On Tuesday, a committee explored the possibility of developing a new performance stage in downtown Hays.

Imagine Ellis County is a strategic group focused on fostering regional community growth, with plans to achieve this through a stage at Hays Municipal Park.

Emily Knowles, designer and event coordinator, said the performance stage is a key element of more extensive plans for a community-centered entertainment district.

"Imagine a vibrant hub where culture, art and entertainment converge, creating a dynamic space that caters to every interest and passion," she said.

The group proposed a permanent stage to host musical performances, outdoor movie screenings, presentations, ceremonies, weddings and other community events.

The proposed stage dimensions include a height of five feet off the ground, a span of 75 feet between the pillars, 52 feet from the back wall to the front edge of the arc, 29 feet from the ground to the inner point peak and a back wall measuring 13.4 feet high.

Knowles is also a member of the Wild West Festival and Oktoberfest committees. The group referenced these annual events while discussing the stage's design and future events.

One concern raised was the stage's orientation and its exposure to direct sunlight, which could affect both performers and the audience. The proposed stage at Municipal Park would face southwest.

An alternative suggestion was reorienting the stage to face east, which was proposed in the beginning designs years ago and did not pan out.

"The problem with putting its back towards Main Street is it cuts everything off, and you're projecting into the corner, so you have no room for growth," Knowles said.

The group discussed relocating the nearby tennis courts to repurpose the space for food trucks during festivals. They also discussed the possibility of incorporating the tennis courts into an indoor arena on the east side of Larks Park.

Group members discussed seeking grants to fund the project, conducting feasibility studies and securing support from the city of Hays. There are no estimated costs yet.

The next meeting is set for at 1 p.m. Dec. 11 at Brief Space,&nbsp;219 W 10th St.

Committee members discuss downtown stage project in Hays

The 2024 Colby Community College Hall of Fame class has been announced and includes softball All-American Lynnette Bohannon, basketball star Curtis Gates, supporters Kenton and Sheila Krehbiel, and former administrator and coach Dr. Gary Schultz.

A reception will be held in their honor beginning at about 5:45 p.m. at the conclusion of the men's basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Colby Event Center. A brief ceremony is also scheduled at halftime of the men's game.

The CCC Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 2012. In June each year, a committee selects individuals or couples who have contributed substantially to the college through personal time, effort and interest, or have contributed significantly to the lives of others after being part of Colby Community College. Previous inductees are listed at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colbycc.edu/alumni/hall-of-fame/index.html">www.colbycc.edu/hof</a>.

Born and raised in Pueblo, Colo., the late Lynnette “Bo” Bohannon graduated from Pueblo County High School in 1998 after lettering four years in softball. She continued to shine in her time as a Trojan from 1998 to 2000, when she set several season and career school records, many of which still stand today. She capped her sophomore campaign in 2000 by being named to the&nbsp;Jayhawk Conference, Region VI, and All-America teams.

Bohannon is Colby’s single-season record-holder for hits (99), RBIs (80), and total bases (206). Her eight triples in a season and 13 over a career still rank first. For several years, her batting average (.455), hits (155), RBIs (105), and runs (100) were the highest marks posted over two seasons.

Upon receiving her associate degree from CCC, she continued her academic and athletic journey in New York at the University at Albany, SUNY. She played softball for the Great Danes for two years while majoring in Spanish and minoring in French.

Bohannon’s adventurous spirit led her to a unique career path after her time in Albany. She obtained her commercial driver’s license (CDL) and worked as an over-the-road truck driver for several years. Her love for travel took her across the country, allowing her to explore new places. During this time, she lived in various cities in Virginia, including Hampton, Norfolk, and Newport News.

After several years on the road, she returned home to Pueblo to be closer to her family. During this time, she pursued a new passion: sign language interpretation. She enrolled at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs and, in 2015, earned her degree and began working as an interpreter. This role allowed her to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

While Lynnette was deeply involved in her career as an interpreter, she remained connected to her family's excavating business and worked part-time alongside her father, Wick.

