HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team notched its second-consecutive 30-point conference victory Saturday, defeating the Washburn Ichabods 83-53. The Tigers improve to 9-0 to start the season and 2-0 in MIAA play, while the Ichabods dip to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in league action.

The Tigers never trailed in the contest after scoring the first nine points of the afternoon. Washburn finally got on the board four minutes into the game, but 3-pointers from Kate Dilsaver and Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;helped the home team stretch its lead to 22-7 by the end of the first quarter.

The FHSU defense kept the pressure on in the second quarter, limiting the Ichabods to five points and a pair of field goals. The Tigers were equally as impressive on the offensive end, knocking down 11-of-22 from the floor in the frame en route to a 48-12 lead at halftime. Washburn's 12 points before halftime are tied for the fewest allowed in a half by the Tigers during the Talia Kahrs&nbsp;era.

After scoring 17 in a row to end the first half, the Tigers stretched their lead as high as 43 midway through the third quarter on an Avery Lowe&nbsp;free throw. The Ichabods started to chip away at the lead against the FHSU bench over the final 12 minutes, trimming the final margin to 30 points.

Fort Hays State put together another balanced offensive attack with five players scoring in double figures for the second game in a row. Three additional players scored at least five points while 10 different players found the scoresheet in all.

DeGarmo led the way with 14 points alongside three assists and three steals. Dilsaver added 12 points, all in the first half, while dishing out a team-high six assists and adding three steals. Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;totaled 11 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks, with Brooke Loewe recording 11 points and three assists. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;notched 10 points, reaching double figures for a seventh-consecutive game.

The Tiger defense held Washburn to a shooting percentage of 32.8 percent (20-of-61), its lowest output of the year. The Ichabods turned the ball over 22 times leading to 21 Tiger points. FHSU scored 18 fast-break points in the win, its highest total against an NCAA DII team this season.

Fort Hays State knocked down 50.8 percent from the floor (33-of-65), the third time this season the Tigers have hit at least half of their shots in a game this year.

The Tigers will return to action in 12 days when they travel to Hawaii for the Big Island Holiday Classic December 19-20. FHSU will play Truman State on Thursday the 19th beginning at 8 p.m. CT (4 p.m. HT) before battling Quincy on Friday the 20th at 10 p.m. CT (6 p.m. HT). FHSU will not play at home for one month when the Tigers host Nebraska-Kearney on January 7 at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — Zuby Ejiofor posted career highs scoring 28 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and St. John's used an offensive eruption after halftime to beat Kansas State 88-71 in a Big 12-Big East Battle contest on Saturday.

Ejiofor finished 11-for-17 shooting, Kadary Richmond scored 13 points and RJ Luis Jr. and reserve Simeon Wilcher each scored 11 for St. John's (7-2). The Red Storm had a 51-40 rebound advantage and a 17-10 edge in assists.

Brendan Hausen scored 21 of his 27 points before halftime, David N'Guessan scored 15 points and Coleman Hawkins 11 and grabbed nine rebounds for the Wildcats (6-3).

In a game of runs, St. John's ran away with it after halftime, starting with an 18-5 run over the first 4 1/2 minutes to go up 53-44 with consecutive 3-pointers from Luis and Aaron Scott. Ruben Prey's 3 gave the Red Storm a 62-50 lead at 11:01 to play and they led by double digits for the remainder. St. John's scored 53 points after intermission.

The Wildcats countered with a 14-2 outburst in which Hausen sank three 3s and Max Jones added another for a 31-21 lead. St. John's rallied with an 8-0 spurt that took just a little more than minute to get within 31-28 with 3:42 left before halftime. The Wildcats led 39-35 at halftime.

It was the first time the two teams faced each other since Dec. 10, 1965, when then first-year head coach Lou Carnesseca led St. John’s to a 72-65 win. Carnesecca died at age 99 on Nov. 30.

This will be the first of two meetings with Washburn this season. FHSU won the only meeting with Washburn last year by a score of 71-58 in Hays. This will be the fourth time in FHSU's NCAA Division II history it faces an NABC Top 25 ranked Washburn squad. FHSU has won one of the three previous meetings, which was when Washburn was ranked No. 3 and FHSU was ranked No. 1 back on November 17, 1996 at Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU won that contest 82-60. Washburn has won the last two meetings when it has been ranked in the NABC Top 25. The last time FHSU faced an NABC ranked Washburn team was in 2012-13 when the Ichabods squeaked out a 70-69 win in Hays as the No. 13 ranked team in the nation.

