Historic Fort Hays Days announces schedule of events

The Society of Friends of Historic Fort Hays will offer a free-to-the-public, two-day encampment event to commemorate and celebrate local Fort Hays period history. “Historic Fort Hays Days: Where History Lives!” will be a celebration of culture and history on June 11-12, 2022 at the Historic Fort Hays Site at 1472 US Hwy 183 Alternate.

Planned activities for the two-day event and 19th Century festivities include period encampments of Cheyenne and Arapaho Nations, infantry soldiers, Buffalo Soldiers, scouts, historical figure portrayals, vintage dress-up photos, historical speakers under the Chautauqua-style tent, music, dancing, vintage baseball game, old time preaching on Sunday morning, and much more.

SATURDAY, JUNE 11

9:00 a.m.: Take in the encampment on the grounds: Cheyenne and Arapaho village, Buffalo Soldiers, scout camp with Buffalo Bill, sutler’s store, blacksmith demonstrations, fort tours, bread and butter demonstration, wagon rides, vintage photos, gun displays and more.

9:30 a.m.: Leo E. Oliva speaking – “Railroaded: The Industry That Shaped Kansas” (under the tent)

10:30 a.m.: Sherrie Smith speaking – “From Leeches to Lasers - A Look Back at How We Got From There to Here” (under the tent)

11:30 a.m.: Cheyenne and Arapaho Introduction and oratory (under the tent)

Lunch: Local Food Truck

1:00 p.m.: Leo E. Oliva speaking – “Railroaded: The Industry That Shaped Kansas” (under the tent)

2:00 p.m.: Sherrie Smith speaking – “From Leeches to Lasers - A Look Back at How We Got From There to Here” (under the tent)

3:00 p.m.: Cheyenne and Arapaho introduction and oratory (under the tent)

Take this opportunity to enjoy the period encampment on the grounds and grab a bite at the food truck.

6:00-8:00 p.m.: Blackwolf band and dance caller will lead dances from 6-8, but you are free to just listen to the delightful period music!

SUNDAY, JUNE 12

10:00 a.m.: Old time church service and hymn singing with Cheyenne and Arapaho Nations sharing their native songs and traditions.

Lunch: Local Food Truck

1:00 p.m.: “Post Nine” and “Hays City 9” vintage base ball game, 1869 rules!
