LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kansas State forward Temira Poindexter missed her first six shots against Kentucky in the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament. She finished by hitting eight 3-pointers, and the last one sent the visiting Wildcats to the Sweet 16.

Poindexter made a&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/MarchMadnessWBB/status/1903901655135088762">corner 3 with 56 seconds</a>&nbsp;left in overtime, and Kansas State's defense did the rest to preserve an 80-79 victory Sunday on Kentucky's home court.

“In those moments, I do get down on myself,” Poindexter said. “My teammates come in and have my back and tell me to keep shooting so it really lifts me up and gives me confidence.”

Fifth-seeded Kansas State (28-7) dodged four misses by No. 4 seed Kentucky (23-8) in the closing seconds to advance to face either JuJu Watkins and top-seeded Southern California or No. 9 seed Mississippi State in a regional semifinal in Spokane, Washington.

Kentucky star Georgia Amoore missed a jumper with 21 seconds left, a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining and then a baseline layup at the buzzer. Amelia Haslett also missed a 3 that would have put Kentucky ahead at Rupp Arena.

“As soon as I caught it, I realized how open I was and it’s up to fate at that point,” Amoore said about her final attempt.

Poindexter finished 8 of 15 beyond the arc to score 24 points.

“Give her credit. She knocked down some very tough shots and we had a couple of situations where we had miscommunication and she got free,” Kentucky coach Kenny Brooks said.

Serena Sundell added 19 points and 14 assists for Kansas State, and her turnaround jumper with 8 seconds left forced overtime. Ayoka Lee scored 16.

Clara Strack led Kentucky with 22 points. Amoore scored 18 points on 7-of-23 shooting.

Amoore hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Kentucky a 69-67 lead with 32 seconds left in regulation. After Sundell's basket, Kentucky's Dazia Lawrence could not get a clean look before time expired.

There were 21 lead changes, seven in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“You go the last ten minutes of the game and there were just huge shots by both teams and different players,” Kansas State coach Jeff Mittie said. “I’m really proud of our group to to be down five and to need to really dig deep defensively and make plays, but also very little margin for the other end.”

Kansas State: Sundell had 11 points in the first quarter to steady the visiting Wildcats after Kentucky jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. She also became the school's career assist leader.

Kentucky: The host Wildcats built small leads but could never extend their advantage to double digits.

Teonni Key rebounded her own missed jumper to make a layup that gave Kentucky a 66-61 lead with 2:11 to play. Kansas State responded with 3-pointers by Jaelyn Glenn and then Poindexter in a 40-second span. Key finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Kentucky came in averaging seven blocks per game, but it was Kansas State denying shots with 13 blocks, including two on 3-point attempts in the second quarter. Those fueled a 12-3 run that propelled Kansas State to a 33-31 halftime lead.

Kansas State will have to wait until late Monday night to learn its regional semifinal opponent. Kentucky will have to replace Amoore, a second-team All-American, and Lawrence, a key contributor and another transfer.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Penn State’s Carter Starocci won an unprecedented fifth national title and Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Hendrickson stunned Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson 5-4 in the heavyweight final Saturday night at the NCAA men’s wrestling championships with President Donald Trump in attendance.

Hendrickson, a transfer from Air Force, trailed in the last match of the evening until scoring on a takedown in the final minute — the only takedown Steveson allowed all season.

Hendrickson saluted Trump after his victory. With a United States flag draped over his shoulders, he then walked over and shook Trump’s hand and hugged him as part of his celebration. Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-ncaa-wrestling-championships-sports-trips-8f68a03e4c6926ef2e159e67d70a8466">attended the event, just as he did as a candidate in 2023</a>&nbsp;when the tournament was in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“It’s bigger than worlds, Olympics, anything,” an emotional Hendrickson said moments after the win.

Minnesota’s Steveson, seeking his third national title, was on a 70-match win streak. The 2021 and 2022 national champion retired at the end of the 2022 event, but returned this year after stints in World Wrestling Entertainment and the National Football League.

