for granted with any opponent and I’m proud that our team did a great job of preparing for each game and not take anybody for granted.”

Melvin loses Martin and Linenberger along with a couple of other veterans, but will return Schmeidler, the do-everything 5–7-point guard who averaged 15.9 points per game while directing traffic for the Indians’ offense. Martin and Linenberger averaged 13.7 and 9.6 points while the returning Winter averaged 6.3 ppg. Schmeidler’s point output was 366 for the season.

In addition to Schmeidler and Martin, the first team all-WAC included juniors Shamari Lewis and Kylie Rhine of Liberal, and K.J. Pinchon of Garden City.

Len Melvin will be the first person to tell you that he expected Jenna Schmeidler to be a good player going into her freshman basketball season at Hays High School.

But what he could not have told you is just how good she would be in her rookie high school campaign.&nbsp;

All Schmeidler did was to come into an already-talented Hays High roster, find her way to the starting point guard position that allowed all-state guard Molly Martin to move to the No. 2 shooting guard spot.

“It opened up a whole new playbook for us,” Melvin said of Schmeidler, who is believed to be the first freshman in the WAC’s 40-plus history to win the award. “She has given us so many options that worked to the talents of the other players.”

Schmeidler proved to be adept both on the offensive and defensive end of the court, averaging 15.9 points per game to lead the team in scoring. She shot 50.6 percent from the field, including 37.6 percent from 3-point range while making 89.9 percent of her free throws on 62-of-69 charities.

“Everybody around just becomes a better player,” Melvin said. “Obviously, there are things where she can get better, but her work ethic is as good as any player I’ve coached. I just wasn’t sure how she would transition to the varsity level as a freshman.”

For Schmeidler, the WAC honor was something of a mild shock if not total surprise.

“I knew I’d been working hard and knew that Molly&nbsp; and others were seniors and very deserving of the award,” Schmeidler said. “So, when Coach (Melvin) told, me I was just grateful that others saw that I had worked hard at playing the game.”

Schmeidler said she gives all the credit to her teammates who share in the award.

“The seniors accepted me from the very beginning,” Schmeidler said. “They took me right in. We were able to change the offense and was able to use my knowledge to help.”

Schmeidler said that her commitment to excelling in the sport started in the sixth grade.

“I knew I wanted to focus on basketball and to work to become the best player I could possibly be,” Schmeidler said. “I spent two hours a day working on all areas of my game. I’m never satisfied with how I play.”

Schmeidler said that her continued improvement will include getting stronger to help her in the drive to the basket and to improve her court vision.

“If I have a bad shooting night, I’ve got to find other ways to contribute,” Schmeidler said. “If I get stronger I can be more effective in protecting the ball on offense.”

Defensively, Schmeidler also sees areas in which she can improve.

“I think I do a pretty good job of playing on-ball defense,” Schmeidler said. “It’s important to have good communication with my teammates so I can help them more. My off-ball defense can get better, too.”

Her plans will include an intensive summer workout program with a personal trainer.

“We’ll work the first 30 minutes on agility drills and then work on all the specific individual drills to get better in all areas,” Schmeidler said. “The biggest thing is to get physically stronger and quicker and be better at seeing the game at a pace that benefits our team.”

While knowing she will miss the graduating seniors from this year’s squad, Schmeidler is excited with her other underclass returnees.

“A lot of them got valuable junior varsity minutes and they were tearing it up at that level,” Schmeidler said. “I think we’re gonna have an awesome team, and we just want to get back to state and improve to work toward a championship.”

Melvin, too, says he likes the roster that will return for 2025-26.

“We’ve got nice pieces in the junior-sophomore classes and it’s been beneficial to stack back-to-back classes with quality players,” Melvin said. “When you have somebody with the skill set of Jenna, you know you’ll have a good chance to win a lot of games.”

🏀 HHS girls dominate All-WAC team, Schmeidler POY

Hays High had three players named to the All-Western Athletic Conference boys basketball team.

Senior Dawson Ruder was named to the first team while senior Cooper Johnson and junior Trey Oakley are second team picks.

The Indians went 13-9 this season, losing to Andover in their 5A Sub-State championship game.&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State is one of 32 teams selected for the 2025&nbsp;National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and will open at Oklahoma State on Tuesday, March 18 at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Wichita State (19-14) will make its 14th&nbsp;appearance in the NIT and first since 2019. Out of the Big 12 Conference, Oklahoma State finished the season at 15-17. Wichita State is 11-32 all time against the Cowboys with the two teams splitting each of the last four meetings.

Wichita State is 11-12 all time in the NIT which includes a 2011 NIT championship.

The winner of Wichita State and No. 4 seed Oklahoma State will advance to play the winner of No. 1 SMU and Northern Iowa on March 22-23.

First round play is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18 and 19, with the second round playing March 22 and 23. MANHATTAN, Kan. - Following its second straight 26-win season, Kansas State women's basketball was rewarded with an at-large bid and a five-seed in the Spokane 4 Regional in the 2025 NCAA Tournament during Sunday night's NCAA Women's Basketball Selection Show on ESPN. This is the program's 19th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and the sixth under the direction of head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/jeff-mittie/2524">Jeff Mittie</a>.