In 2020, Lynnette's journey took another meaningful turn as she became a Reiki master. Drawn to holistic healing and the opportunity to help others on a deeper level, she began practicing Reiki at the Pueblo Holistic Wellness Center.

Tragically, Lynnette's vibrant life was cut short when she lost a yearlong battle with cancer on June 5, 2023, at the age of 43. Despite her immense challenges, Lynnette continued approaching life with the same courage, kindness, and sense of humor that had defined her. She will be remembered for her ability to uplift others, unwavering work ethic, and&nbsp;infectious laughter.

&nbsp;Remembered as one of the greatest to don a Trojans basketball uniform, Curtis Gates captivated fans with his high-flying dunks and scoring ability. Gates, who tragically lost his life in 2001, left an indelible mark on the court that still resonates today.

Known to his friends as “Pearly” Gates for his flashy moves, Gates averaged 39 points a game his senior year at Wells High School in Chicago before joining the Trojans in 1983 under Coach Jack Renkens.

During his freshman campaign, the 6-foot 2 inch, 196-pound Gates put his name atop the Colby record book. In addition to pouring in 808 points that year, he established single-season marks for points in a game with 45 against McCook, most field goals (310), free throws made (188), free throws attempted (275), and dunks (73).

As a sophomore, Gates reset the standard with 81 dunks and broke his single-game record with 46 points against Highland College. He positioned himself to also hold the second spot for points in a season with 721. As a team, the Trojans thrived, finishing with a 28-5 record while averaging 82 points per game.

Gates remains Colby’s career-scoring leader with 1,529 points, 465 more than the next player on the list.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The prowess of a player at a small northwest Kansas school drew the attention of recruiters across the country. Coach Renkens told the Salina Journal in a Feb. 3, 1985 interview that "more than 50" major college coaches inquired about Gates. After earning his associate degree at Colby, Gates accepted a full-ride scholarship to the University of Central Florida.

Following college, Gates returned to Chicago to care for his family and work at Federal Express. In 1994, he was in the spotlight again when he starred in the critically acclaimed documentary Hoop Dreams, which followed the aspirations of his younger brother, William Gates, and fellow Chicagoan Arthur Agee as they chased their dreams of playing professional basketball.

Curtis’s life was cut short when he was shot to death on September 10, 2001, at the age of 36. Despite his untimely passing, his legacy continues.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice, their three children—Sparkiesha, Curtis Jr., and Jamese—and six grandchildren.

Throughout their lives, the Krehbiels were driven by a desire to serve, lead, and help those around them. Kenton and Sheila (Nonamaker) Krehbiel both attended Brown-Mackie School of Business in Salina, where they began a lifelong partnership, first as students, then as professionals, and later as pillars of their community.

After getting married, Kenton and Sheila were employed at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City. In 1973, they moved to Colby to operate Murphy’s Cafe. Their first interaction with Colby Community College came in 1974 when they purchased an advertisement in the college yearbook, an event that brought the cheerleaders to the cafe for a memorable photograph.Recipients of the 2004 Colby Community College Honorary Associate Degree in recognition of their service to Northwest Kansas, Kenton and Sheila have impacted the college in multiple ways over five decades. To encourage students’ musical growth, they established the Krehbiel Family Instrumental Band Scholarship in 2014. The couple were foster parents for the men's and women’s basketball teams, forming deep and lasting relationships with student-athletes. Kenton held a position on the Endowment Foundation board before being elected to the CCC Board of Trustees in 1989, where he served until his passing on Nov. 4, 2020. During his tenure, he was essential in hiring three college presidents and expanding the institution’s facilities and services.

