The Fort Hays State women's basketball team slid to 11th in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll, released Tuesday by the coaches association. Fort Hays State fell out of the D2CSC Media Poll, moving into the top spot of the receiving votes category.

Fort Hays State now stands at 14-2 overall after splitting a pair of home games last week. All but one of FHSU's wins have been double-figure victories, including nine by 20 or more points, while both of the Tigers' losses have been by just one point.

This is the fourth time the Tigers have been ranked 11th in the coaches poll during the team's DII era, and the first since February 2, 2021. That poll was the first release of the coaches poll during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season.

The Tigers are 7-0 when ranked 11th in the coaches poll and 171-45 all-time when listed in the poll.&nbsp;Fort Hays State has now been listed in 113 different releases of the WBCA DII Top 25.Fort Hays State topping the receiving votes category in the latest media poll is the first time the Tigers have not been listed in the top 25 in either poll this season.

Only one other MIAA program is listed in either poll this week, with Pittsburg State moving up to No. 8 in each release.

Fort Hays State will open a four-game road swing Thursday when the Tigers take on Rogers State in Claremore, Okla. beginning at 5:30 p.m.

🏀 Tiger women slide to No. 11 in latest WBCA rankings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball remains among the receiving votes section of the NABC Top 25 Poll. The latest edition released on Tuesday has Fort Hays State with 21 voting points, the fourth-most among teams receiving votes outside of the Top 25. This is the fourth-straight week the Tigers received votes in the poll.

Washburn remained the No. 1 team in the nation in both the NABC and D2CSC Top 25 Polls for a second-straight week. The Ichabods are off to a 17-0 start to the season, one of only two undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division II. Fort Hays State is the only other MIAA program referenced in the latest NABC poll. The Tigers are the fifth-highest listed team among schools in the Central Region, with four currently in the Top 25 and two joining FHSU in the receiving votes section.

Two of Fort Hays State's four losses this year have been to current NABC Top 25 ranked teams. The Tigers fell to Washburn back on December 7 and to Southwest Minnesota State (currently No. 15) in the season opener back on November 8. Washburn was ranked No. 3 when it met FHSU back in December and Southwest Minnesota State began the year receiving votes, while FHSU was ranked No. 16 in the preseason poll. FHSU also has a win over a current NABC Top 25 team in MSU Denver, which holds the No. 13 ranking this week.

Fort Hays State goes on the road this week for a pair of challenging games in MIAA play. The Tigers play at Rogers State (14-6) on Thursday night (Jan. 23) and then Central Oklahoma (9-8) on Saturday (Jan. 25). It will be the only meeting of the regular season with both schools.

🏀 Tigers still receiving votes in latest NABC rankings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State track and field senior Jacob Clark&nbsp;has earned his second MIAA Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor of the season, announced Tuesday by the league office.

Clark picked up the honor after placing first at the Washburn Rust Buster last Friday (Jan. 17) in Topeka, Kan. with a top clearance of 16-6.75 (5.05m). His top mark of the day was seven inches higher than his nearest competition.

That performance would be the best mark in the MIAA this season and would rank seventh across all Division II, however his top clearance of the season of 17-2.75 (5.25) is tied for first in the country.

The Nottingham, England native is undefeated in competition this season, placing first at all three meets so far in 2024-25.Clark is the first Tiger to earn multiple MIAA Athlete of the Week honors in a single season since fellow pole vaulter Ryan Stanley did so in consecutive weeks during the 2021-22 indoor season.

Clark and the rest of the Tigers will return to action next Friday (Jan. 24) when they head to Pittsburg, Kan. for the Rumble in the Jungle Invitational.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Norton girls are ranked first in the 321A team rankings
with Oakley second, Russell third, Plainville fourth and Stockton fifth.

The Hoxie boys are first, Norton second, Phillipsburg third,
Russell fifth and Hill City ninth in the 321A boys team rankings.

The Hays girls’ have six wrestlers ranked this week. Senior
Tionna Napue moves down a spot to No. 2 at 135. Freshman Eleanor Stoppel
remains second at 190. Sophomore Timber Lovewell holds on to the No. 3 spot at
145, Junior Lexie Barnett remains third at 155 and sophomore Kenlee Vehige
remains fourth at 120. Sophomore Emersyn Copper is down a spot to No. 6 at 100.