K-State (26-7, 13-5 Big 12) was chosen as a No. 5 seed in the Spokane 4 regional and will be opposed by No. 12 seed Fairfield (28-4, 19-1 MAAC). The game will be played on Friday with a time and broadcast information announced on Monday. LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The Kansas Jayhawks have secured the No. 7 seed in the West Region for the 2025 NCAA Tournament, marking their 52nd all-time appearance. They are set to face the No. 10 seed Arkansas Razorbacks on March 20 in Providence, Rhode Island.

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team strengthened its hold on the top spot in the MIAA standings with a 7-4 victory over Central Oklahoma on Sunday at Larks Park. The Tigers (16-5, 11-1 MIAA) rode a six-run third inning and solid bullpen work to secure their second straight win over the Bronchos (16-8, 6-6 MIAA).

Fort Hays State fell behind early after Central Oklahoma scratched across a run in the top of the first on a fielder's choice. The Tigers threatened in the bottom half with a two-out single from Derek Woolwine, but UCO's Brady Gilmore escaped the frame unscathed.

The third inning proved to be the difference-maker for FHSU. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;led off the frame with a solo home run to left field, tying the game at 1-1. After a single from Woolwine, Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;crushed a two-run homer to left, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;followed immediately with a solo shot of his own, making it back-to-back home runs and extending the lead to 4-1. Cooper Howell&nbsp;ripped an RBI double to left center, bringing home another run before Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;capped off the six-run explosion with an RBI double of his own to make it 6-1.

UCO battled back in the fifth when Caden Robertson delivered a three-run home run to left center, trimming the FHSU lead to 6-4. However, Paul Panduro&nbsp;settled in to finish the inning, and the Tigers' bullpen shut the door from there.

Kreutzer added an insurance run in the eighth inning, sending a solo home run over the left-center fence to push the lead to 7-4.

Panduro (2-1) earned the win after tossing 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits while striking out seven. Brett Jacobs&nbsp;entered in the seventh and provided 1.2 scoreless innings before Brandon Chavez&nbsp;closed things out in the ninth, recording his sixth save of the season.

FHSU finished with 11 hits, led by two-hit performances from Saavedra, Herrmann, DeGarmo, and Kreutzer. Robertson paced Central Oklahoma with three hits and three RBIs.

The Tigers head to Topeka to face Washburn Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at Falley Field. They then head to Pittsburg for a three-game series in Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 16-6 overall on the season with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Mary on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 16). The Tigers won by scores of 12-4 and 13-2, both in five innings. The Marauders fell to 7-16 overall for the season.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 12, Mary 4 Fort Hays State jumped out to a big lead with a five-run first inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;drew a bases loaded walk for the first run,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/8182">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;singled home a pair of runs, and then&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/8187">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/paige-thexton/8200">Paige Thexton</a>&nbsp;each had RBI doubles.

Mary picked up its only run on a solo home run in the second. The Tigers had a total of 16 hits and everyone in the starting lineup recorded a hit.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 13, Mary 2 Mary took a 1-0 lead in the second contest with an RBI single in the first inning, but the Tigers finally broke through in the third with an RBI double by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/jules-bosco/8199">Jules Bosco</a>&nbsp;to tie the game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;followed with RBI singles to put the Tigers on top 3-1.

The Tigers pulled away quickly with a 10-run fourth to take the lead to 13-1. INDANAPOLIS - Fort Hays State's Tereus Henry&nbsp;closed his collegiate career as a national runner-up at 197 pounds on Saturday (Mar. 15) at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship. Henry closed his career with a record of 137-39, earning All-America status for the second time in his career.

Henry was the first Tiger to reach the national title bout since Jon Inman in 2017 and is just the eighth to do so during FHSU's NCAA Division II era. He faced Derek Blubaugh from the University of Indianapolis, the defending national champion. Blubaugh took the title match by a 5-1 decision, highlighted with a takedown in the first period. Both wrestlers notched escapes before Blubaugh added his final point with riding time. Blubaugh finished with back-to-back national titles and reached the finals for the fourth-straight year. He was one opponent Henry never could beat, finishing 0-5 in his collegiate career against the two-time champ.

Henry reached the championship bout thanks to a 4-2 decision against long-time rival Jackson Kinsella of Nebraska-Kearney. Both competitors were hit with early stall warnings in the first period, prompting more action from the duo over the final five minutes. Both managed quick escapes in the second and third periods, leaving the score tied at 1-1 down the stretch. The El Paso, Texas native took control of the match with a takedown after a single leg attack near the edge of the mat. Kinsella tried to force the action out of bounds, but Henry was able to secure the three points before going outside the circle.

The Loper quickly escaped after action resumed in the center of the mat, but Henry was able to fend off all late attacks to secure the 4-2 decision. It was Henry's ninth career bout against Kinsella, with Henry finishing with a 5-4 record against the Loper.