Steveson entered the third period with a 3-2 lead before&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NCAAWrestling/status/1903634014193287509" target="_blank">giving up the takedown with about 20 seconds remaining</a>. The crowd erupted when Hendrickson scored and as time expired.

Starocci’s Nittany Lions claimed their third four-peat, running away from the field to claim their 12th men’s Division I men’s wrestling national title under coach Cael Sanderson.

Starocci defeated Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen 4-3 in the 184-pound final. Keckeisen was the defending champion in the class.

“It means a lot to me, but as for me — I never want to down play the moment — but I mean, it’s always cool, but one thing that Coach Cael really instills in us, this is all just preparation for the next thing.”

Penn State, just the second program to have 10 All-Americans in one season, scored 177 points to top its record from last year. The Nittany Lions picked up another championship when Mitchell Mesenbrink won the 165 final 8-2 over Iowa’s Michael Caliendo. Mesenbrink finished unbeaten this season after losing in the national final a year ago.

Nebraska finished second with 117 points and closed out it’s best tournament ever with Ridge Lovett winning at 149 and Antrell Taylor at 157. Oklahoma State finished third with 102.5 points and Iowa was fourth with 81.

North Carolina State freshman Vincent Robinson defeated Oklahoma State’s Troy Spratley 2-1 at 125, and Illinois’ Lucas Byrd defeated Iowa’s Drake Ayala 3-2 at 133.

At 141, Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Nebraska’s Brock Hardy 12-9 and claim his second straight national title. Hardy was the No. 1 seed.

At 149, Lovett toppled the defending champion, Virginia Tech’s Caleb Henson, 1-0. Lovett became the first Cornhusker national champion since Jordan Burroughs in 2011.

Nebraska’s Taylor hung on to defeat Purdue’s Joey Blaze 4-2.

Oklahoma State’s Dean Hamiti defeated Missouri’s Keegan O’Toole 4-1 in overtime to win at 174. O’Toole, the national champ at 165 in 2022 and 2023, challenged a takedown during regulation that was reversed and allowed him to get to overtime. In sudden victory, another takedown was challenged, but this time, it was upheld, and Hamiti celebrated with first-year coach David Taylor.

Iowa’s Stephen Buchanan defeated Penn State’s Josh Barr 5-2 in the 197 final. He’s been an All-American at Wyoming, Oklahoma and now Iowa.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – No. 27 Fort Hays State dropped a tough road contest against Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-1 in an MIAA matchup at Al Ortolani Field. The Tigers (18-6, 13-2 MIAA) took an early lead in the fourth inning, but a three-run sixth inning propelled the Gorillas (18-6, 8-6 MIAA) to victory. The result snapped a six-game win streak for the Tigers.

Both teams struggled to generate offense early, as starters Paul Panduro&nbsp;and Maddox Thornton&nbsp;worked through the first three innings without allowing a run. Fort Hays State finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;singled up the middle with one out before Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;followed with a single of his own to right-center. After a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Cooper Howell&nbsp;lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Herrmann home for the first run of the game.

Pittsburg State threatened in the bottom half of the inning but was turned away by Panduro. The right-hander worked efficiently through five innings, but the Gorillas finally broke through in the sixth. A two-out rally started with a walk to Drew Bugner, followed by another free pass to Hayden Dyer. Austin Warkins then delivered an RBI single to right, tying the game at 1-1. Moments later, Jake Skaggs lined a two-run double into the gap, scoring both Dyer and Warkins to give the Gorillas a 3-1 lead.

The Tigers looked for an answer in the seventh, but Pittsburg State's defense turned a key double play to keep FHSU off the board. The Gorillas added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when Bugner singled to left and later came around to score on an error.

Spencer Maley&nbsp;took the mound for Fort Hays State in the eighth, but Pittsburg State managed to tack on one more run.&nbsp;Fort Hays State had one final chance in the ninth, but Pittsburg State closer Cooper Crouch shut the door with a clean inning.

