TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball improved to 6-4 overall on the season with a pair of wins at the Washburn Invitational on Monday. The Tigers defeated Maryville University 5-3 and then Minnesota Crookston 9-1. FHSU did not surrender any earned runs on the day. The Tigers are 3-1 so far at the event and play two more on Tuesday.

Fort Hays State 5, Maryville 3 The Tigers had a come-from-behind win in their first contest of the day. Maryville took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Tigers immediately rallied past with three runs in the fourth. They added a pair in the sixth to go up 5-2 and then allowed just one more in the bottom half of the inning.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;threw another complete game for the Tigers, fresh off her career-high 14 strikeout performance on Sunday. She finished with five strikeouts and scattered six hits in the win. All three of the runs scored against her were unearned due to Tiger errors before runs scored in third and sixth. She moved to 3-2 overall on the season.

Fort Hays State 9, Minnesota Crookston 1 (6 inn.) A big five-run third inning helped Fort Hays State run away with a run-rule win in six innings over Minnesota Crookston. The Tigers never trailed, scoring one in the first, five in the third, two in the fifth, and then one in the sixth to win in walk-off fashion.

A dropped fly ball in the first inning allowed the Tigers to score a run with two outs. Riley Blake took the loss for UMC, throwing just one inning with one run allowed. Three other UMC pitchers were used in the contest.

Fort Hays State will take on Northern State (10 a.m.) and Minot State (2 p.m.) on Tuesday to wrap up their tournament schedule.

MANHEIM, Pa. - Fort Hays State men's wrestling senior Tereus Henry&nbsp;will head into the postseason ranked No. 10 at 197 pounds in the latest NWCA NCAA Division II Coaches Rankings, released Monday by the coaches association.

A former All-American and three-time national qualifier, Henry opened his final season as a Tiger ranked eighth in the country. He was later ranked as low as 12th in December before climbing one spot in each of the last two releases.

The El Paso, Texas native is 11-5 overall this season, including a 6-1 mark in duals and an 8-3 record against Division II competition. He has five bonus-point wins on the year, including two pins, two major decisions and one technical fall.

He is 1-2 against other ranked opponents this season, including a major decision win over No. 11 Ryan Cody (Colorado School of Mines) and losses against No. 5 Jackson Kinsella (Nebraska-Kearney) and No. 14 Kaine Morris (Ashland).Henry, Cody and Kinsella will be joined by one other ranked wrestler at the Super Region VI Championships this weekend in eighth-ranked Gabe Carranza (Colorado Mesa). 🤼‍♂️ FHSU's Henry enters postseason ranked 10th at 197

Hays High senior Wyatt Kirkpatrick hasn't lived in Hays his whole life. Following a move from Owasso, Oklahoma, one of the early things the family did was attend Fort Hays State University football games.

Fast forward years later and Kirkpatrick is now a Tiger himself. The Indian senior signed his National Letter of Intent last Wednesday.

Kirkpatrick played linebacker and was the team's long snapper. That duality was an intrigue for FHSU.

As a linebacker, Kirkpatrick led Hays High with tackles at 101 this past season. He also recorded ten tackles for loss, a sack, forced two fumbles and recovered two more. His career totaled 234 tackles, 21 for loss, one sack, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and a punt block that he also scored on.

The vast majority of those stats were totaled in his two years starting on varsity. Kirkpatrick had to wait for his playing days behind other outstanding linebackers that were older than him.

Those linebackers included Gavin Meyers, Wyatt Waddell and Evan Lind. Even during Kirkpatrick's senior year he would go back and watch the film of those guys play to keep picking up learning points.

Stories like that led head football coach Tony Crough to call Kirkpatrick a "total culture kid that came up through the program." The timeline though goes further back than just high school. Crough was reviewing some old film when he looked at the kids filling the role of ball boy. Kirkpatrick along with now fellow seniors Cooper Lindenmeyer, Carter Graham and Dalton Meyers where those kids.

