KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State held a four-point halftime lead, but saw Nebraska-Kearney catch fire in the second half and win on its home floor 85-63 in the regular season finale at the Health and Sports Center. The Lopers end the regular season 12-15 overall and 10-9 in the MIAA. FHSU dropped to 19-9 overall and 12-7 in the MIAA.

The Tigers took a 31-27 lead into halftime, holding the Lopers to just 28 percent shooting in the first half. However, that trend shifted violently the other direction in the second half as the Lopers shot a blazing hot 64.5 percent from the field after the half. With six minutes to go in the second half, UNK was at 80 percent for the second half.

FHSU held a 36-29 lead with just over 18 minutes remaining before UNK went on a very quick 18-0 run to lead 47-36. The momentum swing was too much to overcome as the Lopers kept pouring in basket after basket. UNK led by as many as 24 at one point in the second half before the final margin was 22.

For the Tigers, it was their most points allowed in a game this season, going past the previous mark of 82 allowed to Concordia-St. Paul early in the season.

With his first basket of the game in the first half, a 3-point field goal, Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;reached 2,000 points for his career as a Tiger. He finished the game with 11 points and now has 2,008 in his career. He also dished out a team-high five assists.

Shaun Riley&nbsp;the Tigers with a double-double performance of 16 points and 12 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double at FHSU. Kyle Grill and Traejon Davis&nbsp;also added 11 points each.

Allen Taylor led the Lopers with 29 points, while Chase Thompson added 22. Kendrick Gilbert (12) and Ja'Bryant Hill (10) also reached double figures.

The Tigers finished fourth in the MIAA regular season standings, one game back of a second-place tie between Rogers State and Pittsburg State at 13-6. However, the Tigers may have a chance to have a higher seed in the conference tournament than RSU or PSU with the conference using KPI rankings. The Tigers ranked second in the rankings going into Saturday and beat both RSU and PSU head-to-head in the regular season.

🏀 Hot-shooting second half carries Lopers past Tigers

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State ran its win streak to six games on Saturday with a 3-2 win over Missouri Western at Larks Park. FHSU led 2-0 through four inning, but saw MWSU even the count with runs in the fifth and sixth. A Derek Woolwine&nbsp;2-out RBI single put the Tigers in front in the seventh and Brandon Chavez&nbsp;made the lead hold up with a 2-inning save.

The Tigers scored first in the second when a single and a walk set up an RBI single by Cesar Saavedra. In the fourth inning, the lead moved to 2-0 when a walk led to an RBI single by Tony Moore.

The Griffons used small ball to put their first run on the board in the fifth on an RBI single by Carson Shear. A pair of bunt singles set up the opportunity. The Griffons picked up their second run in the sixth when a throwing error allowed another run to cross.

Isaiah Ural&nbsp;singled, stole a base, and advanced to third on a groundout in the seventh. That set up the go-ahead single by Woolwine to left center field.

After a leadoff walk by the Griffons in the eighth, Chavez entered to shut the door. He allowed just one hit over his two innings of work and struck out one to record his fifth save of the season. Kaleb Carpenter&nbsp;bridged the gap from starter Cade Flaherty&nbsp;and picked up the win in just one inning of work. He struck out two. Flaherty pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Logan Winkelman and Lou Levy both threw 4.0 innings for the Griffons. Levy, the reliever, gave up the go-ahead run in the seventh and took the loss. He allowed just two hits and struck out two. The starter Winkelman allowed five hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Already with the series win in hand, Fort Hays State looks for a sweep of the 3-game series with Missouri Western on Sunday. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Larks Park.

⚾ Tigers edge Griffons to take game two of series

KEARNEY, Neb. - The sixth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team saw its 12-game winning streak end in the final game of the regular season Saturday, losing to Nebraska-Kearney 75-65 at the Health and Sports Center. The Tigers (25-3, 16-3 MIAA) trimmed a 15-point deficit to just two points with less than four minutes to play, but the Lopers (20-8, 13-6 MIAA) held on down the stretch for the win.

The Tigers will now await the final release of the MIAA KPI standings to learn their seed for the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championship presented by Southern Bank. Brackets and schedules will be released later Saturday evening.

After falling to the Tigers by 36 points just three days ago, the Lopers bounced back at home by shooting 42.2 percent from the floor and scoring 18 second-chance points on 17 offensive rebounds.

The Tigers, who played the game without senior Kate Dilsaver who left Wednesday's game with a knee injury, scored the first six points of the game and led for much of the first quarter before the Lopers tied things up at 14 eight minutes into the contest. UNK took its first lead of the game with the final basket of the opening quarter, leading 16-15.