The Tigers were limited to just seven hits on the day, with Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;leading the way at 2-for-4, including a stolen base. Herrmann, DeGarmo, Howell, Ayala, and Woolwine each added a hit, but FHSU struggled to find timely offense.

Panduro, a Pittsburg State transfer, took the loss after going 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with five walks and one strikeout. Brett Jacobs&nbsp;and Maley combined for 2 1/3 innings in relief, striking out three. Thornton&nbsp;earned the win for Pittsburg State, tossing eight innings of one-run ball while scattering seven hits and striking out four.

NEW YORK (AP) —George Foreman, the fearsome heavyweight who lost the “Rumble in the Jungle” to Muhammad Ali before his inspiring second act as a 45-year-old champion and a successful businessman, died Friday night. He was 76.

Foreman's family&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DHe5UtIJ4IQ/" target="_blank">announced his death on social media</a>.

“A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand- and great-grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility and purpose," his family wrote.

A native Texan, Foreman began his boxing career as an Olympic gold medalist who inspired fear as he climbed to the peak of the heavyweight division by stopping Joe Frazier in 1973. His formidable aura evaporated only a year later when Ali pulled off one of the most audacious victories in boxing history in Zaire, baiting and taunting Foreman into losing his belt in one of the greatest fights ever staged.

Foreman left the sport a few years later, but returned after a 10-year absence and a self-described religious awakening.

He then pulled off one of the most spectacular knockouts in boxing history in 1994, flooring Michael Moorer — 19 years his junior — with one perfect combination to claim Moorer's two heavyweight belts.

Foreman's transformation into an inspirational figure was complete, and he fought only four more times before moving onto his next career as a genial businessman, pitchman and occasional actor.

He was best known as the face of the George Foreman Grill, a rudimentary cooking machine which sold more than 100 million units and made him much wealthier than his sport ever did.

PITTSBURG, Kan. - A trio of Brady Kreutzer home runs helped the 27th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team rally to defeat Pittsburg State in extra innings on Friday at Al Ortolani Field, with the Tigers winning 9-8 in 10 innings. The MIAA-leading Tigers improved to 18-5 overall and 13-1 in league play after their sixth-straight win, while the Gorillas dip to 17-6 on the year and 7-6 in conference action.

Fort Hays State had an uphill climb all afternoon after the Gorillas jumped in front with five runs in the first two innings. The Tigers broke through with two runs in the top of the third after Jamison Armstrong led off with a single. Kreutzer drilled his first home run of the day in the next inning to pull the Tigers within 5-3 before Pittsburg State plated another run in the home half of the fifth. Ty Riley completed his outing with a scoreless sixth inning before Kaleb Carpenter came on to record a pair of scoreless innings of relief, stranding runners in scoring position each time. Woolwine added another Tiger home run in the top of the seventh, closing the gap to one run, 6-5.

A pair of free bases opened the top of the eighth before Tony Moore delivered a pinch-hit double into the right-field corner, giving Fort Hays State its first lead of the day at 7-6. It was Moore's first at bat in three weeks after suffering an injury in the series against Missouri Western. Zane Knox later added another run with a two-out single to right, giving FHSU an 8-6 advantage.

Brandon Chavez opened the ninth inning with a strikeout before the Gorillas rattled off a single, a triple and a sacrifice fly to even the score 8-8, sending things to extra innings. Kreutzer clubbed his third home run of the game with one out in the 10th, sending an 0-1 pitch soaring over the wall in left center. Chavez (4-0) then locked down the win with a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.

Kreutzer's three home run performance is the most in a game for the Tigers since 2012 when Ryan Busboom hit three against Bethany (4/24/12) and is the most by a Tiger against a Division II team since Kyle Stacken did so against Metro State in 2010 (3/23/2010). It is the 12th time a Division II player has accumulated three home runs in a game this season and just the second-such performance by an MIAA player on the year.