As Kirkpatrick looks back at his career the focus lands on the 2024 campaign. "It was a movie" he said. Among the memories he listed the cold, rainy game during the playoffs in Great Bend and the win over Eisenhower to secure the schools first ever state title game experience.&nbsp;

The Tigers scored a walk-off win in nine innings over Rockhurst by a score of 3-2 before falling by one in a 9-8 decision to Wayne State (Neb.).&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;had a complete game and career-high 14 strikeouts in the win over Rockhurst.

Fort Hays State 3, Rockhurst 2 (9 inn.) The first contest of the day was a pitcher's duel between&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;of FHSU and Madeline McCall of Rockhurst. The teams played to a scoreless tie through seven innings, so the international tiebreaking format began in the eighth. Each team scored a run in the eighth and then FHSU had a two-out rally in the ninth to flip a 2-1 deficit to a 3-2 win.

Egger reached a career-high 12 strikeouts four times at FHSU prior to Sunday, including once against Rockhurst back in 2023. However, with the pair of extra innings, she pushed her career high to 14 after recording 11 through seven. She struck out two in an inning five times throughout the contest.

After the Hawks pushed across their runner on second base to start the eighth, FHSU pushed its run across on a two-out single by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>, which extended the game another inning. In the ninth, the Hawks brought home their run on a double, but the Tigers had more two-out magic in the bottom half when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/8182">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/8187">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;delivered back-to-back RBI singles to win the game.

Wayne State (Neb.) 9, Fort Hays State 8 The Tigers never led in their second contest of the day, falling down 6-1 early before chipping away and nearly catching the Wildcats at the end. FHSU trailed 9-4 going into the seventh and produced a four-run rally that ended just short of either tying the game or taking the lead. Wayne State held on for a 9-8 win.

The Tigers had five RBIs in the game, including two from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lexi-mohr/8187">Lexi Mohr</a>&nbsp;and one from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/8182">Regan Curry</a>. Two Tiger runs were scored on wild pitches and one on a passed ball. Pierce finished 2-for-2 at the plate and scored three runs.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-fitzgerald/8203">Taylor Fitzgerald</a>&nbsp;also had two hits in the game.

The Wildcats had five different players record a multi-hit game. Leah Chance was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Fort Hays State plays back-to-back on Monday with games at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. against Minnesota Crookston and Maryville.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The teams played to a scoreless tie through seven innings, so the international tiebreaking format began in the eighth. Each team scored a run in the eighth and then FHSU had a two-out rally in the ninth to flip a 2-1 deficit to a 3-2 win.Egger reached a career-high 12 strikeouts four times at FHSU prior to Sunday, including once against Rockhurst back in 2023. However, with the pair of extra innings, she pushed her career high to 14 after recording 11 through seven. FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Fort Hays State baseball team opened its conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Sunday, winning 9-3 and 2-1 at Crowder Field. The Tigers are now 7-4 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play, while the Lions dip to 5-6 on the year and 0-2 in league action.

Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;came up huge for the Tigers in game one, going 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBI. Cade Flaherty&nbsp;tossed a gem in the second game, tossing a complete game while matching his career high with 10 strikeouts.

The Tigers and Lions will wrap up their series on Monday (Feb. 24) beginning at 1 p.m. before FHSU returns to Larks Park for three-straight weekend series.

GAME 1: Fort Hays State 9, Arkansas-Fort Smith 3 Fort Hays State set the tone early in the opener, scoring in the top of the first thanks to a two-out rally. After the first two batters of the game struck out, Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;swung at the first pitch he saw and delivered a double to center. Derek Woolwine&nbsp;then worked a walk before DeGarmo came through with an RBI single to center field.

Ty Riley&nbsp;(3-0) also took care of business from the jump, allowing just one hit over the first three innings. The righty's performance gave the Tiger bats a chance to add to its lead in the top of the third. Another two-out rally started when Herrmann was hit by a pitch. Woolwine followed with a single before DeGarmo turned in another RBI single, doubling the Tiger lead.