An Ellie Stearns&nbsp;3-pointer tied the game at 18 early in the second frame before the home team used a 12-2 run to take the lead for good. Megan Earney&nbsp;drilled another Tiger triple for the final points of the first half, helping FHSU close within 32-26.

The black and gold pulled within four to start the second half thanks to six points from Katie DeGarmo, but a 13-2 UNK run pushed the lead as high as 15 with 14 minutes left, 49-34.

Fort Hays State punched back with its own 15-2 run, including 11-straight points to close within two before the end of the quarter. A trio of long-range makes fueled the Tiger run, including a pair from Brooke Loewe&nbsp;and another from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/talexa-weeter/8335">Talexa Weeter</a>.

The Lopers were able to push their lead back to nine midway through the fourth quarter before FHSU made one final run, scoring the next seven points to pull within 62-60. DeGarmo opened the run with a layup before Earney drilled another 3-pointer. The Tigers added a pair of free throws later to pull within one possession, but UNK hit 8-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to hold on for the win.

DeGarmo and Olivia Hollenbeck tied for the team lead with 16 points, while Weeter added 12 and Loewe chipped in 11. DeGarmo collected a team-best nine rebounds, while Loewe totaled six assists.

The Tigers hit 40.4 percent from the floor (19-of-47) but managed just 67.7 percent from the free throw line (21-of-31).

Fort Hays State will head to Kansas City, Mo. to open the postseason next week (March 5-9) with the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championship. The Tigers will play in the quarterfinals on either Thursday or Friday, with the semifinals and finals to follow on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was the second win at Allen Fieldhouse (2-22) in the school's history.

Christian Anderson had 15 points and Darrion Williams scored 14 for Texas Tech (22-7, 13-5 Big 12).

KJ Adams Jr. had 21 points for the Jayhawks (19-10, 10-8), who had multiple runs of at least six points.

The Red Raiders used a 16-2 run early in the half to turn a six-point deficit into an eight-point lead. They led 48-37 at halftime.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders were not intimidated by Allen Fieldhouse and the raucous crowd. Despite being 1-21 all-time in the facility, the Raiders responded every time the Jayhawks made a run.

Kansas: The Jayhawks lacked a killer instinct. Even though they clawed back into the game multiple times, they couldn't pull away.

After Kansas came all the way back to tie the game at 73-all, Williams hit a 3-pointer to give the Red Raiders the lead for good.

Fort Hays State will play its final game of the 2024-25 regular season on Saturday at Nebraska-Kearney. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Health and Sports Center. The Tigers enter at 19-8 overall and sit in a three-way tie for second in the MIAA standings at 12-6. The Lopers are 11-15 overall and 9-9 in the MIAA.

The Tigers extended their win streak over the Lopers to eight-straight games on Wednesday night in Hays with a 79-57 win. It was also the eighth-straight win for FHSU in Hays over UNK. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;led the Tigers with 27 points, while Kyle Grill&nbsp;had a perfect shooting night and added 14 points. Allen Taylor led the Lopers with 19 points.

With his 27-point performance on Wednesday, Hammeke&nbsp;is now just three points shy of 2,000 for his career. He really made a burst for the 2,000 milestone in the last four games for FHSU, averaging 25.8 points per game in that stretch. For the season, Hammeke is averaging 16.2 points per game and has reached double figures in all but one game. Hammeke is already the all-time scoring leader in program history.

Fort Hays State will be looking to match its longest win streak of the season (5) on Saturday. The Tigers currently own a four-game win streak and it's the fourth time this year they have had a win streak of at least four games.

The Tigers have the best scoring defense in NCAA Division II, allowing just 58.9 points per game. They have held opponents inside of 60 points in seven of their last eight games.

The sixth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team plays Nebraska-Kearney for a second time in four days Saturday when the long-time rivals wrap up the regular season in Kearney, Neb. First tip is slated for 2 p.m. inside the Health &amp; Sports Center.

Winners of 12 in a row, Fort Hays State is now 25-2 overall and 17-2 in conference play. The Tigers are one game behind Pittsburg State in the conference regular season standings, however with Wednesday's dominant win over Nebraska-Kearney FHSU has moved past the Gorillas in the KPI rankings which will be used for tournament seeding. This rating system assigns point values to wins and losses based on opponent and location, etc.

