HAYS – The Hays High girls’ wrestling team had a couple of
second place finishes and one third and placed fourth at their own Prairie Classic
on Saturday at Hays High School.

Norton won the team title with 190.5 points. Colby was second
with 153, Oakley third with 152 then the Indians with 134. Plainville placed in
fifth place with 130 points.

Tionna Napue (135) and Timber Lovewell (145) both finished second
with Eleanor Stoffel in third place at 190. Napue received a bye in the first
round the won her quarterfinal and semifinals matches by fall before losing to
Oakley’s Abbygayls Jackson by fall in the finals. Lovewell won her first match
by fall then by decision in the quarterfinal and semifinal round before losing
by fall to Russell’s Jaden Ney.

Lyla Richards of Ellis went 2-1 and finished third at 140.

Plainville’s Caydence Carter finished first at 190, winning
by fall over Norton’s Cadence Greeson in the title match. Kaeleigh Klein finished
second at 100, losing by fall to Junction City’s Jaidyn Alvarado in the finals.
She had won her first three matches by fall.

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Fort Hays State men's wrestling team came out victorious in one of three matchups at the SMSU Duals on Saturday (Jan. 18). The Tigers opened the day with a 32-16 loss against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the fifth-ranked team in Division III, before bouncing back in a 28-14 win against tournament host Southwest Minnesota State. FHSU then fell to Minot State on tiebreaker criteria, 22-21, in the finale.

Four Tigers went undefeated on the day, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/a-b-stokes/8307">A.B. Stokes</a>&nbsp;(125 pounds) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/riah-ostrander/8302">Riah Ostrander</a>&nbsp;(285 pounds) both picking up a trio of wins.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/ryan-patterson/8305">Ryan Patterson</a>&nbsp;and 12th-ranked&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/tereus-henry/8295">Tereus Henry</a>&nbsp;combined for three wins at 197 pounds, with Patterson picking up a win in the first dual and Henry following with two wins.

Stokes opened the day with a 14-5 major decision before Wisconsin-Eau Claire took control with wins in six of the next seven bouts.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/marcell-dely/8293">Marcell Dely</a>&nbsp;broke up the run with a 6-3 decision at 157 pounds before&nbsp;Patterson took home a win via injury default at 197 pounds and Ostrander wrapped up the dual with a 5-1 decision.

Stokes added his second win of the day with an injury default in the first bout against Southwest Minnesota State before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/andrew-honas/8314">Andrew Honas</a>&nbsp;recorded a first-period pin to double the lead to 12-0. The Mustangs won the next three to close within 12-11, but Fort Hays State picked up wins in four of the last five matchups to secure the win.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/jacob-judd/8315">Jacob Judd</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/connor-padgett/8304">Connor Padgett</a>&nbsp;opened the run with back-to-back major decisions, while Henry and Ostrander finished things off with a 15-0 technical fall and a 4-0 decision, respectively.

Stokes opened the dual against Minot State with a dominant 15-0 technical fall, but the Beavers were then able to win the next four bouts to take a sizable 18-5 lead. With the Beavers open at 285 and the score essentially 18-11, Fort Hays State took three of the next four bouts to claw back. Judd secured his second victory of the day with an 8-3 decision before MSU bounced back with a tiebreak win.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/matthew-rodriguez/8306">Matthew Rodriguez</a>&nbsp;followed with a 12-0 major decision at 185 pounds to put the Tigers effectively within 21-18. Henry completed the comeback with a 7-5 decision, but two pins gave the Beavers the win via tiebreak criteria.

The Tigers will now jump into conference action beginning next Sunday (Jan. 26) when FHSU hosts Newman beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers opened the day with a 32-16 loss against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the fifth-ranked team in Division III, before bouncing back in a 28-14 win against tournament host Southwest Minnesota State. 🤼‍♂️ Tiger men go 1-2 in Minnesota

HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team bounced back from Thursday's home loss with an 84-60 win over Northwest Missouri State. The Tigers (14-2, 5-2 MIAA) hit 53.8 percent from the floor in the win, their highest shooting percentage against a Division II team this season. The win is Fort Hays State's fourth conference victory by at least 20 points this season.