Kreutzer was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs, while DeGarmo also collected three of FHSU's 16 base hits. Knox, Woolwine and Cesar Saavedra all had two hits on the day, with Woolwine scoring twice and Moore plating two RBI.

Riley ate up six innings on the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits and six walks while striking out six batters. Carpenter retired six of the eight batters he faced over two scoreless frames, allowing a pair of doubles while striking out one batter. Chavez struck out three batters in 2.0 innings of work while allowing two runs on three hits.

Fort Hays State is now 2-0 in extra inning matchups this season.

The Tigers will look to secure the series victory on Saturday (March 22) when the teams face off again in Pittsburg beginning at 2 p.m.

⚾ Kreutzer's three-homer day helps No. 27 Tigers rally past Gorillas

SPRING HILL, Kan. - Shayla Nordlund earned her second top five finish of the season this week (March 20-21) at the Konzem Invitational, helping the Fort Hays State women's golf team to a seventh-place finish. Rockhurst hosted the event at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course, a par-72, 5,685-yard layout.

The Tigers turned in team scores of 354 in round one and 363 in round two, finishing the week at 141-over, 28 shots clear of the team that finished in eighth place.

Nordlund was in first place after day one, carding a two-over 74 on Thursday to sit atop the 59-player field. Conditions worsened on Friday, with high sustained winds elevating the field average by nearly two strokes. The freshman finished the week with a 13-over 85, finishing the week at 15-over which was five strokes off the lead. Nordlund tied for third in the field with four birdies while ranking 10th with 18 pars across the 36 holes.

Competing as an individual, Abbie Norris turned in rounds of 89 and 84 to finish in a tie for 25th place. Norris posted the lowest round on the team on Friday. She ranked eighth in the field with three birdies on the week.

Hayden York finished in a tie for 36th at 36-over after firing rounds of 88 and 92, while Kiley Maier placed 42nd with rounds of 92 and 93 (41-over). Emma Walz turned in scores of 100 and 93 to finish in 47th place, while Avery Blasi withdrew from the event and was unable to post a final score.

Rockhurst won the event at 62-over par after rounds of 314 and 324, one shot in front of Washburn (322-317, 63-over). Keira Ronsick of Washburn placed first at 10-over for the week after rounds of 75 and 79.

Fort Hays State will wrap up the regular season next month when they head to Monkey Island, Okla. for the Spring Regional Preview April 7-8.

⛳Tigers seventh, Nordlund fifth at Konzem Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Bob Davis, the legendary play by play voice of the Fort Hays State Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks, has passed away at the age of 80, his family announced Friday.

Davis is survived by his son, Steven, daughter-in-law Katie and grandchildren Landon, Will, Millie and Hattie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda, who died March 13, 2025, in Lawrence. Bob and Linda were married for 53 years. Bob passed away Thursday, March 20th.&nbsp;

A 48-year veteran of broadcasting in the state of Kansas, Davis was born in Iola, and grew up in Topeka where he graduated from Topeka West High School in 1962. Davis stayed in Topeka to attend Washburn, where he graduated in 1967 with a degree in history. Davis launched his legendary broadcast career the following year in 1968 when hired by KAYS&nbsp; and began his broadcasting career during the summer of 1968 calling American Legion baseball. He was the play-by-play voice of the Fort Hays State Tigers until 1984, his tenure culminating by calling the 1984 NAIA National Championship won by the FHSU men's basketball team.

Davis took over the KU play-by-play duties in 1984 until his retirement in 2016.&nbsp;He was on the call for the Jayhawks men's basketball national titles in 1988 and 2008 as well as the Jayhawks Orange Bowl victory in 2008. 