The home team managed to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth off three hits and a walk, but Fort Hays State answered right back with two more runs in the next half inning. Tony Moore&nbsp;led off with a double before Isiah Ural put runners on the corners with a single. Herrmann was again hit by a pitch in the next plate appearances, loading the bases for Woolwine who drove in one with a single. Another run came in to score when DeGarmo grounded into a double play, putting FHSU up 4-2.

Riley gave up just two more hits over his last two innings of work while striking out three batters in the sixth to end his day with eight strikeouts over 6 innings pitched.

The Tigers kept things rolling down the stretch, adding two runs in the sixth before scoring single runs in each of the last three frames. Moore worked a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to make the score 5-2 before Isaiah Ural lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;made the score 7-2 in the top of the seventh with another sacrifice fly before DeGarmo drove in another run in the eighth with an RBI bunt.

Branson Chavez&nbsp;came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning to slam the door and collect his third save, allowing just one run on two hits over 3.0 innings while striking out eight of the 12 batters he faced. Another bases loaded walk to Woolwine gave Fort Hays State its ninth run in the top of the ninth.

DeGarmo collected four hits in the win, while Ural finished 3-of-5 with two runs. Moore, Woolwine and Cooper Howell&nbsp;all had two hits each.

Flaherty took to the mound and also worked around a leadoff single to post a scoreless first, but the Lions were able to strike first with a run in the second.

Flaherty settled in after that, retiring nine in a row over the next three frames while allowing no more than one baserunner in any inning the rest of the way. The senior allowed just one run on five hits and three walks while striking out 10 batters over the complete game.

While Flaherty was dealing on the mound, the Tigers were unable to get much going on offense. FHSU did not manage another hit until the sixth and added another in the seventh but were unable to do anything with the baserunners.

The Tigers finally broke through in the eighth when Luis Ayala&nbsp;led off with a single. The catcher moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt before coming in to score on a two-out RBI from Moore, leveling the score at one.

The Lions stranded a man on second in the home half of the eighth before Fort Hays State took its first lead of the game in the ninth. Herrmann led off the inning with a double before Woolwine reached on a dropped fly ball, allowing Herrmann to advance to third. The first baseman later scampered home on a wild pitch, scoring an unearned, go-ahead run.

Flaherty sealed the deal by retiring the last six batters he faced, including his 10th punchout for the last out of the game.

⚾ Tigers sweep Arkansas-Fort Smith in MIAA opener

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Jayden Quaintance scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Shawn Phillips Jr. added 10 points and a career-best 11 rebounds on Sunday to help Arizona State beat Kansas State 66-54 and snap a six-game losing streak.

Quaintance, who went into the game 4 of 28 from behind the arc this season, made 2-of-4 3-pointers.

The Sun Devils (13-14, 4-12 Big 12) had lost 11 of their last 13.

Alston Mason hit a 3-pointer about 90 seconds into the game to give Arizona State the lead for good and sparked a 10-2 run that made it 12-6.

Dug McDaniel made a jumper that cut Kansas State's deficit to two points midway through the first half but ASU scored 15 of the next 20 points to make it 31-19 with 3:34 left before halftime.

The Sun Devils took a 34-28 lead into the intermission and scored 11 of the first 13 second-half points to make it 45-30 less than six minutes in and Kansas State (13-14, 7-9) trailed by at least nine the rest of the way.

David N’Guessan led the Wildcats with 20 points and 10 rebounds. McDaniel and Max Jones each scored four points on 4-of-23 shooting between them. The duo went into the game averaging a combined 23.3 points in conference play.

Kansas State, which has lost three in a row following a six-game win streak, shot a season-low 33% (22 of 66) from the field.

Amier Ali scored 11 points and Mason finished with eight assists and seven points for the Sun Devils.

INDIANOLA, Iowa -Former Hays High state champion wrestler Sarah Zimmerman has qualified for the&nbsp; NCWWC Championships. Zimmerman, who is a sophomore at NCAA Division III Simpson College (IA), went 3-1 and placed third at the&nbsp;NCWWC REGION VII hosted by Simpson College.