Sheila worked for the Prairie Drummer newspaper for three years and later dedicated 35 years to Sunflower Bank, becoming a familiar and trusted face in the Colby business world. Kenton found his niche in public service, working at the Colby Super Market before beginning a long career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1978. In 1997, he was appointed postmaster of Goodland. He assumed the Colby postmaster role in 2004 and held it through his retirement in 2012.

The Krehbiels’ community contributions extended well beyond their professional careers. They were active members of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Celebration Community Church. For 14 years, they were leaders for the Tumbleweed 4-H Club, fostering a spirit of leadership and service among the youth. Kenton joined the Kiwanis Club in 1974 and held numerous local and state positions. His dedication to the organization was evident in his leadership of various committees, including the Thomas County Junior Miss pageant and the Kiwanis pancake feed, where he became known for making pancakes from scratch using a recipe from Sheila’s mother. His vision and passion were instrumental in growing the Pete Henry Foundation to its current level of success.

Sheila, too, made her mark through involvement with the Genesis-Thomas County Food Pantry, where she has been a board member for 24 years. She has volunteered in the office at Heartland Christian School for three years. In 1990, she helped organize the Prairie Rose Harmony ladies' barbershop chorus, and she remains the only charter member still active, serving as treasurer for over three decades.

Kenton and Sheila raised two daughters, CCC alumnae Sharon and Brenda, who, along with their families, have carried forward their parents' values of service and community. Sharon, with her husband Mike Hansen, resides in Kansas City, Mo., while Brenda and her husband, Adam Inman, live in Manhattan. Kenton and Sheila took great pride in their five grandchildren: Jacob and Caleb Hansen, and Avery, Brady, and Colby Inman.

The Krehbiels embraced the opportunity to travel, not just for leisure but to expand their worldview and enrich their family’s experiences. They attended 14 international Kiwanis conventions, opting to drive across the U.S. rather than fly. As a result, they visited 48 states, explored 38 state capitals, and ventured into Mexico and across Canada.

The family legacy continues to grow. In memory of Kenton, the Kiwanis Club of Thomas County/Colby launched a campaign in 2023 to fundraise for the Kenton Krehbiel Inclusive Playground at Villa High Park in Colby. The plan is to renovate the park equipment to make it accessible for all children.

Upon his arrival in 1972, Gary Schultz began a 24-year tenure at CCC that touched many people as a track and cross-country coach and administrator.

Before his roles at Colby, his resume included teaching and coaching, and he led Bucklin and Phillipsburg high schools to their first-ever cross-country state championships. His Colby teams had several firsts, including the first track win at the Air Force Academy. He also introduced and coached CCC’s first women’s track program in 1974. Forty-eight school records were broken during his tenure, mainly with athletes he recruited from Western Kansas.

In addition to his coaching achievements, Schultz’s work as the financial aid director and dean of students helped elevate CCC until his retirement in 1996. Under his leadership, the college achieved record enrollment, and he oversaw multiple successful accreditation reaffirmations. He presented at several state and national conferences and was a consultant for the North Central Association when he visited several community colleges to assist with the accreditation process.

While president of the Rocky Mountain Financial Aid Administrators, Schultz was a key figure in creating a week-long summer training program for financial aid staff across the U.S. He also was president of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and was employed by the U.S. Department of Education to train financial aid professionals.

Schultz was active in Colby's community. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club and Phi Delta Kappa, which presented him with the Outstanding Educator Award. He also took on leadership roles in the Colby Ambassadors and Colby United Methodist Church.

He and his wife, Ronita, have three children: Brad, a sales and management professional; Mark, a Christian music artist and 2021 CCC Hall of Fame inductee; and Susan, a landscape architect. They are proud grandparents to 11 grandchildren.&nbsp;

After leaving Northwest Kansas, the Schultzes moved to Liberty, Mo., where Gary was vice president of Target Marketing and a graduate school instructor for Baker University.&nbsp;&nbsp;Following his work with Target, they moved back to Kansas, where they reside in Overland Park.