In addition to FHSU and KU, Davis called the NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four for CBS Radio six times in 1990, 1992 and 1994-97. Also, in 1997, Davis joined the Kansas City Royals, calling games for radio and television for 16 years.&nbsp;

Davis earned numerous accolades for his work. He was named the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association 14 times, the last coming in 2015.. Davis was also named the two-time recipient of the Oscar Stauffer Sports Broadcasting Award by the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) in 1975 and 1978.

Bob Davis, legendary Tigers and Jayhawks voice, dies

LEXINGTON, Ky. –&nbsp;K-State, the five-seed in the Spokane 4 Region, outscored 12-seed Fairfield by 32 points in the second half to cruise to an 85-41 win in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament at Memorial Coliseum on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats have now advanced at least one round in 14 tournaments.

With the win, K-State (27-7) has registered the third-most wins in program history and the most since the 2002-03 season. The 53 combined wins over the last two seasons are the third-most over a two-season span in program history.

The Wildcats saw four players reach double figures in scoring and were led by their All-American tandem of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/serena-sundell/11858">Serena Sundell</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ayoka-lee/11852">Ayoka Lee</a>. Sundell tallied 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting and added nine assists and two steals. Sundell's nine assists tied for second in program history in an NCAA tournament game, as she achieved the feat last season against Portland.

Lee, playing in her first game since Feb. 22, registered her third career NCAA Tournament double-double with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds. The three career double-double in NCAA Tournament games set a school record.

This was Lee's 64th career double-double breaking a third-place tie in Big 12 history with Brittney Griner of Baylor. Lee needs one double-double to tie Ashley Joens of Iowa State for second in Big 12 history.J

oining Lee and Sundell in double figures were sophomore guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/taryn-sides/11857">Taryn Sides</a>&nbsp;with 14 points, including a 4-of-8 effort from long distance, four rebounds and three assists. She is the fourth Wildcat and first since Kindred Wesemann in 2017 to make four or more 3-pointers in an NCAA tournament game.

Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jaelyn-glenn/11850">Jaelyn Glenn</a>&nbsp;notched 10 points, including 2-of-3 from distance, four rebounds and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED - K-State dashed out with a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. Lee recorded eight points, while Sundell tallied six points and four assists.&nbsp; - With the 21 points in the first quarter, K-State surpassed the school record for points in a season. At the conclusion of Friday's game, K-State season total stands at 2,701 points. - Fairfield (28-5) cut the margin to seven points twice in the second quarter, but the Wildcats used an 11-3 run in the late stages of the second stanza to build a 37-25 lead at halftime. - K-State pushed its advantage to 35, 66-31, as the Wildcats won the third quarter, 29-6, while shooting 73.3 percent (11-of-15). The Wildcats used a 23-2 run to close the frame and build its advantage. The 29 points set the school NCAA Tournament record for points in a quarter. - Sundell opened the run with a 3-pointer with 7:14 to play in the frame. 🏀 K-State women defeat Fairfield in NCAA opener

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Fort Hays State Tennis moved to 9-2 overall on the season by rolling past Truman State University 7-0 on Friday (Mar. 21). The Tigers went 3-0 on their road journey for the week, which included stops in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Missouri. The Tigers kept their win streak going, now at eight-straight matches.

The Tigers quickly notched their first team point with a pair of 6-1 wins in doubles. The No. 2 team of Grace Unruh and Janae Montoya and No. 3 team of Bethan Gill and Ines Latorre secured the point, then the No. 1 team of Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz completed a sweep of doubles matches for FHSU with a 7-5 win.

Five of FHSU's clean sweep of singles matches were by straight sets, while one went to a tiebreaking set. FHSU yielded only two points in four of the matches. Faucz (No. 2), Unruh (No. 4), and Latorre (No. 5) all posted shutouts in their second sets, all winning by scores of 6-2, 6-0. Alfonso won at No. 1 6-1, 6-1, while Gill won at No. 3 6-4, 6-3. Ines Steeman (No. 6) was the only Tiger who needed a third set for victory, winning 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).

Unruh and Montoya also played an exhibition doubles match and were up 4-0 before Truman's squad retired from the match.