Zimmerman made a statement with a commanding 10-0 shutout over Wartenburg's Hope Chiatello to open her day. After falling to eventual champion and No. 2 ranked Ava Bayless, Zimmerman responded with back-to-back pins to clinch the third place finish and trip to nationals. Her final pin over Paw Hobza (Sioux Falls) came in just 27 seconds.

HOISINGTON – The Russell Broncos qualified six wrestlers for the 3-2-1A
state tournament on their way to bringing home the team championship at the
Hoisington regional tournament on Saturday.

Phillipsburg qualified seven wrestlers and finished second. 

Russell had four individual champions in the tournament, and
Phillipsburg finished with three.

Russell’s Xzander Donner (106 pounds) and Xzephren Donner (113
pounds) brought home first-place finishes along with teammates Teagen Pfeifer
(165 pounds) and Brayden Suchy (175 p[pounds).

At 190 pounds, Kolten Jones of Russell was second, and Trey
Zorn finished third at 144 pounds.

The Panthers Hunter Sission was the top finisher at 138
pounds. Seth Keeten won 144 pounds, and Blake Buresh finished first at 157 pounds.

Their teammates Kaden Sission (132 pounds) and Colen Keeten
(150 pounds) finished second. Jaden Boyle was third at 285 pounds, and Kayden
Hudson was fourth at 175 pounds. 

The Smith Center Redmen had three second-place finishers:
Landon Erickson (120 pounds), Dominick Kattenberg (215) and Kharson Montgomery (285).


Parker Hutchinson was third at 157 pounds, and Isaac
Stansbury fourth at 113 pounds. 

Trego qualified four wrestlers for the state tournament and finished
11th. 

Cass Smith (165) and Kaiden Bliss (190 pounds) finished
third, and Ashton Wynn (138) and Aaron Samson (150 pounds) each finished
fourth. 

Plainville finished 12th and had two individual
state qualifiers. 

Colby Nuss (132 pounds), and Rylan Hamel (215 pounds) both
finished fourth.

Stockton’s Emerson Lowry was a second-place finisher and the
lone qualifier for the Tigers. 

Tate Blackwill of Quinter also finished second at 113 pounds
to represent the Bulldogs at state.

At 126 pounds, Asher Haag of Ellis placed second.

🤼 Russell claims Hoisington regional team title

HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team picked up a convincing 76-60 win over fifth-ranked Pittsburg State on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum, ending a 15 game Gorilla winning streak and handing them their first loss of 2025.

The Tigers (24-2, 15-2 MIAA) poured in 51.7 percent from the floor (31-of-60), eclipsing a field goal percentage of 50 percent for the eighth time this season and posting the best shooting percentage by a Gorilla opponent this season.

The FHSU defense, meanwhile, held Pittsburg State (24-3, 16-1 MIAA) to a season-low in points. The Gorillas entered the game ranking ninth in Division II with an average of 80.5 points per night but were held to more than 20 points below that average. It was the largest margin of defeat for the Gorillas in three years (74-54 vs. UCM, 2/7/22).

Fort Hays State honored six seniors before the game, including Katie DeGarmo, Kate Dilsaver, Megan Earney, Olivia Hollenbeck, Sasha Koenig and Bailey Wilborn.

The win extends FHSU's winning streak to 11 games, tied for the eighth-longest winning streak in program history.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;totaled 11 assists in the victory, giving the junior 177 assists for the season. After tying the school record on Thursday, Loewe became the school's single season assists leader with her first assist of he game.

Pittsburg State opened the scoring but led for all of 15 seconds with Hollenbeck tied the game with a layup. The graduate student went on to score the first seven points for the Tigers, doing so with three consecutive strong post moves.

The Gorillas stopped Hollenbeck's run with a bucket before the Tigers scored nine in a row, building a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the contest, 16-4.

Wilborn opened the run with a 3-pointer before Loewe contributed a driving layup. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;then scored on three-straight trips down the floor, helping the Tigers go 8-for-9 to start the game while scoring their first eight possessions.

The Black and Gold cooled off over the back half of the first quarter, ending the frame up by a baker's dozen, 25-12.

