“We would like for your children, ages 4 through high school age, to help us with our monthly magazine coming up in February,” said Linn Ann Huntington, the magazine’s editor.

Each month the magazine, called “ONE,” has a theme. The theme for February is: If you were with the Wise Men visiting the Baby Jesus so long ago, what gift would you give to Jesus?

“We know that the Wise Men brought Jesus special gifts. We would like to know what the children in your life would bring him,” Huntington said. “Please emphasize to the children that the gift needs to be something they own, and that they aren’t going to get it back. Once they give it to Jesus, it is his to keep.”

It would be helpful if church workers or family members could collect the responses from their kids, Huntington said.

Please include the following: The name of the church (if applicable), the child’s first name and first initial of their last name, the child’s age, what gift they would give to the Baby Jesus, and why.

Email responses to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:lmills@firstcallelliscounty.com">lmills@firstcallelliscounty.com</a>&nbsp;by Thursday, Jan. 12. Mills has volunteered to collect and sort the responses.

“Please include the name and contact information for the person submitting the responses, so we can contact you if we have questions,” Huntington said.

“It is our hope that this question can be tied into the observance of Epiphany, when the Wise Men visited the Baby Jesus. That observance was Friday, Jan. 6,” Huntington said.

She provided this example of a typical response: “Any church, Hays or Ellis; Levi Jones; age 6; I would give the Baby Jesus my kitten, McAdoo. We recently moved to a new apartment, and they don’t let us keep pets here. I figure the Baby Jesus would give McAdoo a good home. Besides, McAdoo still pees on the floor. But I figure in a stable, it’s not going to matter anyway.”

Huntington added, “We want to hear the kids’ unvarnished responses.”

Children’s input sought for February issue of magazine

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Commerce (KDC) has announced $50 million will fund a second round of projects under the Building a Stronger Economy (BASE) grant program. BASE 2.0 will continue addressing infrastructure and economic development needs that were delayed or slowed due to COVID-19 in an effort to expand the state’s base of businesses and residents.

The additional funds were designated by the Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas (SPARK) Executive Committee and approved by the State Finance Council in December.

Previous applicants that were not funded in round one will be considered for BASE 2.0 and do not need to reapply unless they would like to submit a new application. Awardees from the first round are not eligible for a BASE 2.0 award.

The Commerce Department received more than 440 applicants requesting more than $1 billion in identified projects during BASE 1.0 for the available $100 million funding. This new round will follow the same regulations established for the first round, including the requirement that awardees provide a 25% match.

County and local governments, economic development organizations, local chambers of commerce, and other stakeholders are eligible to apply. Awardees will have two years to complete their projects and utilize all awarded and required matching funds. Applications submitted are required to document how the project was delayed or affected negatively due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting downturn in economic conditions.

The deadline for submissions will be 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, January 31.

This a reminder that due to baler equipment issues at the recycling facility, until further notice all paper/cardboard recycling goods collected by the refuse collectors along the collection routes may be disposed of at the Ellis County Transfer Station rather than the standard recycling disposal site. &nbsp;

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and&nbsp;strongly encourage&nbsp;customers to temporarily hold on to paper or cardboard recycling materials if they don’t wish to have it disposed of in this manner. &nbsp;However, all recycling materials put out for disposal will continue to be collected as normal.

&nbsp;Staff hopes to have the equipment up and running very soon, and an updated public service notice will be distributed once normal operations resume.

&nbsp;City of Hays customers who have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.

The workshop series includes five online Lunch and Learn sessions.

“Over the past two years, we’ve seen an increase in people’s enthusiasm for locally sourced food, and these workshops will address common questions and concerns for farmers and small businesses who are embracing these opportunities to reach local consumers,” said Londa Nwadike, food safety specialist with KSRE and the University of Missouri. “It’s also important for farmers to understand certain legal, safety and financial parameters before choosing to sell either directly to the consumer or at a farmers’ market.” In 2022, more than 95 farmers’ markets were registered with KDA’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.

KDA offers farmers’ market and direct-to-consumer virtual workshop series

BUNKER HILL –&nbsp;Back for its 18th&nbsp;Season, Doctors on Call will begin airing on Smoky Hills PBS (SHPBS) on Tuesday, January 10th at 7 p.m.

“We are excited to be back for another season of Doctors on Call,” said Les Kinderknecht, senior producer/director of Smoky Hills PBS.&nbsp; “We have a great lineup this year with many great doctors from central and western Kansas.”

Monday, Jan. 2 and Tuesday, Jan. 3 will be picked up on Tuesday, Jan. 3. 

Routes collected Wednesday, Jan. 4 - Friday, Jan. 6 will have no change.

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed during the week. &nbsp;It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. Please make sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7 a.m., and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

City of Hays customers that may have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.