The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first quarter, with the lead changing hands five times alongside five ties. The Bearcats led by as many as four midway through the frame before the Tigers closed the quarter on a 9-3 run, taking the lead for good.

Fort Hays State started to pull away in the second quarter after outscoring the Bearcats 26-11 in the frame. The Tigers hit a blistering 63.3 percent from the floor in the opening half (19-of-30), including a run of eight-straight made field goals over a five-minute stretch that pushed the lead to 15. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;hit four shots during the run, while Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;added seven points. DeGarmo later scored the final three points of the half, giving FHSU a 47-30 lead at halftime.

A layup from Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;and five points from Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;helped the Tigers push the lead to 24 early in the third quarter, 54-30. Dilsaver continued to impress throughout the frame, with the senior totaling 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the third quarter alone.

The Bearcats responded with a 9-0 run over the heart of the third quarter to close within 15 before the Tigers scored nine in a row themselves to push the lead back to 24.

Fort Hays State continued to add to its lead in the fourth quarter, scoring 14-straight points after forcing the Bearcats into seven-consecutive misses and two turnovers. Bailey Wilborn's&nbsp;second basket of the day put the Tigers up by as many as 32 with 3:23 to play.

Five Tigers scored in double figures for the fourth time this season, including a team-high 15 points from both DeGarmo and Weeter. Hollenbeck and Dilsaver both contributed 14 points each, while Brooke Loewe&nbsp;totaled 13 points and added 11 assists for her third double-double of the year.

Fort Hays State turned the ball over a season-low five times, the lowest total for the Tigers in nearly two years (three turnovers at Nebraska-Kearney, 2/25/23). The Tigers outrebounded Northwest by 11, 42-31, and doubled them up in scoring in the paint, 44-22.

Now with 1,670 career points, Hollenbeck moved into fifth place on the all-time scoring list at Fort Hays State, moving past Petrece Faulkner (1,657 points, 1989-93).

The Tigers will now hit the road for a four-game road trip beginning Thursday (Jan. 23) when they take on Rogers State beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 No. 7 Tiger women bounce back with big win over Bearcats

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 25 points and Zeke Mayo scored 24 to lead&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">No. 9</a>&nbsp;Kansas over Kansas State 84-74 on Saturday.

Kansas (13-4, 4-2 Big 12) built a big lead to start the game and then kept K-State at arm's length. The Wildcats (7-10, 1-5) never got closer than six points.

Mayo had 14 points in the first half. Dajuan Harris Jr. had nine in the first half and six in the second.

With a chance to cut the Wildcats’ deficit to five, Max Jones missed a corner 3-pointer with 2:32 remaining.

Coleman Hawkins led the Wildcats with 15 points and 10 assists.

Kansas State: The Wildcats need to avoid big runs. A 14-0 run to start the game made it an up-hill climb all day. The Jayhawks' biggest lead was 16 points.

Kansas: The Jayhawks need KJ Adams Jr. to heal quickly. Adams suffered a partially separated right shoulder against Iowa State on Wednesday and is expected to miss several games. The Jayhawks got little production outside of Dickinson from their inside players.

The 14-0 run. Kansas hit five of its first six shots, including going 3 of 3 from beyond the arc, while K-State missed its first seven shots. The Wildcats went into halftime trailing 39-29.

K-State managed to stay in the game despite shooting just 23.1% from 3-point range. The Wildcats were just 2 of 15 in the first half. They shot 4 of 11 after halftime.

Kansas State remains on the road Wednesday night at No. 25 Baylor. Kansas visits TCU on Wednesday night.