Ellie Sterns&nbsp;promptly added to that lead with a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter after grabbing an offensive rebound. Dilsaver pushed the lead as high as 18 with a fast-break layup on the next trip down the floor, FHSU's largest lead of the game.

Pittsburg State called a timeout after that basket just 60 seconds into the quarter. The Gorillas responded to coach Amanda Davied's message, closing the gap to eight by halftime.

The Gorillas closed within six soon after the break, but a DeGarmo-led 11-point run helped Fort Hays State put the hammer down. The program's all-time leading scorer took control in the third quarter, scoring eight points during the 11-0 run and 10 points total in less than four minutes.

That spurt pushed the Tiger lead back to 17 with 14 minutes to play, 55-38. Fort Hays State led by 13 at the end of the frame, 57-44, before a pair of Gorilla 3-pointers helped the visitors pull within single digits early in the fourth, 61-53.

The fifth-year duo of DeGarmo and Hollenbeck put away the Gorillas once and for all, combining help the Tigers to an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to all but seal the deal. DeGarmo opened the run with a 3-pointer while Hollenbeck dropped in three more layups. The Tiger defense contributed by forcing three Gorilla turnovers during the run.

Hollenbeck and DeGarmo tied for the team lead with 17 points each, with DeGarmo chipping in five rebounds and Hollenbeck adding two rebounds and two steals.

Loewe recorded her fourth double-double of the season thanks to 10 points and 11 assists. It is the fifth time the point guard has totaled 10 or more assists, a feat only one other MIAA player has accomplished more than once this season.

Weeter totaled 11 points while Stearns drilled a trio of 3-pointers, finishing the game with nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Dilsaver also scored nine points, giving the Tigers six players with at least nine points.

Fort Hays State will wrap up its home schedule on Wednesday when they Tigers host Nebraska-Kearney beginning at 5:30 p.m. before turning around and taking on the Lopers three days later in Kearney to conclude the regular season.&nbsp;

🏀 No. 7 FHSU women pass Senior Day test, defeat No. 5 Gorillas

DENTON, Texas - The 20th-ranked Fort Hays State women's wrestling team will send nine individuals to the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships after placing second as a team at the NCWWC Region 8 Championships on Saturday. The Tigers had 11 of their 15 competitors place, including one champion, two that finished runner-up, three that placed both third and fourth and one that placed both fifth and sixth.

The Tigers finished higher in the standings than four ranked teams, including No. 9 Simon Fraser, No. 12 Adams State, No. 22 Schreiner and No. 22 William Jewel. Eighth-ranked Colorado Mesa took home the regional title, beating the Tigers by 25 team points, 192-167.Fort Hays State's 15 competitors combined for a 38-24 record on the day, racking up 15 pins and 27 bonus-point wins to lead the tournament in each category. The 11 Tiger placers were second-most in the field, one behind Mesa's 12 placers.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/piper-cadden/8210">Piper Cadden</a>&nbsp;claimed the regional title at 131 pounds after finishing the day 4-0. The redshirt-freshman recorded a pair of technical falls before picking up decisions in both the semifinals and championship. Cadden defeated teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/jamie-laswell/8282">Jamie Laswell</a>&nbsp;in the title match, who finished second after going 3-1 on the day with two technical falls and one decision.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/nichole-moore/8375">Nichole Moore</a>, the seventh-ranked wrestler at 138 pounds according to the most recent NWCA national rankings, finished second in her weight class after nearly completing a big rally in the title bout. Moore opened the day with a pin before adding a technical fall in the quarterfinals. She then advanced to the final with a 6-3 decision before suffering a narrow 12-11 loss against a ranked opponent. Moore fell behind 12-3 in the final bout before scoring a pair of four-point maneuvers in the final 76 seconds to close within one.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/ashlynn-goodwin/8212">Ashlynn Goodwin</a>&nbsp;(138 pounds),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/dylen-ritchey/8287">Dylen Ritchey</a>&nbsp;(145 pounds) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/isabella-renfro/8286">Isabella Renfro</a>&nbsp;(180 pounds) all placed third in their respective weight class. Ritchey led the Tigers with 19 team points after rattling off four pins on the backside, finishing the day 4-1. The freshman jumped in front 6-0 in her first bout before falling via pin but bounced back with those four-stright pins.