Despite beating a ranked 6A team and still being unbeaten,
the Hays High girls’ basketball team drops two spots to No. 8 in the latest 5A rankings
from the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association released Monday afternoon. The
Indians are one of two undefeated teams in 5A West (Topeka Seaman), and one of
three overall in Class 5A.

The Colby girls move up one spot to No. 5 in Class 3A while
Hoxie drops a spot to 6th in Class 2A. Quinter moves into the 1A Division 1
poll at No. 9.

The Great Bend boys are up three to No. 6 in Class 5A,
Logan-Palco remains 3rd and Otis-Bison drops a spot to 10th in 1A Division 2.

🏀 HHS girls fall in latest KBCA rankings

MANHEIM, Pa. - Fort Hays State men's wrestling senior Tereus Henry&nbsp;moved up to 11th at 197 pounds in the latest NWCA NCAA Division II Coaches Rankings, released Monday by the coaches association.

The El Paso, Texas native moved up one spot in the poll after sitting in 12th entering the holiday break. The former All-American opened the season ranked as high as eighth in the country.

Henry is 9-4 this season, including a 4-0 mark in duals and a 6-2 record against other Division II opponents. He's racked up four bonus-point wins on the year, including two major decisions, one pin and one technical fall.

Henry picked up a pair of wins at the SMSU Duals in his first action since the holiday break, recording one technical fall and one decision.He is one of three MIAA wrestlers in the national top 15 at 197 pounds alongside Nebraska-Kearney's Jackson Kinsella, who ranks fifth, and 13th-ranked Emmanuel Skillings from Central Oklahoma.

The men's wrestling team will enter conference action this weekend when the Tigers host Newman beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 26).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 2025 class will be inducted during the Kansas Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame ceremony at the Coach Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter National Football Foundation Banquet. ATLANTA (AP) — The pass seemed to hang up there forever. Did it feel like seven weeks? Did it feel like 10 years?

What a great debate for Ohio State fans to have forever.

When that&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/OhioStateFB/status/1881552148040958413">teardrop of a throw</a>&nbsp;from Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard on third-and-11 finally landed, light as a feather, in the hands of receiver Jeremiah Smith late in the fourth quarter Monday, Ohio State had locked up what would be a 34-23 victory over Notre Dame for its sixth national title and first in a decade.

It was that 56-yard gain that snuffed out a feverish Notre Dame comeback and made the Buckeyes the champion of the sport's first 12-team playoff, just as they were champions of its first four-team tournament a decade ago.

“They were running man coverage and I said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna let this loose and let him make a play on it,’” Howard said of a play that felt about 100 years removed from Ohio State's once program-defining “Three yards and a cloud of dust.”

This was a win that hardly anyone thought possible a mere seven weeks ago — Nov. 30 — when a 13-10 loss to Michigan led to a near-riot on the field and questions over whether coach Ryan Day would keep his job when the calendar flipped.

“It’s a great story about a bunch of guys who have just overcome some really tough situations, and at the point where there’s a lot of people that counted us out (they) just kept swinging and kept fighting,” Day said.

Buckeyes were on cruise control, then suddenly, ND came to life

It might be that much sweeter because of how it went down in a jam-packed stadium in the middle of SEC country that looked like a Christmas tree — Ohio State fans on one half in red, Notre Dame's on the other in green.

Trailing 31-7, Notre Dame scored two touchdowns and two 2-point conversions to make it a one-score game late in the fourth quarter. The in-stadium camera found legendary Irish coach Lou Holtz in his luxury box, and he ignored all those booing Buckeye fans and flashed a thumbs-up.

But Notre Dame's time was running out. After stopping the Buckeyes on their first two plays and using their timeouts, the Irish put Christian Gray — whose interception&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/penn-state-notre-dame-orange-bowl-score-34fe8fc6414366145cfaa10f0147964c">wrapped up Notre Dame's semifinal win</a>&nbsp;over Penn State — in single coverage on Smith.

Smith got behind Gray on the right sideline and Howard dropped his best pass of the season into the hands of the second-team All-American.