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball wraps up a three-game homestand on Saturday when it plays host to Northwest Missouri State. Tipoff for the second meeting between the teams this season is set for 4 p.m. The Tigers enter at 11-4 overall, 4-2 in the MIAA, while the Bearcats are 4-12 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State won the first meeting of the season with Northwest Missouri State by a score of 58-39 in Maryville. It was the first win for FHSU in Maryville since the 2012-13 season, snapping an eight-game win string by the Bearcats on their home floor against the Tigers. The Tigers have a chance for their first regular season sweep of the Bearcats in conference play since the 2012-13 season. FHSU has won two of the last three meetings overall with NWMSU and won 57-49 last year in Hays.

The Tigers are coming off a 61-50 win over Missouri Western in Hays on Thursday night. The Tigers have held the opposition to 50 points or less in five of their last six games, going back to December 20. In the process the Tigers took over the national lead in scoring defense following their 69-44 win over Emporia State on January 9. They continue to lead that category, now at 58.0 points allowed per game this season.

The Bearcats are coming off a 74-69 loss at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night. The Bearcats have lost five of their last six games, with the lone win a one-point decision over Central Missouri in Warrensburg on January 9. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;reached another major milestone on Thursday night in the win over Missouri Western. He is now the only player in program history to have the combination of 500 assists and 500 rebounds in a career. Hammeke is the only active NCAA Division II player to have 1,500 points, 500 assists, and 500 rebounds in a career. He is one of only five active players at all NCAA levels to accomplish the feat in the three categories. The other four are NCAA Division I players, which includes Mark Sears of Alabama, RJ Davis of North Carolina, Caleb Love of Arizona, and Dayvion McKnight of Xavier. Hammeke and Davis are the only two of the group who have done it at one school.

The Tigers enter the contest 13-2 overall and 4-2 in league action after suffering a one-point defeat against Missouri Western Thursday evening. It was the second time the Tigers have lost to the Griffons by one point in less than two weeks. The Bearcats, meanwhile, lost at Nebraska-Kearney 71-64 on Thursday to dip to 9-8 on the year and 2-5 in MIAA contests.

Fort Hays State leads Division II in attendance this season, averaging 1,728 fans per home contest. That total would rank in the top 100 in Division I and is more than 272 DI programs.

The Tigers rank in the top 10 nationally in several statistical categories, including assists per game (19.1, third), assist/turnover ratio (1.31, fifth), defensive rebounds per game (30.8, seventh) and scoring margin (plus-18.9, 10th). FHSU also leads the conference in field goal percentage defense, limiting teams to a shooting percentage of 34.0 percent.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;needs one point to move into a tie for fifth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU (Petrece Faulkner - 1,657 career points - 1989-93). The graduate student is fourth in the league this season in scoring, averaging 16.9 points per night. She also ranks second in the MIAA in steals (2.4 per game) and third in blocks (1.8 per game). Hollenbeck's shooting percentage of 64.1 percent ranks fourth in all Division II.

Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;is closing in on a pair of milestones. The graduate student needs 35 rebounds to tie Kate Lehman for the school record in rebounds (1,109 career boards). She is also just 32 points away from becoming the second player in school history to score 2,000 career points.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;continues to lead the conference in assists, now with 106 on the season for an average of 7.1 per game. She is second in the country in total assists and third in assists per game.

Hollenbeck averages 16.0 points per game in 10 career matchups with Northwest. The forward averages 11.8 points against all other teams.

The Tigers are 25-11 all-time against the Bearcats, including a 13-2 edge in games played in Hays. FHSU has won three in a row against Northwest, 13 of the last 14 since 2018 and 21 of the last 23 since 2011. The Tigers have won 13-straight home games against Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats last won in Hays on December 30, 2006, the first-ever MIAA meeting between the two teams. That game was FHSU's first-ever home conference game as a member of the MIAA. 🏀 Friday's high school basketball scores

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;The Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field teams made an impressive start to the new year as the indoor season rolled on at the Washburn Rust Buster on Friday. Numerous Tigers claimed top-10 finishes, while five recorded NCAA Division II national qualifying marks.