With Henry's 15 points generated for the tournament, FHSU finished 27th in the team standings. Nebraska-Kearney ran away with the team title by over 50 points.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – A fast start by Southwest Minnesota State in the NCAA Central Regional Semifinals on Saturday ultimately was too much for Fort Hays State to overcome. The No. 11 ranked Tigers fell to the No. 18 ranked Mustangs by a score of 77-65, seeing their season end with a record of 28-5. The Mustangs moved on to Monday's regional championship game with a record of 28-4.

The Mustangs raced out to an 11-2 lead just over three minutes into the game and the Tigers were left trying to play catch up all night. The 3-point shot was a huge factor for Southwest Minnesota's success as they were 6-of-12 beyond the arc in the first half. The Tigers found themselves in an 11-point hole twice in the first quarter before trimming the lead to eight by the end of the first frame. FHSU had the margin down to four about midway through the second quarter, but SMSU took its lead back to 10 points by halftime.

An 11-3 run by the Tigers for about a four-minute stretch in the third quarter all of the sudden had the Mustang lead down to just two. The Tigers trimmed the lead to two twice more, but could never get over the hump as the Mustangs went into the fourth quarter with a 56-52 lead.

The Tigers went scoreless for about the first four and a half minutes of the fourth quarter and saw the Mustangs open the quarter on a 9-0 run to get the lead out to 13. Eventually they led by 14 before the final margin was 12.Three-point shooting was a big struggle for the Tigers, going just 2-of-16 beyond the arc. Both makes were by Talexa Weeter, who had 21 points and seven rebounds. FHSU had 60 of its 65 points from its top three scorers on the season, while the rest of the squad was held to just five points.

The result closed the careers of two of the most decorated players in FHSU program history. Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;finished with a team-best 22 points and nine rebounds, while Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;added 17 points and six rebounds. DeGarmo finished her career with 2,299 points, 1,248 rebounds, 408 assists, and 236 steals. She is the all-time leader in rebounds and second-leading scorer. Hollenbeck moved to third on the career scoring list in the game and finished with 1,933 points, 753 rebounds, 223 blocks, and 204 steals. She passed Kate Lehman on the scoring list and joined DeGarmo as one of the top three scorers in program hist

Bri Stoltzman, the NSIC Player of the Year, led the Mustangs with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Audrey Swanson also had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Natalie Nielsen also reached double figures in scoring with 11.

🏀 Fast start helps Mustangs knock off Tigers in NCAA Regional semifinal

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – On the final day of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, Fort Hays State's&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;battled through a competitive men's pole vault field, securing a 13th-place finish with a clearance of 16-10.25.

Clark, competing in his fourth NCAA Indoor Championship, entered the meet with hopes of capturing his sixth career All-American honor. He cleared the opening heights with confidence, but as the bar rose, so did the intensity of the competition. After successfully vaulting over 16-10.25, he narrowly missed at higher heights, ending his championship run just outside the All-America standings.

Though short of his ultimate goal, Clark's performance capped off an impressive season in which he consistently ranked among the top vaulters in Division II. With the conclusion of the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, the Fort Hays State men's team finished with six points, placing 30th in the overall team standings.

With the indoor season now concluded, the Tigers will turn their focus to the outdoor season, where they will look to build on this experience and make another push for national recognition.

HAYS, Kan. – In a high-scoring battle at Larks Park, Fort Hays State edged out Central Oklahoma 13-12 on Saturday in a game that featured explosive innings from both teams. The Tigers' offense delivered timely hits, while the bullpen held off a late push from the Bronchos to secure the victory.

Central Oklahoma wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Grant Randall launched a solo home run to left field in the first at-bat of the game. Fort Hays State was kept off the board in the bottom half, but the Tigers' bats came alive in the second inning.

Trey DeGarmo evened the score with a solo home run to left-center, setting the stage for a big inning. After Luis Ayala&nbsp;singled up the middle, Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;delivered a two-run blast to left center, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, Zane Knox&nbsp;added to the onslaught with a two-run homer of his own, making it a 5-1 advantage. Fort Hays State tacked on another run in the third when Cooper Howell&nbsp;drove in Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;with an RBI single, extending the lead to 6-1.

The Bronchos roared back in the fourth with a seven-run explosion. Orlando Gonzalez started the rally with a two-run homer, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Davan Brady followed with a two-run shot of his own, bringing Central Oklahoma within one. Garrett Long kept the momentum going with a solo homer to right center, tying the game at 6-6. After a base hit from Randall, Caden Robertson crushed a two-run homer to center field, capping the big inning and giving the Bronchos an 8-6 lead.

The Tigers responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, DeGarmo launched his second home run of the game, a three-run blast to left, putting Fort Hays State back on top 9-8.Central Oklahoma pushed across a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Robertson, tying the game at 9-9. However, the Tigers took control in the bottom half, capitalizing on a clutch single from Howell to plate four runs and grab a 13-9 lead.

Brady continued his monster day for the Bronchos in the seventh, blasting a two-run homer to center to trim the deficit to 13-11. In the eighth, Ty Chapman homered to left center, making it a one-run game at 13-12.