The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team wraps up the first conference weekend of the season on Saturday when the Tigers host MIAA rival Washburn beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Fort Hays State is now 8-0 on the season, making this the fourth-best start in program history. The Tigers started the 2012-13 season and the 2015-16 campaign with 10-straight wins before setting the program record with 15-consecutive victories to begin the 2018-19 season. Fort Hays State is one of 14 remaining undefeated teams in Division II.

The Tigers now have 990 wins in the program's 52-year history, putting the team within 10 victories of reaching the 1,000-win plateau.

Olivia Hollenbeck notched her seventh career double-double in Thursday's blowout win over Central Missouri, totaling 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. She is the fourth different Tiger to record a double-double this season, joining Brooke Loewe, Katie DeGarmo and Telexa Weeter.

Ellie Stearns&nbsp;knocked down four 3-pointers in the win Thursday, doing so for a second-consecutive game. She leads the team with 11 makes from behind the arc this season.

The Tigers rank in the top 10 in the country in numerous statistical categories, including fourth in defensive rebounds per game (33.0), sixth in field goal percentage defense (30.8 percent), ninth in fouls per game (13.0) and ninth in assist/turnover ratio (1.28).Loewe leads the conference and ranks sixth in DII with 50 assists on the year, while her average of 6.3 assists per night is the best in the league and 10th in the country.

Hollenbeck continues to lead the team with 17.1 points per game, fourth-best in the MIAA. The Lincoln, Neb. graduate student is knocking down 67.1 percent of her shots this season, third-best in Division II.Weeter led the team in scoring for a second time this season on Thursday, totaling 21 points to score in double figures for a sixth-consecutive game.

The Ichabods lead the all-time series, 47-40, while the series is level at 21-21 in games played in Hays. Fort Hays State has won eight-straight overall dating back to February 2018, its longest winning streak in series history. Washburn's last win over the Tigers came in December of 2017. Fort Hays State has won 13 of the last 14 meetings over the last 10-plus seasons. The Tigers have also won eight in a row at home against the Ichabods, with WU's last road win coming in 2013. Fort Hays State is 1-0 overall and 1-0 at home against the Ichabods during the Talia Kahrs&nbsp;era.

The Tigers used a big second half to defeat Washburn by 25 last season (1/25/24), 70-45. FHSU outscored the Ichabods 40-17 in the second half while holding WU to its lowest scoring output of the season. FHSU scored 15-straight in the third quarter, its longest run of the season, while holding Washburn to just three points in that frame, the fewest allowed in any quarter last year. DeGarmo led the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds, good for her seventh double-double of the season.

DeGarmo has scored in double figures in all four of her games against the Ichabods, including one double-double. She averages 13.5 points and 7.3 rebounds when playing Washburn. Hollenbeck has scored in double figures twice against WU, averaging 9.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in four career matchups.

Washburn is 4-5 this season and 0-1 in conference play after dropping a narrow 66-61 contest in the MIAA opener Thursday at Nebraska-Kearney. Before that game the Ichabods had won four in a row after dropping their first four games of the year. The Ichabods lead the league and rank 23rd nationally with a field goal percentage of 46.0 while they rank 259th out of 290 DII teams with a field goal percentage defense of 43.7 percent. Payton Sterk (18.0 ppg) and Yiibari Nwidadah (17.4 ppg) rank T-second and fourth, respectively, in the MIAA in scoring.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian boys and girls fell to 0-2 to open the
season Friday with a loss in the consolation semifinals of the Hays City
Shootout at Hays Middle School.

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs fell behind early and could
never overcome a big second-half run by Manhattan as the Indians defeated the
Monarchs 53-32 in the consolation semifinals of the Hays City Shootout Friday
at Hays Middle School.

Manhattan opened the game on a 14-0 run, forcing TMP into 10
first-quarter turnovers.