The men's team had several standout performances, including three national qualifying marks.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/hayden-albright/8477">Hayden Albright</a>&nbsp;improved his national qualifying time in the 60-meter dash, placing&nbsp;fifth with a time of 6.83. The senior later finished in second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.53, achieving another national qualifying mark in the process.

Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;delivered the other national qualifying performance, winning the pole vault with a top clearance of 16-6.75.<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/christian-darrah/8512">Christian Darrah</a>&nbsp;also secured an individual title, placing first in the 3,000-meter run with an impressive time of 8:26.46. He was closely followed by teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jaret-pfizenmaier/8499">Jaret Pfizenmaier</a>, who secured second place with a time of 8:27.39.

The Tigers showcased their depth in the 200-meter dash, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/nakari-morrical-palmer/8496">Nakari Morrical-Palmer</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/toby-wahlmeier/8507">Toby Wahlmeier</a>&nbsp;tying for eighth place at 21.89.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/nolan-churchman/8479">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;followed in 10th place, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/avrey-albright/8476">Avrey Albright</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/drew-tolar/8535">Drew Tolar</a>&nbsp;finished in 11th and 12th, respectively.

Clark's success in the field was complemented by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/nolan-churchman/8479">Nolan Churchman</a>, who placed third in the long jump with a leap of 23-5.25. Churchman also excelled on the track, finishing seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58.The women's team delivered equally strong performances, led by two national qualifying performances in field events.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/annabeth-baalmann/8389">Annabeth Baalmann</a>&nbsp;cleared the national qualifying threshold in the pole vault for the third time in as many meets this season, finishing second with a top mark of 12-2.50.In the field events,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/liberty-booker/8390">Liberty Booker</a>&nbsp;earned third place in the shot put with a throw of 44-10.25, achieving another provisional mark. Booker also placed ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 48-10.00, capping off a stellar day.

The Tigers excelled in the distance events, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/taylor-hoskinson/8444">Taylor Hoskinson</a>&nbsp;finishing second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:26.37.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/ashlyn-harbaugh/8397">Ashlyn Harbaugh</a>&nbsp;followed in fourth place at 10:39.80, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/abbye-hudson/8399">Abbye Hudson</a>&nbsp;rounded out the top performers in ninth place, clocking 10:52.43.In the sprints and middle-distance events,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/reba-mader/8402">Reba Mader</a>&nbsp;placed eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.99, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/eden-bathurst/8441">Eden Bathurst</a>&nbsp;finished ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.42. In the 60-meter hurdles,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/chloe-mader/8449">Chloe Mader</a>&nbsp;delivered a strong performance, placing ninth with a time of 9.51.The Tigers' impressive showing at the Washburn Rust Buster bodes well for the remainder of the indoor season. Fort Hays State will return to action next Friday (Jan. 24) at the Rumble in the Jungle Invitational in Pittsburg, Kansas.

GARDEN CITY - The Hays High basketball teams resumed Western Athletic play Friday with a pair of wins in Garden City.

GIRLS: #6-5A Hays 63, #7-6A Garden City 21 Both of the girls teams entered the matchup with a state ranking next to their names.

Hays used a 19-0 lead to blow open a two point game in the first half and never looked back in a 63-21 victory. Hays never trailed scoring the first four points of the game on steals and layups by Kenlee Winter. The Indians still had a two point lead at 11-9 with one minute left in the first quarter.

Hays scored the final five of the first and then the first 14 points of the second for a 30-9 lead. The 19-0 run put away any thoughts of the Indians dropping the road game to bed. The Indian defense didn't allow a second quarter field and just four free throws. Hays led 38-13 at halftime.

Hays only allowed eight second half points and none in the fourth quarter. The Indians outscored the Buffaloes 17-8 in the third quarter and 8-0 in a continuous clock fourth quarter.