It set up a field goal that started the celebration in earnest, and also helped Ohio State&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-state-notre-dame-cfp-national-championship-betting-line-4e59407b67c901d23a06f511099c45bc">cover the 8 1/2-point spread</a>&nbsp;at BetMGM Sportsbook.

“It was do or die, it was that type of down,” Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said. “He’s a heck of a player. He’s difficult to cover.”

Howard and Judkins make transfer portal pay off for Ohio State

Howard, a transfer-portal success story from Kansas State, threw for 231 yards and two scores, but nothing will beat the pass to Smith with everything on the line.

The receiver, who had been bottled up by Texas in the semifinals then fairly quiet for most of this game, finally got loose for the kind of play he’s been making all year. He finished with five catches for 88 yards.

“We felt at the end we wanted to give Jeremiah that shot,” Day said. “We really hadn't thrown it all night, but I thought, ‘Know what, let’s be aggressive, let's do this and lay it on the line.'”

Ohio State didn't really look like a team that needed to take risks after scoring touchdowns on its first four possessions, then adding a field goal on its fifth.

When Quinshon Judkins (100 yards, 11 carries, three TDs), a transfer from Mississippi who highlighted Ohio State’s judicious use of the ever-growing portal, busted a 70-yard run to set up the score that made it 28-7, this game looked over.

It wasn’t, and now Freeman will have to answer a few tough questions — one about the failed fake punt in the third quarter that turned into a field goal for a 31-7 lead; the other about sending Mitch Jeter in for a short field goal attempt while down 16 and facing fourth-and-goal from the 9. It might have looked like a better call had Jeter’s kick not clanged off the left upright.

“I know it’s still a two-score game, but you have a better probability of getting 14 points than you do 16 points,” Freeman said.

Ohio State dominated most of the night, and all through the playoffs

Really, though, Ohio State was the better team. The Buckeyes outgained Notre Dame 445 yards to 308. Howard completed his first 13 passes and never really got stopped. Ohio State punted a grand total of once.

The Buckeyes rolled through four games in the new, expanded playoff — what great timing for Ohio State that the tournament swelled to a dozen teams in a year it didn't even play for the Big Ten title — by an average score of 36-21.

Ohio State was seeded eighth, but the seedings were pretty much meaningless. The worse seed won every game in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, and the Buckeyes dominated in this title-game showdown of No. 7 vs. No. 8.

A fine ending to a season that almost got away

It puts to rest, for now, any angst about that 13-10 Michigan loss in November — Ohio State’s fourth straight in the series — that ended with a brawl after Wolverine players tried to plant a flag at midfield.

The whole scene left a lot of folks, both in and out of Buckeye circles, thinking Day, in his sixth season, had outlived his usefulness on a campus that hadn’t tasted a title in a decade.

Instead, the Ohio State marching band can dot the “I” next time with the national-title trophy. And Day can join a list of title-winning coaches with Urban Meyer (2014) Jim Tressel (2002), Woody Hayes ("Three yards and a cloud of dust") and Paul Brown (who went on to become the namesake of the NFL's Cleveland Browns).

Also, Day’s .873 winning percentage coming into the game was third among coaches with 50-plus games — one spot behind none other than the Notre Dame legend Knute Rockne, himself.

The Notre Dame loss means college football still has never had a Black coach win the national title.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cfp-notre-dame-king-trump-football-faf2fc685b25a887dd6eec083223a591">Freeman was trying</a>&nbsp;to become the first.

Instead, another kind of history. This marked the first time the Big Ten has taken back-to-back titles since 1942. Last year’s champion was Michigan, which was sitting home watching this one, but still played a special role in a Buckeyes redemption story hardly anyone saw coming.

🏈 Ohio State wins 1st national title since 2014, outlasting Notre Dame in CFP championship game

NORTON – The TMP-Marian Monarchs came up short on the road
against the Norton Bluejays Monday in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Continent
League tournament, falling 48-40.

TMP (3-6, 2-1 MCL) matched a season-high seven three-pointers, four of which
came in the first quarter, and they only
trailed by one at 13-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Norton (7-3, 4-0 MCL) extended the lead to eight, at 21-13, midway through
the second quarter, but TMP sophomore Jacob Seib scored six straight points to pull them within two. 