This is the second 12-game winning streak of the season for the Tigers. It is tied for the seventh-longest winning streak in team history while this is just the third time in the team's 56-year history that FHSU has had multiple double-digit winning streaks in a single season.

Fort Hays State now has 25 wins in back-to-back seasons, reaching that plateau&nbsp;for the eighth time in school history. One more win would move 2024-25 into a tie for fifth for the winningest season in school history (26 wins in 2017-18).

The Tigers just completed a perfect month of February, winning all eight of their games. It is the winningest month for the team since FHSU went 9-0 in February 2021.

Fort Hays State knocked down a blistering 60.7 percent from the floor in Wednesday's 92-56 win over the Lopers, shooting better than 60 percent for the first time in four years. That effort helped the Tigers improve their season shooting percentage to 46.6 percent, fifth-best in the country.

The Tigers also rank second nationally in assist/turnover ratio (1.38), fourth in assists per game (18.7) fifth in scoring margin (plus-19.6), sixth in winning percentage (92.6 percent) and 10th in field goal percentage defense (34.6 percent).

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;distributed nine assists Wednesday, bringing her season total to 186. That total is the most in a single season in team history and ranks second in Division II.

Talexa Weeter&nbsp;matched her career high with 25 points in just 17 minutes of action against the Lopers, scoring 20-plus points for the fifth time this year. Despite coming off the bench, the sophomore ranks 15th in the conference with 13.1 points per game.

Kate DeGarmo&nbsp;totaled 20 points in Wednesday's win, scoring in double figures for the ninth time in 11 tries against Nebraska-Kearney. The Maize, Kan. native averages 12.5 points and 6.3 rebounds when playing the Lopers.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;recorded a career-high six steals against UNK, bringing her season total to 60 steals. That ranks second in the conference, while she also ranks second in the league in field goal percentage (61.8 percent), third in blocks (47) and fifth in points per game (16.5).

Bailey Wilborn&nbsp;drilled a trio of 3-pointers in Wednesday's win, doing so for the fourth time this season. She is tied with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ellie-stearns/8333">Ellie Stearns</a>&nbsp;for the most games with at least three long-range makes this year. Stearns now has at least one 3-pointer in six of the last seven games.

Megan Earney&nbsp;also hit three shots from behind the arc against the Lopers, helping FHSU knock down a season-best 10 3-pointers.

Both the Tigers and Lopers were ranked in the top 10 in the latest NCAA Division II Central Region rankings that were released on Wednesday. Fort Hays State was listed third in the region, while UNK was 10th.

This is not the first time the Lopers and Tigers have played twice in one week. Just four years ago the teams played twice in three days during the COVID-altered 2020-21 season. The unranked Tigers handed No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney its first and second losses of the season, winning 61-49 in Hays on a Thursday (1/28/21) and coming away victorious 68-60 two days later in Kearney (1/30/21).

The Tigers have both played and beaten UNK more than any other school in program history. Fort Hays State is 63-42 all-time against Nebraska-Kearney, while the series is tied 25-25 in games played in Kearney. FHSU has won each of the last three meetings. The Tigers are 3-0 against the Lopers under head coach Talia Kahrs, including a 1-0 record on the road. The Tigers are 19-6 against UNK in regular season MIAA meetings and 5-3 in games that reach overtime, including wins in the last five overtime meetings.

The Lopers are now 19-8 overall and 12-6 in conference action, including a 10-2 record at home. Nebraska-Kearney averages 71.9 points per night, sixth-best in the MIAA. Their scoring margin of plus-13.0 is third-best in the league. The Lopers average 26.6 points off the bench per game, best in the league and 25th-best in Division II. Jillian Aschoff leads a balanced offense with 11.3 points per game, however six Lopers average at least 7.6 points per game. Bailee Sobczak leads the conference with 3.3 offensive rebounds per game.

Looking ahead, the Tigers will enter the postseason next week when they head to historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, Mo. for the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championship presented by Southern Bank. Should the Tigers earn the No. 1 or 2 seed in the tournament they would play in the quarterfinals on Thursday. However if they are seeded third through sixth they would open the tournament in the quarterfinals on Friday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays finished off the regular season by hosting Great Bend. The games were the final scheduled games at the current high school with plans to be in the new high school for next season.

Girls #4 Hays 67, Great Bend 23

Three big first half runs pushed Hays to a 67-23 over Great Bend allowing the Indians to capture their first ever perfect regular season.

The Panthers scored the first two points of the game. The Indians scored the next 16 and never looked back. Hays led 16-2 and that lead never dipped under double digits rest of the night.