Goodwin also turned in a 4-1 record on the day, with the lone loss coming in the semifinals against the eventual champion at 138 pounds. The redshirt-freshman managed two wins via pin and two decisions on the day, including a 7-5 decision in the third-place bout.

Renfro finished 3-1 on the day, with her lone loss coming against the eventual champion who is nationally ranked in the semifinals. All three of the freshman's wins were bonus-point victories, including two pins and one technical fall. Renfro took eighth-ranked Paige Maher of Simon Fraser to the second round before falling via pin in the semis. It was Maher's only bout of the tournament that reached the second round.

All three fell in the third-place match but claimed the true fourth bout via no contests due to previous wins over their opponents. Josiah picked up a pair of first-period pins, while Lindsey tallied a pair of technical falls and Conley turned in two wins via decision.

Isabell followed that up with a pair of bonus-point wins in the consolation bracket before falling in the consolation semifinal. She then bounced back to record a pin in less than one minute in the fifth-place bout.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up a big win over Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon in Hays by a score of 62-58. The Tigers got past the Gorillas by scoring the final four points of the game in the final minute, making a big defensive stand in the final six minutes. The win brought the Tigers within a game of second place in the MIAA standings behind the Gorillas. FHSU is now 18-8 overall and 11-6 in the MIAA, while the Gorillas moved to 16-10 overall and 12-5 in the MIAA.

The contest was close throughout as neither team ever led by more than five points. The Tigers opened the game on a 9-4 run to lead by five before the Gorillas found a way to lead by five with 4:19 remaining before halftime. FHSU closed the first half on a 6-2 run to make the game dead even at 30-30 by halftime.

Jordan Frison was a handful for the Tigers, leading Pittsburg State with 30 points. He scored 18 of his team's 28 points in the second half after dropping 12 in the first half. He finished the game 12-of-21, but tough-as-nails defense late by the likes of R.J. Crawford and Shaun RIley&nbsp;bottled up chances at the rim for Frison to score. He also tied for a team-high six rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists to lead PSU.

Kaleb Hammeke scored 14 of his team-high 18 points and also pulled down&nbsp;10 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season. Hammeke now sits just 30 points shy of 2,000 for his career. He also had a team-high four assists. Eli Lawson&nbsp;had a breakout game, coming off the bench to score a season-high 10 points. Riley also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Hammeke&nbsp;and Pitt State's Frison started to go toe-to-toe for each of their squads. Inside the final 10 minutes, Hammeke had 12 points and Frison had eight. Frison gave Pitt State its final lead of the game, 56-54, on a step-back jumper with six minutes to play. The Tigers got the score back to even when Dan Makuna&nbsp;made a big bucket out of a hard scramble for a loose ball.

The Tigers held the Gorillas to just two points over the final six minutes of the game. A Hammeke&nbsp;jumper near the free-throw line put the Tigers up two, but the Gorillas evened the score with a bucket at the 1:46 mark. However, Hammeke was clutch at the free-throw line down the stretch, hitting a pair with 53 seconds remaining before the Tigers got another big stop. Hammeke then hit both shots of a 1-and-1 situations to put the Tigers up four.

The Gorillas scrambled to find a good look late, but took too much time as the Tigers held on by four and kept the Gorillas one point under 59, FHSU's nation's-best scoring defense average.

Evan Jackson was the only other Gorilla player to finish in double figures scoring with 14 points. The 58 points for PSU matched their season low for points in a game this season, also occurring in a loss by the same score of 62-58 to Missouri-St. Louis.

Fort Hays State has one more home game, a make-up with Nebraska-Kearney that was postponed due to weather in early January. The Tigers play the Lopers twice this coming week, at home on Wednesday night and on the road on Saturday, March 1 to close out the regular season.