Seib scored in double figures for the third straight game and finished with 12 points.

The Bluejays scored five quick points to build a nine-point
lead midway through the third quarter.

TMP again answered and trimmed the Norton lead at 28-24.

It seemed as though Norton had an answer every time TMP
made a run. 

With Norton leading by eight again, Carson Liles banked in a three at the end of the third quarter, pulling
TMP within five at 35-30.

Norton expanded
their lead to seven in the fourth quarter at 39-32, only to see the Monarchs close within two at
41-39. 

However, the Monarchs could not get any closer in the final minutes.

Norton closed the game by outscoring
the Monarchs 7-1, with the Bluejays securing a 48-40 victory.

TMP will take Phillipsburg Thursday
in the consolation semifinals at approximately 6:15 p.m. at Al Billinger Field House.

WICHITA - Hays had their second make-up game in the month as they traveled to Wichita and faced the Independent Panthers.

GIRLS: #6 Hays 73, Independent 18 Hays scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back on the way to a 73-18 victory. A 21-3 run that started in the first quarter and lasted into the early second pushed the Indian lead to 23 points at 30-7.

Independent could never put together a run to threaten the Indians. Hays outscored the Panthers 16-3 in the second quarter for a 41-10 lead at halftime.

Hays outscored Independent in all four quarter. The Indians had an 18-6 advantage in the third and 14-2 edge in the fourth for the 73-18 victory.&nbsp;

10 players scored in the victory led by Jenna Schmeidler with 16. Zoe Winter matched a season high 14 points. Hays matched a season low with seven turnovers. Independent had 34 turnovers.

Hays(9-0) heads to the Colby Orange &amp; Black Thursday where they will face Goodland in the first round. Independent falls to 1-7.

BOYS: Hays 76, Independent 22 Hays scored the first 30 points of the game on their way to a 76-22 on Monday. It is the most points Hays has scored this season.

The Indians didn't allow any made field goals on just eight total shots by the Panthers in the first half. Hays forced 21 turnovers in the first half. Independent ended the game with 31 turnovers and made seven field goals.

The Panthers managed just four free throw makes and Hays led 43-4 at half.&nbsp;

The Hays lead continued to increase as they went up 51-4 two minutes into the third quarter. The Panthers managed four field goals in the quarter including three three pointers. Hays still led 64-16 heading to the fourth.&nbsp;

Hays (5-4) has won back-to-back games for the second time this season. The Indians head to the Colby Orange &amp; Black on Thursday where they will face Concordia in the first round.

Kansas State forward Ayoka Lee will be sidelined indefinitely after an X-ray and MRI exam revealed the All-American fractured a bone in her foot in the second quarter of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll">No. 10</a>&nbsp;Wildcats'&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-state-kansas-state-score-9dd812c75d1e801072ee17f55468bd8b">win over Arizona State</a>.

The school called it “probable” that Lee will return before the end of the season, but more will be known in the coming weeks.

“It's not good,” Kansas State coach Jeff Mittie said after the 81-69 win Sunday over Arizona State. “It’s not going to be a week or two.”

Lee only played 13 minutes in the game, leaving for good with 4:21 left in the first half.

The Wildcats, who do not play again until visiting Colorado on Saturday, entered the week 19-1 and 7-0 in the Big 12, and they are riding a 14-game win streak, the fourth-longest in Division I women's basketball. The Wildcats' only loss came against No. 13 Duke in the Ball Dawgs Classic in late November.

Lee is a big reason for their success. The 6-foot-6 forward from Byron, Minnesota, is averaging 16 points on 65.4% shooting, even though she's played limited minutes because of a number of blowouts. She also is averaging 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

Lee set the women's Division I scoring record when she had 61 points against Oklahoma in January 2022. She is already Kansas State's career scoring leader with 2,482 points, and she holds school records for rebounds, blocks and field goals.

Lee also has had a history of injuries, though. She redshirted as a freshman while recovering from a knee injury, and she missed the entire 2022-23 season&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-manhattan-college-basketball-womens-kansas-d3a64345f3647364b65ddce0bb3b7c02">because of surgery</a>&nbsp;on the other knee. She also sat out several conference games a year ago after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ayoka-lee-ankle-injury-kansas-state-87bbcaff2e509fea0da1043076736901">she hurt her ankle</a>, and Mittie has limited her minutes at times this season in an effort to keep her healthy.