Hays improves to 8-0 with the victory and 2-0 in WAC play. Garden City falls to 6-4, 1-2. The Indians travel to Wichita to take on Independent on Monday. The varsity game starts at 3:00. There will be no sub-varsity games.

BOYS:&nbsp;Hays 69, Garden City 50 Hays High made a season high thirteen three pointers on their way to a 69-50 win over Garden City.

The Indians never trailed. The score was tied once at two points a piece. Garden City got within two points at 10-8 and had the ball three times but did not score.

Hays led 16-8 after the first quarter and pushed their advantage into double digits twice. The Buffaloes scored five points in the final fifteen seconds of the second quarter to cut the Hays lead down to 32-27 at halftime.

Hays hit seven three pointers in the first half which matched a season high for an entire game. They added six more in the second half.

The Indians hit their first four shots of the third quarter to build a 42-27 advantage. The Buffaloes did respond back with six straight points to get the Indian lead to single digits one final time.

Hays responded by outscoring Garden City 27-17 rest of the way for the 69-50 victory.&nbsp; Johnny Cano scored a career high 21.

Hays evens their record at 4-4 and now 2-0 in conference play. Garden City falls to 3-7, 1-2.&nbsp;The Indians travel to Wichita to take on Independent on Monday. The varsity game starts at 3:00. There will be no sub-varsity games.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The NCAA announced on Friday (Jan. 17) it will add women's wrestling as its 91st championship sport after Divisions I, II and III approved the addition at the Association's annual Convention in Nashville. The first official NCAA Championship will be held in 2026. Women's wrestling now advances from the NCAA&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2016/3/2/emerging-sports-for-women.aspx" target="_blank">Emerging Sports for Women</a>&nbsp;program to become a national collegiate championship, featuring female athletes from all three divisions competing against one another.

There were 76 women's wrestling programs at NCAA schools in 2023-24, with projections pointing to an additional 17 programs in 2024-25. More than 1,200 women wrestlers are competing at NCAA schools today. The sport is also diverse. At least 45 percent of the student-athletes competing are of diverse or international backgrounds.

The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics oversees the Emerging Sports for Women program and worked with wrestling organizations throughout the process. "The NCAA's approval of women's wrestling as its 91st championship is a groundbreaking achievement that reflects the continued rise and strength of women's sports," said Ragean Hill, chair of the committee and executive associate athletics director/senior woman administrator at Charlotte.

Women's wrestling is the sixth emerging sport to earn NCAA championship status. Since the emerging sports program was established in 1994, based on a recommendation from the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, five women's sports have earned NCAA championship status: rowing (1996), ice hockey (2000), water polo (2000), bowling (2003) and beach volleyball (2015). In the 2023-24 academic year, these sports collectively included nearly 14,000 student-athletes, about 6% of the total student-athletes competing in NCAA women's championship sports, according to the most recent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2018/10/10/ncaa-sports-sponsorship-and-participation-rates-database.aspx" target="_blank">NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates data</a>. Women's wrestling accounted for an additional 1,226 student-athletes in 2023-24.

Fort Hays State University is now in its second year with wrestling as one of it's nine sports for women to compete in at the NCAA level. The current 2024-25 season is the first in which FHSU is competing in events as a team, already making waves with a 7-2 dual record as of January 17 and a few members receiving national recognition in rankings. The FHSU program has grown from 17 members of the initial 2023-24 roster who redshirted and competed in open tournaments unattached, to 28 this year. Fort Hays State is currently the only NCAA school in Kansas with women's wrestling.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State grinded out a 61-50 win over Missouri Western on Thursday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers closed the game on a 15-3 run in the final eight minutes to get past the Griffons and split the regular season series between the teams. FHSU moved to 11-4 overall, 4-2 in the MIAA, while MWSU moved to 11-6 overall, 3-4 in the MIAA.