Great Bend did score back-to-back field goals to make the difference 16-6, but never drew any closer. The Indians added to their lead at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter with a 13-0 run for a 22-6 lead.

Another run, this time 12-2, put Hays ahead 41-10 at halftime.

The best Great Bend run in the game came in the third quarter when they scored seven in a row to bring the score to 46-17. Hays ended that quarter with a 13-2 run for a forty point lead heading to the fourth.

The fourth was played with a running clock and ended with a 44 point difference at 67-23. It is the tenth opponent to score 29 or less points and eleventh to make nine or less field goals.

All five seniors scored for the Indians on Senior Night. Hays(20-0, 8-0) has won back-to-back undefeated conference titles and 19 straight conference games. Great Bend(6-14, 2-6) turned the ball over 31 times.

Hays will be the #1 seed in 5A West for postseason. They will host Great Bend once again on Tuesday.

Great Bend scored the first 15 points of the game while it took Hays six minutes to get on the board in the Panthers 66-32 victory.&nbsp;

Hays scored five straight to get within ten at 15-5. It would be the closest the Indians would get all night.&nbsp; The Panthers shot lights out the entire evening. They made 15 of 23 shots in the first half for a 34-18 advantage.

Great Bend hit their first six shots of the second half, including two three pointers. The Panthers pushed their lead as high as thirty points in the third quarter at 53-23.&nbsp;

Most of the fourth quarter was played with a continuous clock ending with a 66-32 Great Bend victory.

Great Bend(18-2, 8-0) shot 69% from the floor and made seven of eight three pointers. Hays(12-8, 6-2) matched a season low in points.

Sub-state pairings will be made official on Saturday morning. Hays will host Hutchinson in the first round of sub-state on Wednesday.

🏀 Hays girls complete perfect regular season; boys fall to Great Bend

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and powered their way to a 14-1 run-rule win over Missouri Western State in game one of the their three-game MIAA series Friday afternoon at Larks Park. The Tigers improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA while the Griffons dropped to 1-11 and 0-4 in conference play.

MWSU grabbed the lead on a Frank Gall solo homer in the the third. 

It took Tigers a bit to solve Griffon starter Lynden Bruegman, but finally broke through in a big way in the fourth following a Missouri Western error that led a big two-out rally. FHSU generated nine straight hits following the error and plated nine runs. Tytin Goebel&nbsp;tied the game with an RBI single, then Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;put the Tigers on top with an RBI double. Tony Moore and Isaiah Ural&nbsp;each recorded RBI singles to make it 4-1. After a pitching change, Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;smacked a two-run double, Derek Woolwine&nbsp;followed with a single, and then Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;launched a 3-run homer to make it 9-1. 

The Tigers added a run in the sixth on a Herrmann solo homer. In the seventh, a pair of singles and a hit batter set up a walk-off grand slam by Ural to end the game by run rule.

Ty Riley&nbsp; (4-0) struck out nine and allowed only two hits in the complete game victory. 

Ural finished had a team-best five RBIs while DeGarmo and Herrmann each drove in three. Six Tigers had two hits in the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;– The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its postseason basketball championships will remain in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium through 2030.

"Following consideration of multiple competitive bids by other communities to host the MIAA women's and men's basketball championships every March, I am pleased to announce that the MIAA Tournament will remain in Kansas City at least through the 2030 Championships,” said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy during today's announcement."

The MIAA is one of the oldest conferences in the NCAA, and we have one of the most competitive college basketball tournaments in the country every year,” continued Commissioner Racy. “Our coaches and student-athletes love competing in the historic Municipal Auditorium, and it’s exciting that leaders in Kansas City want to continue to feature the MIAA basketball championships every Spring as part of ‘March Madness’ in this great college basketball city!"

The league’s upcoming men’s and women’s basketball championships will mark the 22nd year of MIAA Madness in Kansas City’s historic Municipal Auditorium. With the Association’s previous contract expiring after the 2026 championships, MIAA presidents put the tournament up for proposals and unanimously approved a four-year extension to keep one of Division II’s best conference championships in Kansas City.

Located in downtown Kansas City, Municipal Auditorium’s 10,700-seat arena has hosted 80 NCAA men’s basketball tournament games, including nine Final Fours, which is more than any other facility. Kansas City was also recently selected as the host city for multiple upcoming NCAA championships, including the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://themiaa.com/services/go.ashx/dc5fde51-a4da-40cd-b5b6-107ae9bfa67c?elinkdata=455806">2026 NCAA Division II Fall Festival</a>.