The Wildcats will lean more heavily on Missouri State transfer Kennedy Taylor, Imani Lester and Eliza Maupin while Lee is out.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;of Fort Hays State Men's Basketball was named the MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday. Hammeke helped FHSU to a pair of wins at home last week over Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State, averaging 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. This is the second time he has earned the honor this season after being selected back on December 30.

Last Thursday, Hammeke led the Tigers with 19 points, four assists, and four steals, while shooting 8-of-12 from the field in the 11-point win over Missouri Western. With his final rebound of the game, Hammeke reached 500 career rebounds. He became the only active NCAA Division II men's basketball player with at least 1,500 points, 500 assists, and 500 rebounds in a career and joined four players from Division I as the only five active players at all NCAA levels to accomplish the feat.

This past Saturday in a seven-point win over Northwest Missouri State, Hammeke had 16 points and dished out four assists, while playing all 40 minutes. He passed the 1,800-point mark for his career, now with 1,802.For the week, Hammeke shot 52 percent from the field overall, including 50 percent beyond the 3-point line. He has scored in double figures in all 16 games this season, helping the Tigers to a 12-4 overall mark. He recently became FHSU's all-time leading scorer in men's basketball back on January 9 when the Tigers defeated Emporia State in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Hammeke named MIAA Athlete of the Week for second time this season

Local sports fans can get a different experience this week.

The Hays High School boys’ swim team is hosting its annual invitational Tuesday at Fort Hays State University.

The meet starts at 4 p.m. at FHSU’s pool in the Tiger Aquatics Center. The aquatics center in Cunningham Hall adjoins the Gross Memorial Coliseum complex and has adequate seating for fans.

The Indian swimmers have been enjoying a banner season under first-year coach Tyler Stein, an FHSU student and former high school swimmer in Great Bend.

HHS has reached state consideration times in several events and has automatically qualified the 200-meter freestyle relay for the Class 5-1A State Championships Feb. 20-22 in Lenexa.

The Indians still have several meets at which to reach the state-qualification standards, including the Western Athletic Conference meet on Feb. 13 in Garden City.

🏊 Hays High home swim meet set for Tuesday at Tiger Aquatics Center

MANHEIM, Pa. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling is among the NWCA Top 25 for the first time in program history, released on January 16. The Tigers moved into the rankings at No. 21 for NCAA schools, thanks to a pair of individuals listed in the national rankings. FHSU is in its first year of competition as a team in 2024-25.Fort Hays State received three points for the poll since&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/nichole-moore/8375">Nichole Moore</a>&nbsp;is now ranked No. 9 at 138 and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lexie-lopez/8283">Lexie Lopez</a>&nbsp;is ranked No. 10 at 124. Team rankings are based on points generated from individuals in the national rankings. The NWCA ranks a Top 10 in each of the 10 classes.

This is the second time this season Moore and Lopez have been in the individual rankings. Moore started the season ranked No. 8 at 131 before she settled in as a mainstay for the Tigers at 138. This is the second time Lopez has held the No. 10 ranking at 124 this season.

In the supplemental poll released by The Open Mat on January 14, five Tigers received recognition among the Top 20 in each class. Lopez (No. 10 at 124),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/jamie-laswell/8282">Jamie Laswell</a>&nbsp;(No. 13 at 131),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/amanda-jaeger/8280">Amanda Jaeger</a>&nbsp;(No. 15, 131), Moore (No. 10 at 138), and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/isabella-renfro/8286">Isabella Renfro</a>&nbsp;(No. 20 at 180) received recognition. The Open Mat has FHSU at No. 19 in its tournament rankings and No. 12 in its dual rankings. The NWCA also released a new set of Regional Rankings on January 16. FHSU has 13 wrestlers listed among the Top 5 in Region 8 for their respective classes. The Tigers moved into the rankings at No. 21 for NCAA schools, thanks to a pair of individuals listed in the national rankings. FHSU is in its first year of competition as a team in 2024-25.Fort Hays State received three points for the poll since&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/nichole-moore/8375">Nichole Moore</a>&nbsp;is now ranked No. 9 at 138 and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lexie-lopez/8283">Lexie Lopez</a>&nbsp;is ranked No. 10 at 124. Team rankings are based on points generated from individuals in the national rankings. The NWCA ranks a Top 10 in each of the 10 classes.This is the second time this season Moore and Lopez have been in the individual rankings. Moore started the season ranked No. 8 at 131 before she settled in as a mainstay for the Tigers at 138. This is the second time Lopez has held the No. 10 ranking at 124 this season.In the supplemental poll released by The Open Mat on January 14, five Tigers received recognition among the Top 20 in each class. “Voice of the Wildcats.” That title belongs to the legendary sportscasters who have broadcast Kansas State University football and basketball games through the years.