In retirement, he still rides his bicycle approximately 40 miles a week. He has completed the Bike Across Kansas ten times, the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) five times, and the Bike Tour of Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also spends considerable time on the golf course, plus serving as an election supervisor in every election.

Schultz earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University and a Doctor of Education from Kansas State University. With multiple degrees and various positions throughout his career, the title that still brings him the most pride is "Coach."

"When someone calls me 'Coach,' I usually thank them," he said. "It’s a great title."

His Colby teams had several firsts, including the first track win at the Air Force Academy. He also introduced and coached CCC’s first women’s track program in 1974. Forty-eight school records were broken during his tenure, mainly with athletes he recruited from Western Kansas.In addition to his coaching achievements, Schultz’s work as the financial aid director and dean of students helped elevate CCC until his retirement in 1996. Under his leadership, the college achieved record enrollment, and he oversaw multiple successful accreditation reaffirmations. He presented at several state and national conferences and was a consultant for the North Central Association when he visited several community colleges to assist with the accreditation process.While president of the Rocky Mountain Financial Aid Administrators, Schultz was a key figure in creating a week-long summer training program for financial aid staff across the U.S. He also was president of the Executive Committee of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and was employed by the U.S. Department of Education to train financial aid professionals.Schultz was active in Colby's community. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club and Phi Delta Kappa, which presented him with the Outstanding Educator Award. He also took on leadership roles in the Colby Ambassadors and Colby United Methodist Church.He and his wife, Ronita, have three children: Brad, a sales and management professional; Mark, a Christian music artist and 2021 CCC Hall of Fame inductee; and Susan, a landscape architect. They are proud grandparents to 11 grandchildren.&nbsp;After leaving Northwest Kansas, the Schultzes moved to Liberty, Mo., where Gary was vice president of Target Marketing and a graduate school instructor for Baker University.&nbsp;&nbsp;Following his work with Target, they moved back to Kansas, where they reside in Overland Park.In retirement, he still rides his bicycle approximately 40 miles a week. He has completed the Bike Across Kansas ten times, the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) five times, and the Bike Tour of Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also spends considerable time on the golf course, plus serving as an election supervisor in every election.Schultz earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University and a Doctor of Education from Kansas State University. Rush Co. Christmas Choir to perform Dec. 1

As a kiddo, I couldn’t wait for Thanksgiving. I loved making Pilgrim hats and handprint turkeys at school. As a youngster and adult, I treasured celebrating at Grandma Lottie’s where she served family roasted turkey on a platter surrounded by dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, hot rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy, along with the promise we needed to leave room for fresh-made pumpkin pies and homemade whipped cream for dessert.

Not only was the meal delicious, she decorated the dining and living rooms to whimsically celebrate the season. Autumn flowers surrounded pilgrim and turkey figurines in every available space. Little ones couldn’t resist moving those characters from place to place while providing clever kid dialogue. My mother accepted her Mom’s challenge and found a huge terra cotta turkey accompanied by porcelain pilgrims and turkey salt and pepper shakers to grace her Thanksgiving table post Grandma Lottie.

Gramma and Mom must’ve passed on the festive gene as well as some décor, though it took a while to manifest. After decades of no Thanksgiving doo-dads, we now hang an autumn wreath on the door, set out a snipped-tin turkey in a bower of silk leaves, and display clever little bird pilgrims and smaller turkeys with dangling shoelace legs. This generation of grandkids continue the tradition of transferring them from one open spot to another in dining and living rooms. Lately, those turkeys have prompted some soul or perhaps dietary searching.

Here's the dilemma. While turkey is clearly traditional Thanksgiving food and one that Grandma and Mom always served, my hubs and I prefer ham at holiday meals. What does this mean in terms of décor? Do I jettison gobblers in search of handcrafted oinkers to replace expected turkey figurines in holiday displays?