It took the Monarchs more than seven minutes to break onto
the scoreboard with a pair of Hannah Rose free throws. Then, with just nine
seconds left in the first quarter, Brooke Koenigsman scored her first field goal,
making it 16-4 through the first quarter.

The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter,
giving Manhattan a 27-15 lead at halftime.

The Indians opened the second half on a 16-0 run and never
trailed again in a 53-32 Manhattan win.

TMP’s Hannah Rose led the Monarchs with six points.

The Lady Monarchs will play Newton in the 7th-place game
Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hays Middle School.

The Newton Railers used a 43-8 run that covered three
quarters as they beat the TMP boys 57-24 Friday night in the consolation
semifinals of the Hays City Shootout Friday at Hays Middle School.

Newton opened the game on a 9-2 run before TMP got a Will
Eck three-pointer and an Ari Patel field goal, making it 9-7. 

But that was as close as the Monarchs would get the rest of
the way.

Newton closed the first quarter leading 21-12 after Eck made
his second three-pointer.

The Railers maintained the lead throughout the next three
quarters, and with the clock running in the fourth quarter, Newton earned the
57-24 victory.

Eck led the Monarchs with six points and Grant Nehls and
Caden Dinkel added five points each.

TMP will take on Manhattan in the 7th-place game at 11:45 a.m.
Saturday.

🏀 Hays City Shootout Day 2 Results; Day 3 Schedule

Hays High and Hugoton faced off in the championship semifinals of the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout on Friday evening in both the girls and boys bracket.

Hays scored the first 11 points of the game on their way to a ______ win over Hugoton to punch their ticket into the championship game.

Hugoton scored three points to close the game down to eight which was their closest margin in the game. Hays quickly scored seven more for an 18-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Indians gave up just a single free throw in the second quarter and pushed their edge to 27 at halftime 31-4.

The lead continued to swell in the third quarter. Hays scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to lead 44-4. The Indians led 48-10 going to the fourth quarter starting a continuous clock fourth quarter. Hays ended the game with a 54-12 win.

Hays improves to 2-0 on the young season and will face Life Prep in the semifinals. Hugoton falls to 1-1.

A frantic back and forth first half left Hays with a 21-20 lead. The Indians built several lead of eight but were unable to increase the advantage to double figures. Hugoton scored the last seven points of the first half to close the gap down to one point.

Hays never trailed in the first half after scoring the first four points of the game. Hays led 13-9 after one quarter and led by eight three different times in the third quarter. The final came with three minutes before halftime at 21-13.

The two teams traded punches for the entire second half. Hugoton took their first lead early in the second half. The teams traded the lead over the next four minutes until the Eagles grabbed a 34-30 advantage with 2:00 left in the third.&nbsp;

Hays battled back to tie the game at 32 just before the third quarter ended.

Dawson Ruder scored three of his team high 13 on a conventional three point play to put the Indians in front 35-34 two minutes into the fourth quarter.

The teams traded the lead over the next two minutes with Hugoton take their last lead at 4:10 remaining 40-39. A pair of Trey Oakley free throws gave Hays a lead they never gave up. Thirty seconds later Tiger Johnson buried a left corner three for a 44-40 lead with 2:25 left.

Hays led by five when the Eagles nailed a three pointer with a minute remaining. While leading by three with ten seconds left Hays fouled three times to put Hugoton to the free throw line. The Eagles converted both shots bringing the score to 46-45. Johnny Cano made one of two free throw shots with 4.9 left and a Hugoton three at the buzzer was strong leaving Hays with the victory.

Ruder coupled his 13 points with 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and fourth of his career.

Hays is 2-0 and will face Blue Valley Northwest in the championship game at 7:00, following the girls game.

It is the first time since 2003 that the Hays boys and girls have both been in the Shootout championship at the same time.

HAYS, Kan. – The MIAA opener between Fort Hays State and Central Missouri was a battle on Thursday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers outlasted the Mules in double overtime by a score of 70-67 to win their fourth-straight game and improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. UCM moved to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA. FHSU ran its win streak over UCM to eight straight games dating back to the 2020-21 season and it was the fifth-straight win for the Tigers over the Mules in Hays.