Next up for the Tigers is the start of MIAA play. The Tigers are scheduled to play at Northwest Missouri State on Friday (Mar. 28) and Missouri Western on Saturday (Mar. 29). They also have a non-conference match that weekend on Sunday (Mar. 30) at William Jewell College.

(AP) — Jonas Aidoo scored 22 points to help 10th-seeded Arkansas to a 79-72 opening-round&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/march-madness">NCAA Tournament</a>&nbsp;victory over No. 7 seed Kansas on Thursday night in the latest meeting between two of college basketball’s winningest coaches.

Johnell Davis added 18 points, including some crucial late free throws, to help John Calipari to his first tournament victory as Razorbacks coach. Freshman standout Boogie Fland played for the first time since having right thumb surgery in January and scored six points in 24 minutes.

Arkansas will get either No. 2 seed St. John’s or No. 15 Omaha in the second round of the West Region on Saturday.

Zeke Mayo had 18 points for Kansas (21-13), which has made 35 straight NCAA Tournaments and hadn't lost in the first round since 2006. AJ Storr&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MarchMadnessMBB/status/1902876748573790487">finished</a>&nbsp;with 15 points and Hunter Dickinson added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Thursday’s matchup was the third March Madness meeting between two of the four active win leaders in men’s college basketball. Calipari is second (876), with Bill Self of Kansas fourth (831) on the list. Both previous meetings were in the national championship game, with each winning once.

Kansas erased what was an 11-point, second-half deficit and nudged ahead 65-64 on a follow shot by Storr with less than six minutes remaining.

🏀 Arkansas holds off Kansas to post win in matchup of marquee coaches

ATLANTA - Fort Hays State's Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;has been named to the 2025 WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches' All-America Team, announced Thursday by the coaches association. DeGarmo was one of 10 athletes nationwide in NCAA Division II to earn first-team honors this year after picking up WBCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades in 2024.

DeGarmo is just the third player in program history to earn first team All-America honors, joining Annette Wiles (1989-90) and Kate Lehman (2014-15). It is also only the third time in team history that a player has earned All-American recognition in multiple seasons.

The Andover, Kan. native wrapped up one of the greatest careers in program history with another stellar season, averaging 17.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game while knocking down 49.2 percent of her shots from the floor in 33 contests. She ranked in the top 10 in the MIAA in points (third), rebounds (third), assists (10th) and field-goal percentage (seventh).

DeGarmo was named MIAA Player of the Year for a second year in a row in addition to earning D2CCA All-Central Region First Team honors for the second-consecutive season. She was named to the MIAA All-Tournament Team and also earned a spot on the NCAA Central Region All-Tournament Team.

The graduate student scored in double figures 31 times this season, including nine games with 20 or more points. She recorded 10 double-doubles on the year, bringing her career total to 46. Her 567 points scored in 2024-25 are sixth-most in a single season in program history.

DeGarmo wraps up her career with 2,299 points in 156 games, ranking second in program history. She is the leading rebounder in school history with 1,248 career rebounds, while ranking fourth in assists (408), tied for second in steals (236), and second in field goals (865).

She helped the Tigers to 28 wins this season, sixth-most in school history. The Tigers surpassed 20 wins for the 14th consecutive season, extending the longest streak in NCAA Division II.

DeGarmo was the lone MIAA athlete to earn first team All-American honors, while both Grace Pyle of Pittsburg State and Reese Schaaf of Central Missouri received honorable mention recognition.

🏀 DeGarmo earns WBCA All-American honors

ATLANTA - Fort Hays State's Talia Kahrs&nbsp;was a finalist for the 2024-25 WBCA NCAA Division II Coach of the Year award, announced Thursday by the coaches association.

Kahrs was one of seven coaches nationwide to be named a finalist this year. The second-year head coach led Fort Hays State to 28 wins this season, sixth most in a single season in program history. The Tigers reached 20 wins for the 14th consecutive season, extending the longest active streak in Division II.