Our community boasts a craft business that offers the public opportunities to dip a brush and paint plaster molds, including porkers. I can see accenting them to suit autumn. Like those cool horses decorated with different designs that you find in specialty catalogues, I could paint sunflowers all over one of those little hams and then embellish another with fall leaves and one with Pilgrim hats and blunderbusses. If I got really creative, I could cover one of those forms with dozens of strutting turkeys celebrating the fact they aren’t on the menu. Only moderately interested in gramma’s holiday foo foo rah, the grands might get into painting piggies to replace those goofy fan-tailed strutters and start a whole new family custom.

While we might replace a traditional turkey meal with ham, it’s hard to ignore a life-time of celebrating my favorite holiday (no costumes, no gifts, great food, and good fellowship) without the standard turkey showing up in some form. Based on research, natives and pilgrims at those early feasts ate more fish, sea food, venison, and other wild game than they did turkey. But, family tradition is important. It creates structure for celebrating and customs to pass through generations.

That said, since we have a ham in the freezer awaiting Thanksgiving, our collection of turkeys can offer thanks they’ll continuing starring in our traditional décor.

Historic Safeway Building/Gella’s Expansion

Building Description: The one-story red brick building at 121 E Eleventh was built ca. 1937 as home to the Safeway Grocery Store. The building is the easternmost structure in a string of one-and two-story buildings with a consistent setback on the north side of E. Eleventh Street, one block off Main Street. The building will be occupied as an expansion of Gella’s Diner &amp; Lb. Brewing Co. in the one-story buildings at 111-119 East Eleventh Street. An alley runs along the north/rear façade and the storefront fronts Eleventh Street on the south with a public sidewalk along the south façade and brick street with parallel parking along E. Eleventh Street.

The storefront is currently boarded with the glass windows missing (wood is visible on the interior). An area above the storefront is also boarded corresponding to the large steel I-beam that spans the storefront opening, supported by one central column). An alternating band of concrete and glass black panels is located on the upper façade framed by buff brick. The recessed entry, extant at the east end, is framed by the brick wall on the west and an angled section of the boarded storefront on the east. A pair of single-light wood doors (one replaced with slab door) serve as the original entrance with a narrow sidelight on the west and a transom panel composed of two horizontal lights about each door. On the interior, no glass is present in the display windows but a short plastered bulkhead is extant. Temporary removal of the wood covering revealed damaged brick tile on the narrow bulkhead.

There are four openings on the rear façade – three windows and a single door. All are punched openings with hidden lintels and windows have header-course brick sills. The original windows were multi-light steel windows, two of which are in place. One window has formerly been removed and a ventilation fan installed in the window opening. From the interior, the rear door is a five-horizontal panel wood door, with a metal covering on the exterior that is visible on the rear façade.

The interior of the building is currently an open space with framed partition walls. The metal barrel trusses and interim wood framing is extant and exposed throughout the interior of the building. The perimeter walls have a plaster finish and remnants of wood baseboards are in place in isolated locations. At existing openings, plaster has a curved return. There is significant deterioration of plaster in some of the areas and peeling paint throughout. The front two-thirds of the space has a hardwood floor exposed. There are some areas of damaged or missing wood flooring but generally the floor appears to be in sound condition. The rear of the space has a concrete slab that is in fair to poor condition.

Project Description for KSHS Rural Preservation Grant: &nbsp;

Detailed floor plans and drawings available upon request for bidding purposes.

● Install new storefront system on the existing concrete curb with new black tile installed at the bulkhead. The configuration will be retained with a recessed entrance on the west end. The existing wood doors will be removed and a pair of two-light aluminum doors, with sidelight, will be installed to meet accessibility requirements. The storefront system will be aluminum with a factory silver aluminum finish with 2-1/2” mullions and clear, low e glass. Display windows will be full height in the original opening; the existing glass block band will be retained above the storefront. Aluminum sheet metal to match the storefront will be used as sheathing at center column and horizontal I-beam/lintel above storefront opening. The lintel band will be used for business signage.