Neither team gained more than five points of separation for nearly 35 minutes until FHSU took a seven-point lead with 5:21 to play in the second half. FHSU led by five twice in the opening half before clinging on to a one-point lead (31-30) at halftime. UCM battled back late to take a two-point lead with 57 seconds to go, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/8224">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;had the game-tying bucket with 25 seconds remaining before UCM missed a potential game-winning shot. FHSU and UCM were tied 55-55 at the end of regulation.

Neither team had much offensive success in the first overtime as both teams had just four points. The Tigers had to tie the game late again on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/lucas-hammeke/8225">Lucas Hammeke</a>&nbsp;drive to the bucket to knot the game at 59-59 and force the second extra-period. UCM missed another potential game-winning shot just before the buzzer.

Free throws were key for FHSU in the second overtime as four straight took the Tigers from two down to two up.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/shaun-riley/8227">Shaun Riley</a>&nbsp;tacked on a field goal to move the lead to four with 1:41 to play.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/lucas-hammeke/8225">Lucas Hammeke</a>&nbsp;then provided the biggest bucket of the night for the Tigers with 14 seconds left, pushing the lead to four again on another drive to the bucket. The Mules made a shot to get the lead back to two, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/8224">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;hit one of two free throws to get the lead to three. UCM missed a corner 3-point field goal attempt and time ran out, sealing the win for FHSU.

The back-and-forth battle saw 26 lead changes and 17 ties throughout the night. Sixteen of the 26 lead changes happened in the first half. Fort Hays State is now 12-0 in overtime games at Gross Memorial Coliseum under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/mark-johnson/1330">Mark Johnson</a>.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/8224">K</a><a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kaleb-hammeke/8224">aleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;led the Tiger scoring effort with 19 points, a new season high for him. With his first two points of the night at the free throw line, he moved to second on the all-time scoring list at FHSU, passing Mark Wilson who had 1,631 in his career from 1978-81. Hammeke has 1,649 points in his career, now just 117 points shy of the record 1,766 held by Alonzo Goldston.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/shaun-riley/8227">Shaun Riley</a>&nbsp;(15),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/dan-mukuna/8229">Dan Mukuna</a>&nbsp;(12), and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kyle-grill/8223">Kyle Grill</a>&nbsp;(11) joined Hammeke as Tigers in double figures scoring. Riley had a team-best eight rebounds and four assists. FHSU finished 39.6 percent from the field overall, but was a strong 85.2 percent at the free-throw line (23-of-27).

Kyran Tilley led the Mules in scoring with 21 points, followed by Elijah Farr with 14, Jack Chapman with 12, and DeAirius Barker with 10. FHSU held UCM to just 35.2 percent shooting overall, but UCM was also strong at the free-throw line at 87.5 percent (21-of-24).

The Tigers look to ride the momentum of a big conference-opening victory into a date with the No. 3/4 ranked team in the country on Saturday. Washburn comes to Hays with a record of 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA after a 35-point win at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

HAYS - Hays High opened the season with the 42nd annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout on Thursday. The girls and boys teams both took on Newton.

GIRLS: #9 Hays 67, Newton 29 Hays scored in the first six seconds of the game and never trailed the visiting Railers. The Indians opened the game on a 14-2 run and led by as many as 13 in the first quarter.

The Indians pushed their advantage as high as 19 before halftime at 35-16. Hays had a rare cold stretch in the game and scored just three points in the final three minutes of the half to lead 38-21 at the break.

Hays scored 28 points in the third quarter including six of their eight three pointers in the game. Morgan Armbruster and Jenna Schmeidler combined for 22 of those third quarter points. The continuous clock fourth quarter closed the game at 67-29.

Molly Martin passed Savannah Schneider for career steals at 165. It is the second career record owned by Martin as she set the school record for made threes in a career last season.

Hays will play Hugoton in the semifinals at 6:30 Friday evening. The Eagles beat Olathe East 41-35.

The two teams locked up the score at two, four and six before Hays scored five straight points for an 11-6 lead five minutes in. The Indians led 19-12 to start the second quarter when Newton scored five quick points to close within two.

A 7-0 run pushed the Hays lead to nine at 26-17 before Newton rattled off eight quick points to crawl within one point. The Railers had three chances to take the lead before halftime but were turned away.