Fort Hays State finished second in the MIAA regular season standings and reached the finals of the MIAA Championship Tournament before advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Central Region Championship for the second year in a row.

Kahrs now has 53 wins in her first two seasons as head coach at Fort Hays State, making her the fastest coach to 50 wins in program history.

Mike Williams of Grand Valley State was selected as the National Coach of the Year.

WINONA, Minn. – Fort Hays State women's tennis ran its win streak to seven-straight matches with a 5-2 road win over Winona State on Wednesday. The Tigers are now 8-2 overall for the season and 2-0 on their current road swing. Winona State fell to 4-8 on the season.

Fort Hays State won four of the six singles matches contested, which were played first due to court availability. All four wins were in straight sets. Alfonso blanked her opponent at No. 2 by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Faucz won the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-3.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/grace-unruh/8121">Grace Unruh</a>&nbsp;won the No. 6 match 7-5, 6-1 and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/bethan-gill/8116">Bethan Gill</a>&nbsp;won the No. 5 match 7-5, 6-3. TOPEKA, Kan. - The 27th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth to rally and beat Washburn 7-5 Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field. The MIAA-leading Tigers are now 17-5 overall and 12-1 in league play after winning their fifth game in a row while the Ichabods dip to 13-12 on the year and 6-7 in conference games.

Fort Hays State got to work right away, manufacturing a run in the top of the first after a walk, a single, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI groundout. The Ichabods responded immediately, plating one run off two hits and a walk off Tiger starter Mike Acierno&nbsp;in the bottom of the first.

The Tigers had runners on base in each of the next three innings but were unable to push a run across, allowing the home team to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth off two base hits and three batters that were hit by a pitch.

The FHSU offense punched back in the top of the fifth when Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;drove in Derek Woolwine&nbsp;with an RBI single. Woolwine opened a two-out rally with a single before taking second on a wild pitch. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;then struck out but was able to reach first on a passed ball, extending the inning. The reigning MIAA Hitter of the Week made the Ichabods pay, helping the Tigers close within 3-2 with a single through the hole at short.

Trevor Baugh then delivered the first 1-2-3 inning of the game in the bottom of the fifth before WU pushed its lead back to 4-2 with a home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Fort Hays State had two runners reach in the seventh inning with no outs, but the Ichabod bullpen was able to get out of the jam.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/kaleb-carpenter/8453">Kaleb Carpenter</a>&nbsp;came on after the seventh-inning stretch, striking out a pair and working around a double to post another scoreless frame.

Brett Jacobs&nbsp;was next out of the pen, coming on with no outs and two on in the bottom of the eighth. The righty was able to get out of the inning with a ground out and two fly outs.

FHSU's ninth-inning rally opened with a pinch-hit single from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/jose-cintron/8418">Jose Cintron</a>. Two beaned batters and two strikeouts loaded the bases for DeGarmo, who worked a walk to close the gap to 4-3. The Tigers then scored four unearned runs after a throwing error and a Cooper Howell&nbsp;two-RBI single to right, putting FHSU in front for the first time since the top of the first.

Brandon Chavez&nbsp;came on to record his MIAA-leading seventh save after allowing one run to score on three hits in the bottom of the ninth.

Zane Knox&nbsp;and Howell both collected two hits on the day, while Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;and Woolwine both scored twice and DeGarmo and Howell both drove in two RBI.