● The new floor plan will have limited walls with bathrooms along the west wall and a kitchen at the rear, maintaining a large open dining room at the storefront. An alley runs along the north/rear façade and the storefront fronts Eleventh Street on the south with a public sidewalk along the south façade and brick street with parallel parking along E. Eleventh Street.The storefront is currently boarded with the glass windows missing (wood is visible on the interior). An area above the storefront is also boarded corresponding to the large steel I-beam that spans the storefront opening, supported by one central column). An alternating band of concrete and glass black panels is located on the upper façade framed by buff brick. The recessed entry, extant at the east end, is framed by the brick wall on the west and an angled section of the boarded storefront on the east. A pair of single-light wood doors (one replaced with slab door) serve as the original entrance with a narrow sidelight on the west and a transom panel composed of two horizontal lights about each door. On the interior, no glass is present in the display windows but a short plastered bulkhead is extant. Temporary removal of the wood covering revealed damaged brick tile on the narrow bulkhead.There are four openings on the rear façade – three windows and a single door. Hays native takes leadership role at&nbsp; Patterson Family Foundation

The Patterson Family Foundation is looking to fill gaps in philanthropic support for rural communities such as Hays.

The nonprofit based in Kansas City is a family-led organization dedicated to empowering rural communities to thrive through grants and collaborative efforts.

Maria Flynn, president and CEO of the Patterson Family Foundation, said the foundation works with local groups to meet community needs.

"We work with 501(c)(3) organizations that are established and doing the work by helping them to do more," she said.

The foundation provides grants by considering economic development, health care, education and community development.

The foundation has previously collaborated with Hays, recently awarding a $750,000 grant to support the construction of Fort Hays Tech North Central's new building.

The Patterson Family Foundation provides a range of grants, including program, operational, equipment and capital grants.

"Community foundations are an important area for us to help build capacity and matching grants for things that communities are interested in," Flynn said.

Flynn is from Hays and became president and CEO in September.

Flynn said the foundation will implement changes starting next year regarding the specific guidance it seeks in grant applications.

The Patterson Family Foundation partners with 119 counties in Kansas and western Missouri, focusing on those with populations less than 50,000.

"We take a 50-year outlook of how our regions are evolving," Flynn said. "What financial, network, and time investments can we make to help the trajectory of our communities become great places to live?"

Flynn said 7% of all philanthropic funding reaches rural areas, which drops to about 5% when excluding universities.

The Patterson Foundation allocated $3 million in 2023 to support career and technical education in rural communities and $6.1 million to fund child care centers.

$5.4 million was distributed to rural hospitals and telehealth across 45 counties in Kansas and Missouri.

The nonprofit has supported rural communities since 2007, founded by Neal and Jeanne Patterson. After their passing, their children continue their legacy as the foundation's board of directors.

"I would love to connect more with people," Flynn said. "We really want to spotlight great things happening around these communities."

Patterson Family Foundation bridges gaps in rural philanthropy

Fort Hays State University and two technical colleges join ranks to address rural workforce shortages and population decline

TOPEKA — Three higher education institutions in central and western Kansas joined forces to address the region’s workforce shortages and education gaps.

Fort Hays State University, Northwest Kansas Technical College and North Central Kansas Technical College created a new affiliation as a way to propel students into the region’s workforce and empower their communities to persist through hard times.

The affiliation is different from a merger or a takeover, said Tisa Mason, president of Fort Hays State, on the Kansas Reflector podcast. The two tech colleges are now under the Fort Hays brand, complete with new logos and fresh merchandise, while remaining independently accredited institutions. They were renamed Fort Hays Tech Northwest and Fort Hays Tech North Central.

The joint venture is in its early stages, but school leaders are optimistic the education-to-profession pipeline they’re creating will have lasting impacts in their communities.