Newton did take a short-lived lead in the third quarter at 29-28. Seven seconds later Dawson Ruder converted a conventional three point play for a 31-29 Hays lead.

The Indians built on that momentum to gain a 12 point edge with 5:15 left in the game. The Indians though didn't score a field goal for the remainder of the game. But their defense did enough to hold off the Railers. Newton pulled within a single possession at 46-43 with 11 seconds remaining. The Indians made half of their four free throws to win 48-43.

Dawson Ruder scored 15 to lead Hays in the victory. The Indians will face Hugoton in the semifinals Friday evening.

HAYS - The TMP-Marian boys' and girls' basketball teams each
dropped their first game of the 42nd Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays
City Shootout Thursday in Hays.

BOYS: Hugoton 51, TMP 21 The Hugoton Eagles took advantage of a rough shooting first
quarter for the Monarchs, opening the game on a 15-2 run while the Monarchs
made just one field goal from the floor. in the first qarter.

Hugoton opened the game on an 18-2 run into early in the
second quarter.

TMP got back-to-back field goals, cutting the deficit to 12
at 18-6 early in the second quarter. But Hugoton answered with a 14-5 run to
close the first half with a 32-11 lead.

The Eagles outscored TMP 17-3 in the third quarter and with
the running clock in the fourth they cruised to the 51-21 victory.

Jacob Seib led the Monarchs with eight points and Grant
Nehls added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Monarchs will take on Newton in the 8:15 p.m. game Friday
at Hays Middle School.

GIRLS: Olathe West 53, TMP 32 The Owls started the game with a three pointer before the
Monarchs Brooke Koenigsman scored five straight and Shaynne Yost field goal in
transition gave the Monarchs their largest lead of the game at 7-3.

The Owls answered the TMP 7-0 run with one of their own for
a 10-7 lead.

TMP was able to hang close for much of the first half but
down 12-11 the Owls strung together a&nbsp;
10-2 run to close out the first half and led 22-12 at the break.

TMP’s Brook Koenigsman led the Monarchs with 16 points and Shaylee
Gottschalk chipped in with 10 points.

The Monarchs will take on Manhattan in the 3 p.m. Thursday.

HAYS, Kan. - The 7th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense to cruise past Central Missouri in Thursday's (Dec. 5) MIAA opener, winning 74-44. The 30-point win is the second-largest margin of victory in series history.

The Tigers improved to 8-0 to start the year and 1-0 in conference play, making this the fourth-best start in team history. The Jennies dip to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in MIAA action.

Fort Hays State was firing on all cylinders, with five players scoring in double figures for the first time all season on the offensive end and the defense keeping a potent Jennie squad in check. FHSU forced 18 UCM turnovers, its highest total of the season, while limiting the Jennies to a season-low shooting percentage of 33.3 percent (17-of-51) and a season-low point total.

The Jennies took a momentary lead two minutes into the contest before FHSU rattled off 10-straight points to take the lead for good. After trailing by as many as eight, the visitors closed within two by the end of the first period, 18-16, before FHSU scored the first nine points of the second frame to pad the lead to double figures.

A pair of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ellie-stearns/8333">Ellie Stearns</a>&nbsp;3-pointers helped FHSU pad the lead to 13, but the Jennies managed to close within 10 by the break, 37-27.The Tiger defense clamped down in the third quarter, forcing eight turnovers and limiting the Jennies to six points, tied for the lowest scoring quarter by an FHSU opponent this season. Fort Hays State built the lead to 19 by the end of the third stanza, 52-33.Stearns poured in two more triples in the fourth quarter while Weeter scored seven of her team-high 21 points in the frame, helping the Tigers build the lead as high as 34 before settling for a 30-point win.

Four other Tigers joined Weeter in double figures, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/olivia-hollenbeck/8329">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;contributing 13 points, three blocks and a career-high 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and the eighth of her career. Loewe and Stearns each scored 12 points, with Loewe adding five assists, two steals and one block.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/katie-wagner-degarmo/8334">Katie Wagner DeGarmo</a>&nbsp;totaled 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Fort Hays State dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Jennies 46-27. The Tigers turned 17 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points while UCM managed just two points following offensive rebounds.