The first half was close throughout, as a five-point lead by the Tigers (11-6) was the largest lead before halftime. The lead changed hands six times and the score was tied five times. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;and Kyle Grill&nbsp;combined for 20 of Fort Hays State's 26 points in the first half. The Tigers clung to a 26-24 lead at the break after Hammeke made a 3-point field goal for the final bucket of the first half.

Missouri Western opened the second half on a 20-11 burst to take its largest lead of seven points (44-37) at the 12:13 mark. FHSU immediately went on an 8-0 run following the lead growing to seven. Muhamed Kante&nbsp;provided the first five points of the run, then Grill capped it with a 3-point field goal to put the Tigers on top by one. The Griffons briefly led once more before the Tigers' run to close the game. A Grill 3-pointer with 4:28 to go pushed the Tiger lead to six and then a Traejon Davis&nbsp;bucket made it an eight-point game with 3:33 to play.

Hammeke put an emphatic finish on the win late for FHSU as he drove to the basket for a dunk with 2:30 to go and then tipped in his own miss at the 1:40 mark to make the lead nine. With that offensive rebound on the tip, Hammeke reached 500 rebounds in his career. He became the first Tiger to have both 500 assists and 500 rebounds in a career to go with his all-time scoring record at FHSU which grew to 1,786 points with a team-high 19 points in the game. He was 8-of-12 from the field, pulled down five rebounds, and dished out a team-high four assists.

Grill was right behind Hammeke in scoring with 18 points, hitting 3-of-7 3-point field goal attempts. It was Grill's second-highest point total in a game this season. Shaun Riley&nbsp;led the Tigers in rebounds with seven. Kante and Davis each had eight points in the game. FHSU finished at 46.9 percent from the field, while MWSU shot 38.3 percent from the field.

Zane Nelson led the Griffons with 18 points, while Kiani Saxon added 10. Julius Dixon was close to a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds and eight points.

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 18) against Northwest Missouri State. The Tigers are looking for a season sweep against the Bearcats after winning by 19 in Maryville earlier this season. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS – The TMP-Marian basketball teams showed little rust after
more than 25 days off. Both teams took down the
Ellis Railers in their home openers Thursday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

GIRLS: TMP 66, Ellis 33 The Lady Monarchs (3-4, 2-1 MCL) opened the game on a 16-4 run and never
trailed. Brooke Koenigsman scored a season-high 25 points in a 66-33 victory over
the Railers.

Koenigsman scored nine points in the first quarter while the
Monarchs built a 20-7 lead.

Already leading by double figures to open the second quarter,
the Monarchs put together a 14-5 run, taking their largest lead of the first
half at 34-12 on a Shyanne Yost layup. Yost scored a season-high 10 points with
a little more than two minutes left in the first half.

Ellis (5-4, 2-2 MCL)was able to close within two at halftime but TMP still
held the 36-17 lead at the break.

Koenigsman led all scorers with 24 points, and Shyanne Yost
scored 10 points. 

The Monarchs will take on Hill City in the first round of
the MCL tournament Saturday at approximately 4:00 p.m.

BOYS: TMP 56, Ellis 45 The TMP boys used a pair of 9-0 first-half runs and then
needed a big second half on their way to a double-digit win over the Railers.

Caden Dinkel closed out the second quarter with a three-pointer
and added his second on the first possession of the second half, putting TMP up
29-19.

In the third quarter, Ellis erased the 10-point deficit thanks
to five straight turnovers and an empty possession by the Monarchs. 

Ellis then briefly led 36-34 but TMP’s Carson Liles got a
field goal to close out the third quarter at 36 each.

TMP’s Jabob Seib and Schmeidler took control of the game,
combining to score 14 points to open the fourth quarter and the Monarchs never
trailed again in a 56-45 victory.

Ty Schmeidler led TMP with 16 points. Cade Dinkel added 15
points and Jacob Seib scored 14 points.