The three schools have a better chance at earning federal funding as a group to reinvest in students and their communities, Mason said.

As higher education has become more unaffordable for students, part of the affiliation initiative is focused on reducing barriers to education. That’s happening through creating new programs and bolstering existing ones to meet students where they are at.

Mason said they want to make registering for classes “as easy as Amazon.com.”

Nursing and the trades have been primary points of interest for students, especially as construction needs and health care worker shortages become more acute, said Jennifer Brown, the dean of instruction at the north-central tech college.

Students can start at either of the technical colleges and work their way toward earning a bachelor’s degree online at the university. The goal is a seamless transition, Brown said.

“They can stay in place, wherever that might be within north-central Kansas or western Kansas, and still earn that bachelor’s degree,” she said.

Brown is on some of the 14 implementation teams focused on making the new programs work. To her, a successful initiative will result in more students furthering credits toward degrees or added credentials and training, she said.

“I think sometimes it’s really hard to envision the future because we don’t even know yet,” Brown said. “One of the greatest things that I think is coming from this, from my perspective, is the relationship building that we have amongst all three institutions.”

Peter Laipson, who oversees the affiliation initiative as its director, said he hopes in the coming years students are able to move through their education and find lucrative work in western and north-central Kansas on the other side.

“I think, ultimately, that would be good for them. That would be good for the communities. That would mean that there’s a kind of robust business atmosphere,” Laipson said. “I think that would be the ultimate sign of success.

Expanded parenting education opportunities offered at HaysMed Birth Center

The holiday season is around the corner, and this means that the kitchen will likely become a busy place as we prepare meals to gather around. As you prepare tasty dishes to share, be conscious of the possibility of sharing illness too. I found these tips from K-State food scientist, Karen Blakeslee, especially helpful for preventing cross-contamination:

“We use the kitchen sink for food preparation and more,” Blakeslee said. “The possibility exists for foodborne illness-causing bacteria to hang out in the sink too. These bacteria could cross-contaminate your food and make you sick.”

Blakeslee added that a recent USDA study tested surfaces where participants prepared a breakfast meal with raw sausage, shell eggs, and a fruit salad made with cut-up cantaloupe. Test results showed that 34% of the sinks were contaminated after preparing the meal.

Even more scary, 26% of the samples of cut-up cantaloupe from the fruit salad were contaminated after breakfast prep.

“The bacteria in the sink or on your hands can cross-contaminate from the sink to other items, including those you normally eat raw. This means you’ll be eating that bacteria too,” Blakeslee said.

After using your sink to wash or prepare food, clean and sanitize the sink:

1) Use warm, soapy water to wash the sink. Wipe it clean with paper towels.

2) Use a sanitizer and let air dry. Sanitizers can be homemade (1 tablespoon of liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water) or use a commercial sanitizer or sanitizing wipe.

When the sink is used to clean and sanitize, it’s easy to forget that the sink itself can become contaminated. So, be mindful of your food prep habits to keep you and the entire family healthy this holiday season.

&nbsp;Breaks Eatery and Bar has unveiled a new seasonal menu that transports diners from the heart of Kansas to the coastal waters of New England and Florida. The restaurant launched its new seasonal menu last Friday and Saturday, featuring fresh wild-caught seafood flown in from the East Coast.

Guests can enjoy grilled or poached lobster, pan-seared Red Snapper and New England Clam Chowder. According to Executive Chefs Shaun Wood and Andrew Victoria, these dishes provide a unique opportunity to experience coastal flavors in Hays.“We’re excited to offer our guests such high-quality, fresh seafood that they typically wouldn’t be able to find this far from the coast,” said Chef Wood. “It’s a treat for the senses, and we’ve loved being able to bring something new to our community.”In addition to the seafood, the menu also includes a section of hearty non-seafood entrees such as Filet Mignon, brined and grilled double Pork Chops, Chicken Picatta, and Wagyu Chicken Fried Steak.