Throughout the last four and half years, Jake Gill has raised tens of thousands of dollars for non-profit organizations around the U.S. and the world.

Jake is excited to be bringing his performance to the community and families of Hays. The concert will take place at The Rose Garden Banquet Hall at 8 p.m. Jan. 6 for the “Great Christmas Regift Concert."

“I am excited to be a part of such a great event for the Hays and for Jana’s Campaign,” Gill said. “We are anxious to continue our mission in aiding a great non-profit organization and putting on a high-energy show.”

Citizens are encouraged to bring real Christmas trees to the free disposal site located north of the Public Works building at 1002 Vine St. This area is right next to the bathrooms at Speier ball fields. Place the trees on the east side of the bathrooms.

Signs will be posted to direct citizens. &nbsp;

Please remove all plastic, ornaments and lights before leaving the tree. The disposal site will be open through Monday, Jan. 9, 2023. &nbsp;

Midwest Energy will provide personnel and a wood chipper to chip the trees to make mulch. The mulch will be placed at the Parks Department on the U.S. Highway 183 Bypass and is available for pickup free of charge.

ELLIS COUNTY RESIDENTS: Midwest Energy is asking its natural gas customers in Ellis County to conserve natural gas now through 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25. This comes at the request of an interstate pipeline company that supplies natural gas to the area.

Customers are asked to lower thermostats 1-2 degrees and turn off gas fireplaces unless absolutely necessary.

Winter Storm Elliott's record gas flows have put pressure on natural gas supplies nationwide. On Saturday, temperatures will increase slightly, but the wind is forecast to drop off, requiring more electricity to be generated from natural gas.

Fort Larned announces holiday closure schedule

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents of the special care their outdoor pet needs during the cold weather.&nbsp;

State law requires that all pets who spend time outside have access to adequate shelter and fresh water.

"The best place for our pets is in our home but we know that is not always possible," said Sheriff Scott Braun.&nbsp;

"We encourage all pet owners to take appropriate steps to protect those animals that may be left outside for long periods of time. Our office is prepared to investigate reports of animal neglect throughout this cold spell.&nbsp;

A few tips to meet the cold weather requirements include maintaining adequate shelter - like a doghouse with dry bedding such as straw, or a structure such as a garage or barn, and food and fresh water.

SHERIFF: Law requires protection of outdoor pets during cold weather

Due to equipment issues beyond staff control, until
 further notice all paper/cardboard recycling goods collected by the 
refuse collectors along the collection routes may need to be disposed of
 at the Ellis County Transfer Station rather than the standard recycling
 disposal site. 

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and 
encourage customers to temporarily hold on to paper or cardboard 
recycling material if they don’t wish to have it disposed of in this 
manner; however all recycling materials put out for disposal will be 
collected as normal.

An updated public service notice will be distributed once normal operations resume.

City
 of Hays customers who have any questions regarding this notice should 
contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 
628-7350.

Eagle Media Center will be closed for Christmas holiday

The 13th annual Community Christmas Dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Christmas Day at the VFW in&nbsp;Hays, 22nd and Vine.&nbsp; 

The meal will consist of roast beef, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, and a dinner roll. Christmas dinner is donated and cooked by the men of the VFW, who generously give their time Christmas Day, and prior, to prepare. The meal is free of charge, but donations are accepted. Donations that are received will be given to organizations that serve and assist area residents in an effort to "give back" all that has been given.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Community Christmas Dinner began with the vision to bring the community together for a Christmas meal, and to return to the true reason for the season — the remembrance and celebration of&nbsp;the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas can quickly become overshadowed by the busyness that tends to arise with the holiday season, and focus loss regarding the true meaning.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Community Christmas Dinner offers a time to refocus on the birth of Christ, provides the opportunity for community members to serve and be served, and simply enjoy each other's company.&nbsp; Though Jesus is acknowledged, all are&nbsp;welcome regardless of personal beliefs. &nbsp;Service also extends&nbsp;beyond the walls of the VFW through the delivery of meals to those who are homebound.&nbsp; The Community Christmas Dinner stands upon the scripture that “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8), and the dinner has continued to be an example of this love, thanks to Christ’s leading and the volunteers who graciously give their time. For those wishing to&nbsp;volunteer, volunteer opportunities will be available on Christmas Day prior to the meal, during the meal, and&nbsp;after, in decorating, serving and cleaning the VFW Hall. Volunteer opportunities can&nbsp;include directing traffic, filling to-go boxes for delivery, greeting community members, filling and providing drinks, assisting with carrying plates, clearing tables, delivering meals, washing dishes, cleaning&nbsp;after&nbsp;the event, and other miscellaneous tasks that arise.&nbsp; Desserts&nbsp;for the meal are also provided by community members, and these remain needed at this time.