TMP will take on Russell in the third game of the day at the MCL tournament at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team fell to Missouri Western by one point for the second time in less than two weeks, losing 70-69 at home Thursday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers (13-2, 4-2 MIAA) led by as many as 14 in the first half, but a 3-point barrage from the Griffons (11-4, 6-1 MIAA) helped the visitors rally after halftime.

Missouri Western took control early, leading by as many as 12 seven minutes into the contest. Back-to-back buckets from graduate students Katie DeGarmo and Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;helped the Tigers stop the Griffon run before a DeGarmo 3-point play narrowed the deficit to 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Tigers proceeded to flip all the momentum in the second quarter, with FHSU scoring the first 18 points to race in front by double digits themselves, 33-22. Combined with DeGarmo's 3-point play to end the first quarter, the 21-0 run by the Tigers was the longest by an FHSU squad during the Talia Kahrs&nbsp;era.

The Tiger defense was locked in over the first seven minutes of the frame, forcing the Griffons to miss eight shots from the floor and five free throws while creating a pair of turnovers.

Fort Hays State, on the other hand, took advantage at the charity stripe during the frame, hitting all 10 of its attempts. Hollenbeck and Talexa Weeter&nbsp;both scored eight points each in the quarter. The Tigers led by as many as 14 with one minute to play before halftime thanks to another DeGarmo layup, but a Griffon 3-pointer narrowed the gap to 41-30 at halftime.

Missouri Western slowly chipped away at the lead early in the second half, but FHSU had a response each time. The Tigers still held a 10-point lead five minutes into the third quarter before a 13-5 Griffon run narrowed the margin to 56-54 with 10 minutes to play.

The Griffons, who hit the second-most 3-pointers per game in Division II, lived up to that billing in the second half. The visitors hit 7-of-14 from behind the arc to storm back, including a perfect 4-of-4 effort from Kassandra Caron.

Both teams struggled to score early in the fourth quarter, combining for just five points in the first four minutes of action. MWSU's Meredith Rieker then hit a 3-pointer to tie the score with 5:42 on the clock, but DeGarmo answered with another traditional 3-point play to put the Tigers back on top with 5:02 to play.

Caron then scored eight-straight points for the Griffons, helping the visitors jump back in front by five with less than three minutes to go.

After missing three in a row from the floor and turning the ball over once, Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;helped the Tigers punch back with her second 3-pointer of the game. Western point guard Alyssa Bonilla then converted a traditional 3-point play on the next trip down the floor to push the lead back to five, but Brooke Loewe&nbsp;responded with a triple of her own to close things back to two with 1:50 on the clock, 70-68.

Hollenbeck came up with her third block of the game on the next trip down the floor, but FHSU was unable to take advantage on offense. The Tiger defense was then able to clamp down again, forcing a shot clock violation with 34 seconds remaining. Loewe then tried a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go that was off the mark, but Dilsaver collected the offensive rebound to keep hope alive.

After a pair of Griffon fouls, DeGarmo went to the line with a chance to tie things up with two makes. After the Tigers hit 18 of their first 19 from the line on the day, DeGarmo managed to make one of the two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to allow the Griffons to hang on.

The Griffons have now won four in a row against FHSU and six of the last eight meetings since March 2022. All six of those MWSU wins have been by three or fewer points, including four one-point decisions.

DeGarmo led the team with 21 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and the 39th of her career. Dilsaver totaled 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds, while Hollenbeck added 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Bonilla led the Griffons with 21 points, six assists and six steals.

The Tigers hit a season-low 36.7 percent from the floor (22-of-60), while Missouri Western knocked down 44.8 percent from the floor (26-of-58) and from behind the arc (13-of-29). Fort Hays State collected eight more rebounds than the Griffons, 40-32, while both teams turned the ball over 17 times. The Tigers scored 22 points in transition for the second-straight contest, their highest total against a DII opponent this season.

Fort Hays State will look to bounce back Saturday (Jan. 18) when the Tigers host Northwest Missouri State beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp;&nbsp;