Wyatt Thompson is the current and longtime Voice of the Cats, which he especially appreciates because of his roots in rural Kansas. Thompson became Voice of the Wildcats in 2002. He grew up in rural Kansas near Solomon.

Thompson became Voice of the Wildcats in 2002. He grew up in rural Kansas near Solomon.Among his interests was livestock judging in high school FFA, which included two elements: One, placing a class of livestock in the desired order; and two, stating oral reasons to a judge to describe the reasons for that placing.This process required him to make quick judgments and to state his observations articulately and accurately. In a sense, those skills also serve him well as a sportscaster.Thompson continued livestock judging at Colby Community College but found himself drawn to sports broadcasting. He made the change. In 1976, he began his career, spending time at radio stations in Great Bend and Abilene. He was recognized with the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Play-by-Play Award in 1982.From 1985 until 1989, Thompson worked at KAYS in Hays where he was the play-by-play voice at Fort Hays State. He won the Oscar Stauffer Sportscaster of the Year Award in 1989.Then Thompson moved to Denver. He was the play-by-play voice for Colorado State's football and men's basketball teams for five years. In addition to his duties at CSU, Thompson was also a sports reporter on radio and host of the Countdown to Kickoff show for the Denver Broncos.Thompson won the Colorado Broadcasting Association award for best play-by-play announcer in 2000.In 2002, he moved to K-State to become the Voice of the Wildcat, a position he still holds today. In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of legendary broadcasters who have previously served as Voice of the Wildcats:&nbsp;Dev Nelson, Mitch Holthus, Steve Physioc and Greg Sharpe.Today, Thompson is senior director of broadcasting for the K-State Athletic Department as well as Voice of the Wildcats. He&nbsp;serves as host of the Chris Klieman and Jerome Tang coaches’ shows on television and radio. In addition, he is heavily involved in various Catbacker Club, alumni and athletic department functions, frequently serving as a keynote speaker.In an era of NIL -- Name, Image, Likeness -- and the transfer portal, it seems remarkable that he is observing local players from Kansas making an impact for their home state team. For example, in football, he sees Sam Hecht from Shawnee snap the ball to Avery Johnson, who went to Maize, who then might hand off the ball to Dylan Edwards from Wichita or D.J. Giddens from Junction City – and they just might be led by a block from Hadley Panzer of Lakin.An estimated 55 Kansans are on the K-State football roster – far more than any other state.It is especially exciting to see such in-state talent perform well. According to the K-State athletic department, since 1990 K-State’s all-conference selections have come from 37 cities in Kansas.“I love broadcasting K-State sports for so many reasons,” Thompson said. “At the top of the list would be the amazing coaches and players that I get to work with daily.”He also relishes the game day experience. “You can just feel the excitement for each game, and the love this fan base has for Kansas State University and the Cats,” Thompson said.Thompson won the Hod Humiston Award for sports broadcasting from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters in 2011. Over the course of his career, Thompson has been named the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year six times. He ranks second all-time among K-State broadcasters in awards won, and fourth all-time among broadcasters in the state of Kansas.In 2022 he was inducted into the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.It's an impressive record for a farm kid from the rural community of Solomon, population 993 people. Now, that’s rural.Voice of the Wildcats. We commend Wyatt Thompson for making a difference by sharing the excitement of Power 4 football and basketball with fans across Kansas and beyond.