⚾ No. 27 Tigers rally past Ichabods

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball swept a pair of non-conference games from Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday 

at Fleharty Family Field. The Tigers won by scores of 2-1 and 4-2 to improve to 18-6 overall for the season. The Rangers fell to 6-18 overall. FHSU ran its overall win streak to seven games, all in non-conference play.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 2, Northwestern Oklahoma State 1 Savanah Egger&nbsp;dominated in her second-straight appearance at home this week, holding Northwestern Oklahoma State to just one hit and a pair of walks. She struck out five on her way to a complete-game win, moving to 8-4 overall on the season. Her only blemish in the run column was a runner who reached base by error in the fourth inning.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI single from Regan Curry&nbsp;and RBI double by Lilly Mohr. The Rangers got the one run back in the top of the fourth, but Egger shut them in the final three innings by retiring the final nine batters she faced. Egger also retired the side in order in the second and third innings. The one hit was Egger's fewest allowed in a game so far this season. Mohr led the Tigers with two hits in the game.

Chloe Brown threw a complete game for the Rangers, striking out five and allowing six hits. She moved to 3-8 on the season.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 4, Northwestern Oklahoma State 2 Fort Hays State jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings and held on once again to complete the sweep of NWOSU. Jules Bosco&nbsp;led off with a double in the first and Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;followed with an RBI triple to straight-away center field. Madison Pierce&nbsp;brought her home with an RBI groundout to the right side. In the second, Bosco drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

The score remained 3-0 all the way until the sixth when NWOSU had a single and then two-run home run by Rachel Sherwood to trim the lead to one. However, the Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Lexi Mohr. Mohr and Bosco led the Tigers with two hits each.

Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;threw a complete game for the Tigers, recording six strikeouts with no walks allowed. She scattered six hits. Kathryn Jones took the loss in a complete game for NWOSU, allowing four runs on seven hits with one strikeout.

The Tigers return to conference play on Friday when they play host to Northwest Missouri State. The doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She struck out five on her way to a complete-game win, moving to 8-4 overall on the season. Her only blemish in the run column was a runner who reached base by error in the fourth inning.The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI single from Regan Curry&nbsp;and RBI double by Lilly Mohr. The Rangers got the one run back in the top of the fourth, but Egger shut them in the final three innings by retiring the final nine batters she faced. Egger also retired the side in order in the second and third innings. The one hit was Egger's fewest allowed in a game so far this season. Mohr led the Tigers with two hits in the game.Chloe Brown threw a complete game for the Rangers, striking out five and allowing six hits. She moved to 3-8 on the season.Game 2: Fort Hays State 4, Northwestern Oklahoma State 2 Fort Hays State jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings and held on once again to complete the sweep of NWOSU. Jules Bosco&nbsp;led off with a double in the first and Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;followed with an RBI triple to straight-away center field. Madison Pierce&nbsp;brought her home with an RBI groundout to the right side. In the second, Bosco drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.The score remained 3-0 all the way until the sixth when NWOSU had a single and then two-run home run by Rachel Sherwood to trim the lead to one. However, the Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Lexi Mohr. Mohr and Bosco led the Tigers with two hits each.Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;threw a complete game for the Tigers, recording six strikeouts with no walks allowed. She scattered six hits. Fort Hays State picked up the first point in the match by winning two of three doubles contests. The Tigers clinched the first team point when the No. 2 team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/suzana-faucz/8130">Suzana Faucz</a>&nbsp;and the No. 3 team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/ines-latorre/8117">Ines Latorre</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/yone-pereiro/8119">Yone Pereiro</a>&nbsp;each won 6-3. Pereiro dropped her No. 4 match 6-2, 6-3.The Cougars evened up the team count by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches. Vangala fell at No. 1 7-5, 6-3, while Alfonso fell at No. 2 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). The team result came down to the No. 6 contest between Unruh and Katelyn Nesheim of Sioux Falls. Unruh fell in the first set 6-4, but rallied for a 6-1 win in the second to force a tiebreaker set. Unruh pulled away for a 10-5 win in the final frame to lift the Tigers to victory.

The Tigers continue their three-match road trip for the week at Winona State on Wednesday (Mar. 19) in Winona, Minn. The match is set for 1:30 p.m.

It is the first recorded time the Tigers have been listed inside a national poll since 2006 and the first time they have been mentioned in a poll since the 2011 preseason poll when they were receiving votes.
